Baby Names

It's a BOY! Name opinions.

We found out on Monday that we're having a boy! We couldn't be happier.

Jackson Daniel

What do you think? :) He wanted to name his son Jack but I like the name Jackson better than just Jack since I have several family members with that same name. Yes, I realize Jackson is a very popular name nowadays - but he and I both grew up with very plain names.

Opinions? :) Thanks!

  • As long as you are okay with having one of the most popular names for you son I say go for it! It is a great name!
  • Yep, Jack Daniels. Dislike.

  • it makes me think the parent is only picking jackson because jack daniels is obviously to close so I would think the parent is trying to get away with it by saying oh its jackson not jack. its still to close to jack daniels. you really can't come up with something else? you really want to name your son after liquor? I just don't understand

I do get the Jack Daniels connection HOWEVER, since you are using Jackson and you rarely use your middle name it's not a huge deal to me. I think Jackson Daniel is fine.

This. They're both classic, very nice names and if people in HS want to call him Jack Daniels it'll be considered a cool NN anyway.

  • I see "Jack Daniels." Sorry :-/
  • Ditto the Jack Daniels comments. And Jackson is trendy and overused. I just don't care for the name at all.

And why on earth someone would want their high school child associated with the liquor to be "cool" is beyond me.

  • I appreciate the opinions.

We aren't changing our minds on the name - just wanted to see what some other mommies (and daddies if there are any posting currently) thought.

And yes, while Jackson is a popular name - like I said in my original post my SO and I have very popular names.

It's hard to be 'original' with a baby name and not come up with something entirely off the wall and ridiculous.

Also, I'd like to add that I mentioned nothing about alcohol or thinking my child would be deemed "cool" because of the name Jack Daniels. ;)

Yes, that is what I would want for my son... wow, this is blowing my mind... anyway, fact remains, there are WAY too many Jackson's out there. What about Jonathan? An infinitely better name with no alcoholic associations.

Nobody said anything about your son, so get the stick out your ass. OP I was making light of the situation since everybody on this board keeps associating the name with alcohol. In HS your friends are going to make up NN's, sorry if it came off as anything else. I'm glad your sticking with Jackson.

The comment about thinking it was "cool" wasn't directed at you.  And obviously you didn't mention alcohol; the reason it came up is that you asked what people thought of the name, and that's what the name makes them think of.  If you genuinely came here for opinions, then your takeaway should be that other people are going to be reminded of Jack Daniels by your son's FN and MN together, whether or not you intended it.  If you don't mind people reacting that way, fine.  If you do mind, you can't control what people think of your son's name, you can only control his name.

FWIW, Jackson is NMS and popular, but it's not bad, and I really like Daniel.

@capulet I know the "cool" comment was directed toward me, but please let my clarify that I was thinking as a teenage boy. Not that I think it's cool, but that if I was 17 year old boy and my friends called me Jack Daniels I wouldn't care. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

  • I know that wasn't directed at me. But I felt the need to address it since my child is going to be born an alcoholic in some people's eyes.

Thank you for your opinion on the name. :)

I'm excited for the next few months to fly by. I can't wait to meet our little Jackson.

And I'm in the same boat as you - I wouldn't mind either if my NN had something to do with Jack Daniels. I mean... there are much worse nicknames you can have than Jack Daniels.

I think you might be missing the point.   If you feel the need to address it now, get used to it, because you are going to be addressing it every time anyone sees or hears your son's FN and MN together.  Nobody said your son is going to be born an alcoholic.  A lot of people DID say that his name reminds them of alcohol.  That is, on its own, a totally neutral thing that might bother you or not, but it seems like it DOES bother you, so maybe you should think about that before you make the name legal.  That is all.

No point missed. Got it crystal clear.

It doesn't bother me at all - I just came for opinions. Got what I wanted. :) If I could make it legal today I would.
  • Also, I wasn't aware I couldn't post counter-opinions on a message board without being told I'm missing the point.

I said you might be missing the point, because it wasn't clear to me you understood the ramifications of what people were telling you.  I was, in my own blunt way, trying to help you out.  And again, nobody ever said you couldn't respond in any way you damn well please, but people are going to be reluctant to offer you honest opinions if you react so defensively.

  • Haha you ladies crack me up. I'm not trying to change anyone's opinion of the name.So pardon me for using the incorrect term of "counter" opinion. Maybe I should of just said I'm replying with "my" individual opinion in return. I'm simply replying with my natural reactions. Everyone reads too much "damn" emotion into neutral text.

Also, I've noticed a trend on these boards. Too many estrogen fueled rants here and OP is always wrong.
  • Your estrogen is in check just fine. :) Yeah, I know it's a super popular name. But hey - my name is Sarah so back in the day ... I had about 15-20 girls named Sarah in my grade alone. And I went to a super small school.

yes. Please attribute all people disagreeing with one another to hormone levels. How fascinating.

And I don't know how people not loving the name makes the OP "wrong".

I think we already had a conversation about reading comprehension on a different post, but by all means, let's go again. I was placing myself in the position of a person (such as OP) considering using the name and how I would feel if my son, as a teenager, were to be nn-ed after booze and thought that was cool. I was implying that I would not feel so great about my parenting if my son were to think that was cool and therefore that this would be a drawback of the name rather than a bonus. I don't know whether you REALLY don't understand that this was what I was saying or were just delivering a knee-jerk reaction without actually reading carefully.

    Ok

Really? Stella? I'm thinking something fresh like Kahlua. Or Baileys (cute and unisex!).

    I know a Kahlua...

If I have a daughter, I'm going to name her Chambord. It just sounds so klassy.

ETA: and if I have another son, I'm thinking Courvoisier. My poor Jack. I guess I will just have to change his middle name to Daniel. That's DH's name, so it's cool.
