A lovey

Those of you who have babies attached to a "lovey", stuffed animal etc, what has it done for your child? Does it calm them down, do they sleep better? How did you introduce it? Did they take to it right away?

I've got one of those things that has an animal head attached to a small fleece blanket. I've given it to DS a few times but he doesn't care for it (probably because its not chewable or has hard pieces), but I'd like to give him something to cuddle with. Does this take time? Should I try other objects? I currently have it shoved down my shirt in hopes my scent will capture his attention

Re: A lovey

  • LO has a Wubanub that has become her lovey. Cannot say enough good things about these suckers (hahaha, no pun intended!). Only use it for naps and nighttime but she just loves it and reaches for it as soon as I put her in her crib.

  • I have the exact same thing you have.  I just left it in his crib and he eventually started to grab it as soon as he was laid down.  He fights sleep like crazy, but if I give him that, he starts to fall asleep almost instantly. Love it.

Pretty much the same thing going on here only it's with an A&A blanket with the satin binding. He LOVES that satin, plays with the edge, throws it over his head, sucks it, cuddles it, grabs it and certainly helps him to self soothe, I'm sure of it!  I introduced it when he was about 3.5m and it took a week or so for him to fall in love.

DS loved his A&A security blanket right away because he liked to rub the silk edge on his cheeks. He also has one of the stuffed animal heads attached to a fleece blanket. He isn't attached to it but he plays with it if he wakes at night before falling back to sleep. I keep his them in his crib so he only uses them for sleep. He's yet to become attached to something that he wants to carry around all the time.

I'm scared to leave something in the crib per SIDS risk

  • We have a couple of those little blankets with the stuffed animal heads, I rotate them through the wash so she doesn't get totally hooked on one. I made my older daughter 3 lovey's (just small squares of minkie fabric) because she was getting hooked on this one blanket when she was a baby so I just bought similar fabric from Joann's.

I really like having some kind of lovey because no matter where we are, it always signals sleep to them and makes them comfortable sleeping at other peoples houses or hotels or in the stroller or carseat or whatever. We only let them have their lovey's at nap and night.

As for sids risk, I don't think the small squares of fabric are really a concern at this age. I don't know how old your son is, but I started giving my daughter her lovey around 5 months old. Do what you're comfortable with, but the only purpose of a lovey that I can think of is to give it to them as a sleep association, otherwise it's just another toy.

How old is your LO now? My pedi said that once baby can put something over his face (like his A&A breathable muslin cloth security blanket) he can also take it off and that I had nothing to worry about. I also posted a question on this topic exactly a month or so back, perhaps you can search it, in the 3-6m board. Lots of us leave our LO's with a security blanket or a "lovey"

I think the SIDS risk goes down significantly after 4m?? If you're worried about leaving him with something but what to introduce something, try the Aden&Anais muslin security blankets. They are breathable cloth. My DS puts it over his face! I was so scared the first time I saw this (he was about 4.5m) but my pedi said it was okay. The breathable cloth is very thin.

  • I started giving DS a lovey when we did sleep training, so 7.5 months. Its a little doggie head with tiny blanket attached. I slept with it for one night, then put it in his crib. After about a week he started looking for it when I laid him down. Now when I put him in his crib, he grabs it, rolls on to his side, and cuddles with it. I'm off to buy a backup this week.

You should do what you are comfortable with as you are the mom, but for me personally, a very small stuffed animal is really not much of a risk at this point (our guy is 7.5 months old). We leave one of those blankets with the head on it in his crib all the time, and we also cover him with either an A&A muslin blanket or a holey crocheted blanket when he sleeps.

  • We have a little blanket lovey as well. Its a small square clanket with a silk trim. DD loves it. We give it to her when she naps and sleeps for the night. She likesto put it on her face. As soon as you give it to her she holds on to it and knows it's time tosleep. Took a bit for her to get use to it but now she loves it :)
  • So do your LOs have the lovey with them as they are falling asleep, or is it just in the crib anytime they wake up?  I have tried introducing a lovey with DD and she hasn't really been interested.  I would like to make the association but not sure if I'm going about it wrong.  She usually nurses to sleep and then I put her in the crib, so I'm not sure if we should be holding it while she nurses, or if it just should always be in her crib?  Also, if you LO goes to daycare do you send the lovey there for naps?

Yes, LO has it when they are falling asleep. My LO does not nurse to sleep so I when I lay him down in his crib I hand it to him,or if he sees it,he just grabs it. You could give it to her as she is nursing to sleep. We only offer it at sleep time (bedtime or naps). You could sleep with it to put your scent on it. She'll catch on eventually! My LO takes that thing all over the crib with him at night (he moves alot) and I see him playing with it as he falls asleep.

  • I nurse to sleep at night but put him down awake for naps. We keep the lovey in the crib all the time. He definitely rubs and cuddles it when going down for naps, and he will also play with it some when he wakes up. It's there if he wakes up n the night, but I'm really not sure if he ever uses it then or not.
