If breastfeeding how many bottles do I need?

I'm planning to exclusively breastfeed (planning! *crosses fingers*!). I know I'll need to buy bottles before I go back to work and maybe one or two to have on hand before then. I'm wondering how many I should get and what size (smaller or larger) before I go back to work in case I'm away from the baby?

I feel like these are dumb questions but would appreciate your input!

Re: If breastfeeding how many bottles do I need?

  • Is someone going to stay home with baby when you go back to work, or is your LO going to a daycare? I think we had to have 3-4 at the daycare, then we had another 2-3 at home.

I would agree with PP to wait until you find out what your baby prefers, although mine were just happy to have food so they didn't much care.

As far as size, the larger bottles will obviously hold smaller amounts so that's what I tend to go with. If I receive 4-5 oz bottles, I'll use them, I won't exchange.

  • I would just buy one small bottle, try it, see if little one likes it. And by like it, I know our son specifically liked a certain shaped nipple (medela bottle, similac nipples). Also, you will check how long it takes them to finish the bottle- and how fussy they are after the bottle. I know my DS was super fussy after the playtex drop ins....they just didn't work as well for us. I really liked the medela bottles, because I could pump directly into the bottle. So you may want some that are adaptable to your pump. We personally liked the smaller bottles, but did have one set of the 8 oz. for this little one, I have a similac bottle, tommy tippee, and a set of medela (that ill use with pump if baby doesnt like) and will start with those three.
