Non-clicky poll: Maternity leave

For those who work and are not planning on being a SAHM:

How much maternity leave will you be entitled to?

How much is paid vs. un-paid?

Is your SO entitled to any official leave (non-vacation or sick days)?

Re: Non-clicky poll: Maternity leave

  • My goal is to take 8-12 weeks. 12 would be awesome, but I'm not counting on it. None of it will be paid. I will use vacation time (hoping to have 2 weeks saved by then) and we have saved money to make up the rest. No STD offered by my employer. My husband may take a few vacation days - it'll depend on the time of year.

I'll be able to take up to 12 weeks (FMLA). Paid/unpaid would depend on how much leave I have saved up. First 30 days I would use my accrued time off, I would get 60% of my pay for 2 weeks under short term disability, and anything beyond those 6 weeks would be unpaid (unless I had more vacation available).

DH gets 10 days of paid leave (if approved by his command).

  • Technically because of FMLA, you are entitled to at least 12 weeks non-paid. However, my workplace only pays for 5, and if I want to get paid after that I have to use vacation/earned sick days. Most likely I'll only be taking 6 weeks :/
The hubs owns his own buisness, so technically no time off for him. He can make his own schedule, though, which will most likely prove helpful.

  • Since open enrollment just came and went, I looked into this a bit. My job doesn't offer short term disability so I *think* (though need to double check) that I just max out my sick time and take the rest (up to 12 weeks) unpaid. Depending on timing though, I might not come back, since we'd likely move 4-6 months after hypothetical child is born.

DH gets 10 consecutive paid days anytime in the first year, at the discretion of his boss.

  • I am entitled to 50 weeks at about 75% salary and up to an additional 17 weeks at no salary.  DH can take 5 weeks at about 75% salary and is also entitled to share up to half of my 50 weeks if we so choose.

  • We get one year paid parental leave (can be all maternity or combined maternity/paternity) - I don't know the exact numbers but around 5 months of that is 2/3 of regular pay from federal leave with top up by the employer to around 90%, the remaining 7 months is the federal 2/3 of pay.  (Canadian, in BC to be exact).

6-8 weeks STD, depending on vaginal vs. C-section

How much is paid vs. un-paid?

All is paid at 67% of my salary.  I plan to take 12 weeks, of which some will be paid with PTO.  I imagine I'll have to take a week or two unpaid.

Is your SO entitled to any official leave (non-vacation or sick days)?

Yes, he's entitled to12 weeks 100% paid paternity leave.  Insane.  He's going to probably take 2-4.  He works from home so he'll be around.

  • How much maternity leave will you be entitled to?  I'm entitled to the 12 weeks guaranteed by FMLA.

How much is paid vs. un-paid?  I'm lucky to be in job where I have a ton of vacation and sick leave so all 12 weeks will be paid.  I've saved up the max roll over of 60 sick days and 45 vacation days.  I'm allowed to use sick leave for however long my doctor's office says I need (generally 6 weeks/30 days, but some dr's will write a note for an additional 2 weeks for bonding).  Anything over the dr's recommendation must be taken as vacation or leave without pay.  So, I'll have 6-8 weeks of sick and 4-6 weeks of vacation.

Is your SO entitled to any official leave (non-vacation or sick days)?  No.

    It really sucks. :(
  • How much maternity leave will you be entitled to?

My company has paid maternity leave (not STD).  You get either 4, 6, or 12 weeks paid at 50% of your pay depending on how long you've been with the company.  You then use your sick bank (unused sick days can be banked up to a certain number of days), sick days, personal days, and accrued vacation days to supplement the rest of you pay.  I've been with the company long enough to qualify for 12 weeks.

How much is paid vs. un-paid?

The company pays you at 50% of your pay and then the rest is supplemented with sick bank and PTO.  I have enough sick bank that I will have 12 weeks at full pay and still have PTO left.

Is your SO entitled to any official leave (non-vacation or sick days)?

No and he doesn't qualify for FMLA.  He gets 2 weeks vacation and will probably use some of that time.

This is all annoyingly unclear for me right now.  I tried asking HR about it when I first started and I basically got a bunch of words followed by "You come talk to me when you're pregnant."  Then, I asked my good friend who works here since she's had two kids while being here and she also threw some large words at me and said "Talk to HR when the times comes."

I'm hoping that HR visit is enlightening.  I know I qualify for FMLA.  I know I have short-term disability that covers me for a short time.  I know I have lots of paid time off saved up.  Somewhere in there is what will happen.

Regardless, I plan to take at least six weeks off.  This will all have to be balanced with daycare.
HR here screws up every single maternity leave that I have seen.  It's ridiculous.

How is it a different story for every situation? I'm curious. If you offer one person something you have to offer all employees the same..
It depends on: -length of time with employer -status (FT or PT) -prior leaves taken For ex. if you have been employed under a year and ask me this hypothetical question on your 11-month anniversary of employment, i'd tell you you're not eligible for job-protected leave under FMLA (16 wks) but would offer you 8 weeks unprotected job leave under company policy. If you come back on your one year anniversary, now you are eligible for FMLA so i'd say you can take up to 16 weeks unpaid, job protected leave. If you're part time, you don't get short term disability - but if you have a switch to full time during your pregnancy, you may be eligible for short term disability by the time you deliver. It varies based on a lot of factors. Also, if you ask me when you first get pregnant i'll tell you 16 weeks of FMLA (if eligible) but if throughout the next nine months you take leave for other qualified reasons under FMLA then your 16 weeks will be reduced by the number of weeks you took for the other reason - so my answer on any given day could be different based on the circumstance. It's not a nasty thing, it's just variable.. ETA: And "hilarious" probably isn't the best choice of terms because I know it's frustrating, and I do explain all of this to my employees - I would hope your HR person does the same. I am happy to answer any questions if I think it applies to you

How much is paid vs. un-paid? At my hospital there is no sick time vs vacation vs maternity leave. It is grouped together as paid time off. I have 13-14 weeks saved up right now, so I will take 12 weeks paid at 100%.

