High-Risk Pregnancy

Polyhydramnios

I have had a lot of complications with my pregnancy, and the baby is sick (congenital heart defect and t21). I am being monitored for excessive fluid and am supposed to have measurements every 1-2 weeks. I am 26 weeks and some change based on doctor's charts. Last week my fluids measured at 28 cms (not too bad) but it is up to 36 cms this week.

The doctors were out and I was only able to meet with a nurse practitioner. She told me I need to come back Wednesday of next week to meet with the doctors to discuss the possibility of a fluid reduction. No other information given. On top of that I have been having a really hard time with keeping my breath and have passed out a few times when lying down and can't recline to sleep at all (I had this at the end of my last pregnancy, so know it is normal and related to measuring far ahead.)

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out the real severity of the situation since I haven't been able to speak with an OB. I am transferring care to a hospital w/ high risk and cardiology departments in January, so I went ahead and called there and left a message. If this is a real issue and it grew that much in a week, I am nervous to wait another week. If it is no big deal, then I want to know so I don't worry until Wednesday. Anyone have experience with excessive fluid or a reduction in specific?

Just to add a little further information, he will have open heart surgery after birth, and needs to stay inside full term. So the doctors are extra careful about anything that could cause pre-term labor.

Re: Polyhydramnios

  • I am so sorry that you're having to worry about this on top of everything else. I don't have any experience with reduction but did have high fluid levels a few weeks ago.

Saw my MFM on a Tuesday and was given a reading of 32 by the ultrasound tech- they called in MFM to remeasure and she only got a 28. The following Monday I saw my OB who ran a quick scan in his office and my levels were down to 16!

The way it was explained to me is that they can only measure pockets of fluid where there is no baby or cord present. So all it takes is for your baby to roll over or stretch out to completely change the numbers.

Have you had your glucose tolerance test done yet? It was recommended to cut back or eliminate carbs to reduce levels. Maybe you could try that until you see the doctors next week? It might not have any effects but would at least be something to try. Hope the levels even out and your little one can keep cooking as long as possible!

  • Thanks for your experience! I actually did my glucose test yesterday before the scan. I should get results next week.

I was able to speak with my MFMs yesterday, and they are expediting the transfer of my care so they can evaluate the need for an amnioreduction. They also clarified that the fluid is no harm to the baby and the need for a reduction is based purely on my comfort and the fact I'm having a hard time. So I feel much calmer going into the weekend. I have too many unknowns in my pregnancy, so I tend to latch on and obsess over these smaller more concrete issues. So the real conclusion is I need to chill out! ;)
  • I'm sorry you're going through this. I actually had the opposite - olgiohydraminos so I'm of no help but I know it's hard to always get these types of diagnosises.
