1st Trimester

dating ultrasound

Hi everyone!  I found out over a week ago that I am pregnant with number two and I am so thrilled!!! However, it is frustrating because I can't tell anyone in my own family because I don't even know my due date.  The doctor suggested I would need a dating ultrasound to figure out... I am curious how many of you needed this and how long did they make you wait to go get this ultrasound?

Just a little background information.  My period tends to be every 38 days.  I was so stressed because my mother had cancer and I was taking time off from work to care for her after surgery.  I had my period September 3, 2013 and haven't had it since.  I tested with frp test on day 46 with no period and it was a bfn.  Things got so hectic with my mom's surgery preparations and coordinating things for work I didn't take a test until a few days before Thanksgiving and that was my bfp!!!

I can't wait for my dd to be a big sister and to bring a new baby into this world.  Can't wait to start working on the nursery!!!  Good luck to all of you who are pregnant and I hope you all have a happy, safe pregnancy! :)

Re: dating ultrasound

  • I did a dating ultrasound at 8w1d. It was nice because it was far enough along to check the heartbeat, etc.

Congratulations and good luck to you as well!

  • So you're between 6 weeks (if you tested right at 14dpo and got a positive then around 2 weeks since then.) and 10.5 weeks. Probably somewhere in the middle.

I'd see if they could get you in for dating in the next week and a half so if you are the farthest along possible- you still have the option of first trimester scans. It's best to get a dating ultrasound done during the first trimester though- that's when they are the most accurate. Once you get into the second trimester baby begins to grow on it's own unique growth curve- but before then it's very very standardized.

I didn't need a dating ultrasound because I got here through IVF- but I wish you the best of luck :)

  • My doctor wants me to wait til I'm at least 6 weeks to ensure we see everything because I have had 6 MCs. So as long as you are at that point at least you should be fine. Good luck and congrats!

  • My place did one no matter what at 8 weeks. But since you don't know when it happened they will probably do it at the first appointment. I know mine would have if I wasn't tempting and didn't have regular periods.

  • I had a dating ultrasound at 8 weeks. But I knew the date of my last period so it was completely accurate without the ultrasound.
  • I knew the date of my last period, but have had abnormal periods for my whole life (except while on the pill).  I had an appt at about (what I thought was) 5w, and they asked me to schedule for a u/s about 8w.  I scheduled for 9w, because I thought the pic would be better, but ended up learning instead of being 9w4d, I'm 8w0d.  ;)
