Cloth diapers

Okay so I know it's early to talk about this, but are there any cloth diapering moms or FTMs planning to cloth diaper here? What are your favourite diapers?

I'm a huge fan of kawaii pocket diapers. For this one I plan to CD from birth so I'm gonna buy a few diapers every month to build my stash.

Re: Cloth diapers

  • Yes, I have a few different ones.  I'm a fan of FuzziBunz.  I kept my XS Fuzzi Bunz, Sun Babys, gdiapers, bumgenius...I've heard good things about Flip covers so might try those.  Even the XS were too small for DS as a newborn, so we had to use tiny pampers at first.  :)

  • I'd love to cloth diaper, but I will most likely be sending my baby to daycare... Probably have to send them with "traditional"/disposable diapers then..? Maybe I can cloth diaper on the weekends..?
  • Yup. CD'ed DD from the beginning. We use mostly sized AIOs (BG 3.0s ). We do have a handful of pockets (4.0s) and Freetimes for nighttime.

I'm just psyched about not having to buy any new diapers this time around. We have more than enough. It was one of the reasons I went with the sized diapers instead of one size.

  • Loved BG elementals but now he pees out of them. I'm a huge fan of best bottoms too. They hold a lot and can be used with other inserts (although we really like the inserts, the hemp ones are incredibly trim). I have flip covers but I find you can't really use them more then once because the flap near the front always gets wet and stinks if you don't change it. At night we just use disposable because I'm sick of trying to find the right combo.

We had the same problem with the flips.

  • We're doing a hybrid version of CDing, I do cloth except for long trips, dh does disposable. I have econobum's from DS, they are adjustable. IDK if they'll fit NB, I started him in them around 4/6 mo. A friend told me after a lot of experience that old school prefolds with a simple cover were her fav. I decided to try, since after my shower, I have a million prefolds.

Interested to see what has come out int he past few years:)

  • We have Fuzzibunz One Size Elite and LOVE them!  DS has worn the same 30 diapers since his umbilical cord stump fell off.  They adjust on the sides as well as front and back so you can get the best fit.  The plan is to potty train DS in the next few months and then use the same diapers with our new LO.  Daycare prefers them as they rarely have blowouts.  We got everything from www.gogonatural.com and would highly recommend.
  • We did cloth from birth with DD and at daycare.  I think it helped that I work for the school where DD went to daycare and I knew that state regs allowed it and I had a kid in my class that did cloth.  Most people have found that if you show up at the tour with a stuffed pocket the conversation goes much smoother.  Then there's no preconceived notions about what you're talking about.

  • I've cloth diapered DS from the beginning and use mostly Bum Genius 4.0s. Sometimes we use prefolds too, but he does get a rash more with those. When he was a newborn, we used the prefolds with covers.

We do daycare full time. They never had anyone ask to use cloth before us and were a little resistant. Once they realized that they use velcro and not pins, they were fine. We also send a Planet Wise wetbag to store the dirty ones in and they said as long as they don't smell, it won't be problem. We haven't had issues at all. We just have to clean them out every day when we get home.

I'm excited we won't have to buy any diapers for this baby. Unless we have a girl, then I'll be tempted to throw some pink ones into the mix.

  • @Audgedawn before babies start eating real food (solids), you can just throw the diapers straight in the wash. Once they start solids you need to spray the poop out of them first.

Otherwise, we throw dirty diapers in a pail and wash them every 2-3 days. It really hasn't been that much work for us.

  • I used cloth for my first till she was potty trained. I'll be using cloth for this one too. I loved Kawaii, FuzziBunz, and Bum Genius. Hated sustainablebabyish. They shredded after a few months. You should check out the cloth diaper board for more help. It's really easy and saved us a TON of money. I spent about $550 total on my first's diaper collection.

  • I cloth diapered out daughter.  We use bum genius.  We really loved them and will do the same with this new LO.  DD is just about potty trained now=)

  • We have been CD'ing DS since he came home from the hospital.  After trying lots of different things, my favorites are flips or thirsties covers with prefolds or flats and bum genius 4.0s stuffed with flats.  We also use fitteds with wool at night.

