Braxton hicks question..

I never experienced this with my first pregnancy 4 years ago, so this is all new to me. Today at work I had tightening of the lower stomach, it was so tight and hard, not really painful just really uncomfortable.. At first I thought she was curling up in a ball but it's happened so much that I know it has to be Braxton hicks. I had 5 different ones in a 45 minute time frame. I'm only 21 weeks. Is this normal?
I tried calling my dr office, but they were closed due to the ice storm we had a few days ago. /:

Re: Braxton hicks question..

  • I've been getting these a lot as well. I think they are normal. My Dr. suggested drinking a glass of water and laying on my left side. Sometimes if I'm hungry or on my feet a lot they seem to pick up in intensity.

  • I've drank so much water.. I read that I should be sure to drink plenty. But they still keep coming :(
It's probably normal I'm just a worry wart.
  • I was reading up on Braxton Hicks the other day and they said if you felt more than 4 in an hour to call your doc. I would try them again today just to be sure. :)

  • My OB doesn't worry unless I'm leaking fluids. But I'd call your again just in case you have different symptoms.

  • I just asked my OB about this yesterday.  While working out and if I'm really busy I feel a tightening in my lower stomach.  She said it's Braxton Hicks and it's totally normal for STM to feel them earlier.  I had them at the very end with DD and it was a definite tightening and loosening feeling.....this time it just seems to feel tight for awhile and then goes away when I stop working out or whatever I'm doing (so it lasts longer).  She wasn't worried at all.

It's probably normal I'm just a worry wart.

My MW also suggests eating something as well because along with dehydration, hunger can bring them on.

  • Thank you so much.
  • My doctor said 4 or more in an hour, lay on your left side, drink 30 ounces of fluid and call.

That being said, I had 7 in an hour and a half, called my doc, and never heard back. Mine calmed down, I hope yours did, too. Usually, so long as you aren't able to time them, and they aren't increasing in strength, they aren't "true" contractions. I hope you are feeling better.
  • Most doctors recommend that you call if you have more than 4-5 in an hour, but if I did that I'd be calling my Dr. every single night.  That said, if experiencing BH is unusual for you and you've had that many, I would certainly put a call in to see what they think.

  • I'm not a doc but I've been taking extra calcium in addition to my prenatal vitamins and haven't had any cramps or braxton hicks issues at all....since it affects muscle contraction I figure it can only help...

  • If you have more than 4 in an hour you should call. I was just put on a medication to stop them because I have had so many. I really would put a call into your Dr. I am also 21 weeks.
