Coffee/Caffeine Drinkers

I was a huge coffee drinker before I got pregnant. During 1st tri, coffee was revolting, so I easily avoided it. Now that my taste for it has returned (and energy has not), I've been drinking it more frequently for a boost. Working full time and chasing around a 13 month old requires energy that I am lacking. I try not to have it every day, but I'm finding it harder and harder to go a day without a cup or two. I'm feeling more than a little guilty about it.

What are the May Mommas doing these days? Coffee every day? Occasionally?

Re: Coffee/Caffeine Drinkers

  • I still have at least a cup a day, but the first two are half-caff, and after that I have decaf.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.

  • I drink one cup a day during my work week and none on the weekends! You can't just stop cold turkey
  • I also work full time and have a toddler at home (20months). I drink it every day. I avoided it in first tri because it made me want to vomit but now I drink it. I have 1 cup of coffee every morning and usually have a can of coke with lunch. My OB said 2-3 caffeinated drinks per day was totally fine.

  • I drink one every now and then (and since finals are approaching, now and then is turning into once a day). Although I do try to do decaf when I get Starbucks. And if I don't have coffee, I'll usually splurge on a soda (but never both on the same day). Although my doctor told me that up to 200 mg per day is fine.

  • I've been drinking a regular cup of coffee every morning the whole time.  Sometimes I have a Coke too later in the day if I'm dragging.

  • I drink a cup of half-caff every morning. I have a diet (ohmygawd) Coke about once every week or so. It does help my headaches a little, too.

  • I still haven't got my taste for it back, so I drink a can of diet coke in the morning. I'll have another one in the afternoon if I'm still dragging.

  • I was a huge coffee drinker. Didn't care for it during first tri. Now I have a few cups a week, usually decaf unless I am working night shift. I'm bad with soda though. I try to drink caffeine free but I usually have a Pepsi a day. Maybe 2.
  • I think a cup a day you're fine. If you do lattes you can probably get away wih two. Don't go crazy but moderation is fine I think.
  • I was definitely all about the caffeine (I was hooked on coffee by junior high, true story) but cut back while we were TTC.  I wasn't having any during early pregnancy, but started getting massive headaches around week 11 or so.  The doctor recommended some caffeine if acetaminophen didn't help (it didn't), so I usually have a cup of tea in the middle of the day (when they tend to strike) now.

  • I have one cup every day. I thought if it wasn't excessive, caffeine was fine.
  • Coffe everyday for me! Usually 1.5-2 cups. I did the same with DD in 2nd/3rd tri. It's slightly more necessary with a toddler to keep up with!

  • I kcup a day for me! :)
  • One cup of half caff made into an iced coffee during the week. 5:30am calls for caffeine, pregnant or not. I wasn't drinking it during first tri because of m/s but I'm back to it now that m/s is gone. I early drink other forms of caffeine so I figure I'm ok

  • That's exactly how I was, it disgusted me in first tri but now I'm back to one latte or coffee a day, at most I'll do two. I try to stay within the recommended range. Baby is still alive and kicking.

  • I have a cup of regular in the morning and either a 1/2 caf in the afternoon or herbal tea. I also have 2-3 cans of diet coke a week. I used to drink diet coke like water so that was harder for me to give up!

  • I drink a cup a day. If I'm not feeling it then I drink a cup or two of tea. I'm not a soda drinker at all so no changes there.
  • I drink a cup per day. I'm not sure I'd ever be able to give it up completely. I just love the taste and smell of coffee. So comforting!

  • I have 2 cups of tea a day & hate the taste of decaf tea. I think 3 cups/day is nothing to sweat about
  • I drink a Pepsi everyday.

I think a cup or two of coffee or any caffeinated beverage a day is fine. My doctor said no more than 200mg a day.

  • One cup of morning coffee a day
  • 1 in the morning and SOMETIMEs if I'm really tired one in the afternoon. My doc encouraged me to keep drinking it with my first as it helps keep things regular as well ;)
  • As the PPs said, up to 200 mg a day is fine.

Before we started TTC, I was drinking two cups a day and occasionally a Coke on top of that. Once we were TTC, I cut back to one cup and the occasional Coke. I had intended to keep drinking my one cup while pregnant but my body couldn't tolerate it after about 4.5 weeks. For a while, I couldn't do tea, hot chocolate, or Coke either. Eventually, Coke was ok and I relied on that. Now I can handle half a cup of coffee a few times a week and I just have a Coke on other days. Still can't do tea and I miss it!

  • I drink about 1/2 cup a day. I don't like strait coffee, so I always mix it with cocoa powder, sugar and milk. Mocha mocha!

  • I usually have a can of coke a day. It settled my stomach when the nausea was at its worst.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I drink mostly decaf. I just like the taste and ritual of having my morning coffee - it has very little if anything to do with the caffeine.

My biggest problem is soda - I crave it!  And it has to be coke.  I won't let myself buy it and only get it when I go out so that helps a little bit but I'd love to stay away from it.  Soda and the internet = devil in disguise.
  • I've been really good and only drinking coffee if I really have no energy. I'm trying to cut back as much as I can.
  • I don't drink coffee even when not pregnant, but I do have a bad diet coke habit.  I've gotten better (I don't want it quite as much as I used to), though it's still the fluid I want the most (other than milk).  I try to stick to 2 cans or a 20oz bottle per day which is well under the 200mg caffeine limit so I feel okay about it.  I just try to drink a lot of water on top of it.

  • My MD told me it is okay to drink every day but not to exceed 200mg

Since getting pregnant I have had a cup a day. It helps keep my headaches away :)
  • For coffee I usually do decaf and save my caffeine for a soda later in the day.  Although I did splurge on a gingerbread latte full caff at Starbucks today.
  • 200mg/day is what you're allowed. I did the math last pregnancy & that was almost 6 coke zeros. I think you're fine with a cup of coffee a day...

  • I drink a good bit of soda, like 2-3 cans a day but one can had 30mg of caffeine so I'm still well under the daily recommended max. I drink decaf if I want coffee since I drink so much soda.

  • I need my coffee. First tri it made me sick to my stomach so I mostly avoided it...maybe a couple cups a week. But now I have a travel size one every day, usually half caff.

  • I have successfully avoided coffee but I just can't give up sweet tea. It's not even for the caffeine, it's just a taste addiction. I'm a southern girl, y'all. I have diabetes too which makes it even worse! Guilty. I always take my insulin before I drink it though, to help control my blood sugar. I have cut back a lot but some days I just can't help it. So far it seems to be balancing out.

  • I changed my coffee to decaf, but have a glass of Dr. Pepper every other day.

With DS, I had a 16 oz Dr. Pepper daily.