I love CDing and it's super easy.  When baby is just breastfed or formula fed, you throw everything (including poopy diapers) in the wash.  Once they start eating solids, you just remove the poop first (I use a diaper sprayer).

  • Regarding the when the baby starts eating solid foods, we use a disposable cloth liner that catches most of the poop.  We dump it in the toilet, flush, and stick the diaper in our pail for daily diaper laundry.  We do our diapers on the sanitary cycle each evening.  Takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes a load and we let the diapers hang dry overnight.

  • My husband and I both enjoying cloth diapering. Mainly because you save so much money. We started cloth diapering right after DS's umbilical cord fell off. He is now 13 months and we plan to cloth diaper with baby #2 also. Kawaii Pure and Natural were my favorite newborn diapers! Lil Joeys and Grovia's did not fit DS, he was 9lb 5oz. I also used Alvas which I did not love at the beginning but after about two weeks I started to like them quite a bit. Sunbaby was the other brand we used and they were second to Kawaii IMO. After newborn the bulk of our stash are from Alvababy and they work just fine. I bought them through a co-op to get a better deal. My favorites now are JCTrade which is a china brand I am not sure if they have a website or not I got them through a co-op as well. I do not like the OS Kawaii, they leave marks on DS legs. We also use Sunbaby size 2 and I like them fine. Good luck with your research!
  • FTM planning to CD. Should I register for a few different brands and see what works before I invest in one type? Worried because my SO was a huge baby and I was a very small babe. Not sure what we will end up with.

  • I cd'd my daughter from birth and we used prefolds, all in ones (BG) and fuzzibunz for the nb stage. Once she outgrew the prefolds, we went to a variety of pockets (Fuzzibunz OS elite, BG, Alva, Lotusbumz, etc). In the beginning my faves were the FB, but now I don't really have a fave-they are all pretty similar to me. I would love to mix in some more all in ones but they just take so long to dry...

  • We CDed DD from birth.  All our diapers are one size, but our Charlie Banana and Fuzzibunz worked best when DD was a newborn, as you can adjust the elastic for the legs.

I am hoping to potty train DD within the next 6 months so we will have all our CDs for LO2... but we'll see if she is ready for it or not.

  • Does using CDs save money? I've never even considered using CDs until reading this so I'm pretty clueless... googled it and seen the avg price is $14-$20 so if a baby goes through 10-20 a day that could be pretty expensive right? Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I'm just trying to understand some of the benefits of CDs..
  • @cupcake529 yes. You do save money. Babies very rarely go through more than 12 a day (and that's right in the beginning, when most people choose to use prefolds which are much cheaper).

I did the math a few weeks ago. We'll save (conservative estimate) about $700-800 with our current daughter. Since we won't need to buy any more for #2, we'll save around $1500 with that child.

  • We definitely want to CD our baby, but I'm glad there's a lot of time still before we're due so we can figure all this out! So many options...
  • I want to CD.  Reading about them, though, makes me want to stab my eye with an ice pick.  Prefolds, AIOs, one insert, two inserts, snap/velcro/pin, I don't get the difference between all of the different kinds yet and it's enough to make me abandon it all and go for the nearest pack of disposables.

However, a friend gave me 6 CD covers- a mix of Flipz and BumGenius, and a ton of inserts.. so I guess I have to figure it out because it'd be stupid not to :\

  • We use Alvas and Sunbaby (with a few randoms I got online or at consignments sales). I didn't start till DS was 6 mo, so I'll have a little learning to do if the ones I have don't fit a teeny baby (DS was 5.14).

You most definitely save money. There is no question about that.

@aliletz, the jargon can be overwhelming, but once you find a type you like and figure out your washing routine...it's super easy.

Also, this topic has already come up a few times, so there is plenty to search in this board as well as the CD board.

  • Man I love all the CD mommas on here. You guys are great!! I always love an excuse to talk cloth diapers.

@aliletz The abbreviations can be overwhelming but once you go to a baby shop that carries cloth diapers and ask some questions it really helps too. I'll try to explain some now tho.

