Rib breaking sensation?

Is it normal to feel like your ribs are breaking down the center? This usually happens to me at night. As a FTM, I'm not really sure if this is a common occurrence during pregnancy.

Re: Rib breaking sensation?

  • That makes me less paranoid. Thank you. I figured they move, but I wasn't expecting it from the center.

  • @toothpastechica I will definitely do that. When it happens, it feels like my breath is knocked out of me for a few minutes.
  • Oh no haven't heard of this symptom. Hope you feel better!
  • That sounds insanely uncomfortable/painful!  Here's hoping the occurrences ease up soon.
  • @desireemonique Thank you. I hope it doesn't happen to you or anyone else on this board. I'll probably call my doctor to make sure this is normal.
  • @NYJodway Thank you. Thank God it only lasts for a few minutes!
  • i don't have "rib breaking", but my ribs on my left side have been sore for 2 days.  it MAY be from puking, but it may just be stuff moving around. who knowsssss

  • I can relate, I'm having alot of rib pain. I think the extra weight is exacerbating an old auto accident injury. I hope you find so relief!

    edit: spelling

I was in an accident four years ago as well. Hmmm. Maybe that has something to do with it...
  • Mine hurts so bad when I sneeze!
  • I I'm 22 weeks and I have been having the same pain since about week 15 but didn't know how to describe it...it's more do when I lay on my left side (which we're supposed to do right?)...glad to know I'm not alone
  • I've got rib pain on the right, since 18 weeks. But it is there pretty much all day until I have the opportunity to lay down and rest. Luckily it's not the take your breath away pain in the sternum you describe, but it's definitely painful. My doc said it is called costochondritis and is an inflammation of the cartiledge that connects the ribs and sternum. This happens from the expansion and stretching of the abdomen. Mine is worse when sitting, I'm assuming everything is being pushed up, so I try to stand when at work, which sucks cuz the my legs and lower back hurt, but it's better than rib pain. I've also been getting prenatal massages, which in the moment feels good but doesn't help after much. Heat or cold was suggested by my masseuse as well as icy hot by my MD. Here's hoping at some point the ribs get used to being stretched cuz I can't imagine pushing during labor with this pain!
  • I had this last week! I was sitting straight up in the car and it hurt to take a full breath. It went away and I didn't think anything of it until I saw your post. Mine was maybe 1.5 inches under where my bra band sits.
Hopefully it doesn't get any worse for you! Please let us know how you make out at the dr.
  • Thank you ladies for the support. I can't believe some of you have to go through this pain for long periods of time. I can't imagine hours of that. I hope all of us get well and the pain doesn't get too extreme!