  • That is the world's worst graphic.

How much maternity leave will you be entitled to? 12 weeks under FMLA. It's my hope that at some point I'll be able to transition to work from home full-time.  Currently, I work from home about two or three days a week.

How much is paid vs. un-paid? Between 6 to 8 weeks paid.

Is your SO entitled to any official leave (non-vacation or sick days)? Yes, he's entitled up to 12 weeks under FMLA, however, he'll probably take a week or so.

    image
Don't worry, I'm working on it.

  • I am entitled to 12 weeks of FMLA, but my company doesn't provide any paid maternity leave.  They do provide a company provided short term disability policy, but the elimination period is 30 days, so I'll only get 2 weeks or so of 66% pay from that. I plan on using all of my carefully horded vacation and sick time, which will still leave me short on pay.  DH does not get any paternity leave, but is entitled to 6 weeks of unpaid leave through FMLA.  He will be taking about a month off using his horded vacation time.
I work in HR for my company and I have handled a few different maternity leaves so far at my current company.

This is not a Connecticut board. You need to clarify in future responses so you don't confuse the shit out of people and provide inaccruate information.

BAM. I don't give a shit what they call it, it's the the Federal one that applies across the board in the US. Clarify your points.

I don't need to clarify shit, I was asked a question as it pertains to me, not the rest of the board. I provided accurate information for myself, too bad if you or any other poster took the information I provided about myself and ran with it. Don't be so, what's the word, butthurt, about the fact that you tried to get on someone's case and it blew up in your face.

How much maternity leave will you be entitled to? 12 weeks per FMLA.

How much is paid vs. un-paid? None is officially paid for maternity leave. However, I can apply for short-term disability which pays 70% of your salary for up to 26 weeks after a 1 week "elimination period". During that 1 week, I can use general leave to be paid 100% or take it unpaid. So all that combined I can be paid in some way the whole 12 weeks.

Is your SO entitled to any official leave (non-vacation or sick days)? DH works for the same company I do, so if he uses FMLA leave it would count against my 12 weeks. He can use his general leave however, as long as the leave is approved by his manager.

  • My job lets you just have the 12 weeks a year of fml to keep your position open..so if I didn't take any other fml for the year I can have the 12 weeks and if not the fml time I did take for other health reasons gets deducted from that .. We have to use our sick and vacation time for pay and get 6 weeks disability pay .everything else would be leave without pay.. I think this is pretty common ??? As for DH he gets 2 weeks paternity leave with his job which doesn't go against his vacation or sick time , his job is nicer then mine! Lol

  • So since we're taking a poll on maternity leave, what are everyone’s thoughts on how they're future maternity leave will be received?

I ask because in Sept 2012 I took a job at a company whose average age for the location is 40. There are about 150 people in the office (I'm at the HQ of a large company) and the last time someone got pregnant was two years ago. She quit shortly after returning from maternity leave, I later heard through the grapevine that she felt pressured to travel internationally a significant amount after returning to "make up" for being out for two months, so that's why she quit. Coincidently... I replaced her.

After hearing all of this (about 2 months into the job), I started updating my resume again :P I've hung in there for the full year so I don't look like a job hopping flake and am now interviewing again.

Does anyone else feel that taking maternity leave will cause resentment in your department/hurt your career?

  • I am going to take six weeks but if I was going back to full-time I would definitely take longer. Since I only work part-time I don't qualify for FMLA so none of my leave will be paid this time.  with my dd I took 12 weeks. 11 of those were fully paid and the last week was partially paid. I had to use all my vacation and sick time even what I accurred while I was out though.   It was awesome coming back to work with a baby in daycare and no sick or vacation time. My dh has two weeks of paternity leave. He took one week when she was born and then one day a week for the next five weeks.

How much maternity leave will you be entitled to?   16 unpaid weeks under FMLA, I will take all 16 weeks

How much is paid vs. un-paid?  I will exhaust any sick time first (about a week), then short term disability (60% of salary up to $500) for either 6 wks vg or 8wks csection.  The rest I will use any vacation time I've saved up or take unpaid.

Is your SO entitled to any official leave (non-vacation or sick days)? He is also entitled to 16 weeks unpaid FMLA, he will take all 16 weeks.  To be paid he will use all of his PTO (a bank of paid time off days to use) - about 4 weeks paid.

FMLA is 12 weeks, not 16.
Correction: Federal FMLA is 12 weeks, but in the State of CT it's 16 weeks - check your state laws.
Most states don't have anything in additional to FMLA. FMLA is Federal law. What you were citing was your state law which is not FMLA.

Bam: https://www.ctdol.state.ct.us/wgwkstnd/fmla.htm That's Connecticut Family Medical Leave Act

You're on a national board.  If you say FMLA is 16 weeks and don't clarify that it's a state program, you're essentially spreading false info by omission.

    ETA:  Bam.

Oh please, people need to do their own research - isn't that what you guys all promote - don't go by others? There's ten other people writing that FMLA = 12 weeks, so who's the dumbass reading ONLY my comment half way down and going, Yeah, that bitch must be correct - it's definitely 16.