AIO is all in one, that means the inserts are built into the diaper so it's the closest to a disposable in that you just have to put it on your baby.

    Pocket diaper
s, are a water proof liner with a slit in each end (sometimes only one) that make it so you can put an absorbent insert in. You use 2 inserts if you have an issue where the diaper leaks after a short time, because the absorbent liner is already full. (I didn't have this issue till 1 yr old)

    Prefolds
are a cotton material that you use as a diaper and then put a water proof cover over top. (I'm sorry this is not the type of diaper i know much about.)

    snaps vs. velcro vs. pins.
When using pocket diapers and aio you shouldn't need pins. I've heard of some people pinning their prefolds, or using an elastic product called snappies. Snaps and velcro are the 2 ways AIO or pocket or waterproof covers are held on. Velcro is quick and easy. As the child gets older also easy for them to undo. Snaps take a touch longer but i like them because my DD still can't undo them. Thus limiting her making messes with poopy diapers
  • Also. We like snaps because the Velcro (aplix) is a bit rough on bellies. At least for us. The tabs are a bit stiff so they rub when baby is sitting.
  • I like my Bum Genius for larger bums and fuzzy buns for smaller bums.

Almost all of our diapers are aplix. We've never had this problem, but I really don't like the aplix and wish we would have gone with snaps from the beginning. The aplix is getting really worn on the diapers that we've used the most. It's to the point where DD can undo the tabs THROUGH her pajamas. I'll probably be going through and converting some of the worst ones to snaps before #2 comes through.

  • We plan to CD but have no idea yet what type we'll use. There's a CD 101 class that's offered for free several times a year. We'll go to that so we can get some hands on learning.
  • I CD my DS.  Everyone was hating on them until they saw how cute and awesome they were.  The majority of our stash is Peachy Greens and TotsBots with a couple of pockets and random WAHMs.  I will be the first to admit that I HATE shitty diapers, but I am so grateful that I installed my diaper sprayer.  It's a lifesaver.

(Try picking out grape skins from your washing machine from a dirty diaper that you overlooked.  GROOOOOSSSS!!!)

  • I use lalabye baby diapers, since they're designed and sold by a mom who is local (or at least was until she moved to Texas). I just found it more convenient to pick them up at her place and know I was helping a mom instead of a big company. I have about 80% lalabyes, 18% alvas and two AIOs that I don't remember the brand name of and an apple cheeks that I got new for an awesome price. I stocked up for number 2 over black friday.

I definitely save money. I probably put up about $500 and we started using them as soon as the NB diapers I got from the hospital and my shower ran out. Our water bill is maybe $5 more expensive, if that, and the same with the electric bill since I hang them out to dry. We do use disposables when we're traveling, just because I think it's rude to ask someone if I can wash my kid's poopy diapers in their washer and I'm pretty sure my MIL would mess them up if she stole them to wash them for us.

  • Don't get velcro! The two velcro ones I have wore out REALLY fast... Now they sit in the back of the drawer as the "diapers of last resort" when mommy was lazy and didn't do the laundry lol

Until DD was about 15 months, I loved my Velcro.  I think this is totally a personal choice.

OP- One thing to remember is just like with paper diapers cloth diapers have different fits.  What works well on one baby wont necessarily fit well on another.  If you haven't seen it yet, check out Jillians Drawers.  They have an awesome trial package.

  • We use almost all BumGenius 4.0s with snaps. I love them and wish we hadn't waited until DD was 6 mos old to start using them. I think with this one I'm going to try and buy a few newborn diapers so we can start from the beginning!

  • I'm a FTM and I plan to cloth diaper full time. We have started to slowly buy a stash. Most of ours is GMD prefolds so far

  • I'm looking at kawaii pure and natural newborn diapers for this one as a newborn. Has anyone tried these?
  • I'm considering this too as a FTM, but it's so overwhelming. Can you put cloth diapers in the dryer? Can anyone explain the differences between cloth diapering and disposables? What happens when you need to change a diaper while out? You carry a dirty one around until you get home? Like I said, I am a FTM and have no friends with babies nearby so everything is totally new and confusing to me. Thanks ladies :)
