Emergency-C

Have any of you taken Emergen-C while pregnant to fight off a cold?? I think I'm coming down with one and I'd love to take it because it helps. I'll call my doctor in a bit, but thought I'd check with you.

Re: Emergency-C

  • I believe on the package it says not to take it if you're pregnant, but I'd check with your doc.

  • I think it says right on the label not to take it while pregnant. But that might have been AirBorne.

  • How odd, I looked on both the box and packets and it doesn't say anything about not taking while pregnant. I went online and of course it says to contact your doctor before taking, so I'll give him a buzz. Gotta love working in a petri dish!!

I didnt see this on my box either, and on their website it says to consult with your physician.  Ive also read that emergen-c was safe to take while pregnant as long as you arent taking a prenatal vitamin... curious to know what your doc says!

  • Those don't take while pregnant warnings are just standard. I've used it for short term use and felt fine about it. Obviously talk to your doctor, though.

  • The connection isn't well established.

As for how much is too much, you'll know because you'll be running to the bathroom!

  • I asked the nurse at my OB/GYN office and she said that it was okay to take. So what I did was got a big glass of water and poured one packet in it and separated that out and drink it throughout the day so it wasn't a ton of vitamin C all at once!

I find that it tastes a lot better if you actually mix it with a bottle of vitamin water C (orange) which will give you more vitamin C… But if you poured in there and then spread it out throughout the entire day it's fine!

Something else you can do if you feel like you're getting sick is to drink Kiefer. Your average yogurt has two or three strands of good bacteria while Kiefer has 10. So if you drink a fourth a cup in the morning it will not only help you have a fabulous poops but it will help your body fight stuff!!

  • I take it about 3 time I week since I work in a hospital. I talked to the doctors at work and it's 100% fine to take!!!! Doesn't say it anywhere can't take while pregnant! I'm fine my baby's fine. Take it all you want it just all vitamins
  • There are specify kinds that aren't okay but they say so on the package. The normal kind is fine - my OB said one a day.

  • I might be thinking of Airborne that's on the package and not Emergen-C? Maybe? I dunno, I defer to your OB/MW.
  • I've taken EmergenC more than once, when I was like 8wks I had a cold coming on and it nipped it. Box said to check with doc & doc told me to 1/2 the packet (one 1/2 in am and one 1/2 in pm)...

I'm a take-vitamin-c-like-there's-no-tomorrow, and I still take 1000 a day. I work with too many dirty men and I refuse to get sick, gotta keep my immune system up!

  • Some of the emergenC's have other vitamins in on them as well and those may have things that you don't want too much of. But like PP have said One-A-Day of the regular plain old emergenC is going to be fine. And like I said I would spread it out through the day!

  • I have taken it with last two pregnancies and doc said it was ok. That stuff is the best!
  • It's airborne that's a no no not emergen-c. I just called my obgyn about this yesterday:)
  • i'm a big emergen-c proponent.  they have a lot of gimmicky proprietary blends that might possibly contain herbs or supplements that aren't supposed to be taken willy-nilly while pregnant.  maybe this is the reason why some labels indicate it's not recommended during pregnancy.  my regular old vitamin C version is a standy-by all winter long, and i continue to take it while gestating.

PPs are right that vitamin c is a water soluble vitamin, and excess amounts are therefore just filtered out by the kidneys and released in urine.  there are studies showing toxicity symptoms, but the studies were something like at 10,000-20,000 mg per day on a long term basis, and each packet only has between 500 and 1,000, i believe, depending on the different type.

my son LOVES emergen-C (he calls it "spicy juice") but i will make him drink only half a packet at a time.  i have a personal rule of thumb that anything more than 500mg at a time isn't helpful, as the intestines can't absorb and process amounts in excess of this limit.  plus, he's a kid and he doesn't need as much anyway.  the person who suggested making it and sipping throughout the day has a great idea...  just be aware that vitamin C isn't that stable of a vitamin, and tends to start breaking down over time when exposed to oxygen, light or heat.
  • I liked emergenc during my first pregnancy for a little energy boost, I guess because of the b vitamins.

  • I took it and airborne with my last pregnancy because I was working retail during cold/flu season. Never even thought about it being unsafe. Vitamin C is water soluble not fat soluble so as long as you're staying under the recommended max daily dose which I believe is 1000 mg your body should pee out the excess. You can check with your doctor if you are concerned.
