WWYD- Work related

I left my employer last month. In a nutshell they want me back and would increase salary.

I left for several reasons (too flexible-meaning i would normally work 7a-3p or 330p but sometimes I would work at midnight (for meetings with night shift) or meetings at 5p because i needed to meet with a evening group).  It is never consistent like I know these meetings are held during the first 2 weeks of each month. I may have them all during the same week and that leads to an insane workload and day, commute increased from 10 minutes prior to baby to 45 mins to 1 hour due change in location). I was fortunate to stay home with my LO for close to a year by consulting part time. They would allow me to take off a day during the week but its soo hard to do so because I may have a pre-scheduled meeting or something.

I am looking for new opportunities but nothing yet. wondering what i should do. Truthfully i dont want to be a director anymore thats the primary reason why i left. I invested a lot in my education and its silly i feel this way but its just hard to find a lesser role. I do know as little one gets older i will appreciate flexibility. Despite working in healthcare industry i don't work weekends
Ladies what should i do? i know you can't make the decision for me just looking for points of view

  • Am I reading this correctly? Or was that a typo? Your job was too flexible??? I don't understand...
I feel like more details are needed to really understand the situation. How long was your commute? How much time did you get with your LO each day? How much would they increase your pay and are you fine without your income?

  • If it were me, I would go back to work because I'd need a way to support myself and LO financially without leaning on anyone or anything else as a crutch. I am also confused about your job being too flexible, please elaborate.

  • sorry ladies I corrected: my core hours were 7a-330p

too flexible- meaning i I could take off a day during the week if I had meetings prior to 7a or 3p

commute time is 45mins to 1 hour. Hubby would do AM drop off

This doesn't sound bad at all. Even with a one hour commute, you would still get home at a decent hour and have time to spend with LO.

In theory it should work that way but i often don't get to leave at 330p despite starting work at 6am or 7a.  Man, being a grown up sucks.

  • It sounds like all the reasons you left would still be there. Unless you need the money it sounds like you should look for something more in line with what you want. I understand that they are offering an increase in pay but it would have to be a HUGE increase for me to work somewhere with a commute, hours, and responsibility that I didn't like.

I know this feeling all too well. :( My normal shift is 7:30-4:30 and lately I've been coming in earlier and leaving later. I cherish my weekends with DS and use any free time to make up for time lost on the week days, but I still don't think that I could go without a job.

  • I'm thinking it's not flexibility, it's consistency. But, if they're willing to give you and extra day off to make up for early/late days it doesn't sound bad. That's a crappy commute, though.

But, if you were unhappy, for whatever reason, and you can afford to stay home until you find something you prefer...I say go for it. No point in being miserable.

I do agree with this. No job is worth being miserable everyday if you have other ways to support yourself.
