No U/S today or at 8 week appt?! So much for telling our families at Christmas

So annoyed. I had my initial OB visit today, and one also scheduled for 8 weeks on 12/23. I thought for sure that when the appt was made for 12/23 they stated I would have an U/S. Apparently not.

Now I'm definitely not comfortable telling our families at Christmas. :(

So so bummed.

Re: No U/S today or at 8 week appt?! So much for telling our families at Christmas

  • My dr's office doesnt do ultrasounds unless there is an issue or concern until the mid pregnancy one at like 15-20 weeks. While I am thankful I dont 'need' an early ultrasound it is nice to know the baby is growing and healthy and see that heartbeat. I found a third party place where I live that does like the 3D-4D ultrasounds and they also do heartbeat ultrasounds after 5 weeks. So I scheduled one for 12/20 when I will be a little over 9 weeks so we can give the grandparents a picture of the ultrasound for Christmas and announce it. Might see if you have something like that near you.

  • Great idea! Thanks! I'll see if there are any in my area.

I had 3 in the first tri with DS and am considered high risk due to hypertension. I was just surprised. And it wouldn't be a big deal if it weren't the holidays and wanting to tell family while they are together.

Um, totally normal. My office doesn't do any until the anatomy scan unless you elect for additional testing.
ETA: just so I am understanding you, you normally wouldn't care, but because it is around the holidays you think you deserve one?

  • Totally normal!  I will only have 1 u/s at 20 weeks unless some complications pop up later on.  I have gotten to hear the heartbeat twice now though with the doppler at 10 weeks and 14 weeks - hopefully once you pass 9 weeks you can hear it that way!

  • OP- a lot of doctors offices will not even do the first appt until 8-10 weeks. With that said, I announced all 3 of mine around 8 weeks (before an U/S).

Wow. Definitely not feeling "entitled" to an u/s...not sure why that has been assumed.

DH's cousin announced their 2nd pregnancy at just over 7 weeks.  At a family gathering, she had her DS casually wear a "big brother" t-shirt until everyone caught on.  However, they did an u/s at her 8 week appt and found she had a missed m/c.

Also, I will add that I had two back to back chemicals in August & September of this year...

That is why I am hesitant to say anything without seeing LOs heartbeat.  And it would have been nice to announce to families at Christmas - otherwise it wouldn't have been a big deal.

Regardless, I did find a place that does heartbeat u/s in our area by certified ultrasound techs for $49.  I have made a tentative appt, and will talk it over with DH.  Thanks for the suggestion @jbrigman1!

I'm not sure where you're getting the entitlement from here? The OP is saying that she'd be more comfortable announcing to her family if she had seen the baby on an ultrasound and could have that confidence that all is well. I don't think there's anything unusual in wanting that reassurance. She doesn't come across to me like the usual "OMG, no early ultrasound?! Is this normal?! Whyyyy?!" type of posters.

    Pretty much!  :)

I'm not surprised they didn't do an ultrasound. But I am surprised they didn't at least attempt a Doppler. Granted 8weeks is pretty early for it to work. Honestly if you are that worried about announcing without hearing the heartbeat, I would just not worry about announcing until later. S htel e chance of miscarriage goes down, It sucks but so does having an early ultrasound that is medically unnecessary and falsely reassuring because such early ultrasounds mean so little, having it be normal, announcing, then losing the baby and having to unannounce. Granted if you have a supportive family you may feel comfortable doing this. But if not, I would definitely hold off on announcing rather than using a non-medical service to do it. But I am just overly paranoid that given their lack of credentials, experience, and medical training they wouldn't be able to recognize an actual problem and I would get a false sense of security. Again though I am super paranoid. Good luck!
  • eywj I think OP was referring to two separate appointments. Her ticker and other posts state that she's only 5 and a half weeks along, which is way too early for Doppler.

"So someone lied her ass off to get an appointment at a non-medical ultrasound boutique.
As soon as they see how small the fetus is, they will escort her out and refer her back to her doctor."

I am okay with responses and opinions on my posts.  I am not ok with being called a liar.  Who would be dumb enough to lie about how far along they are in their pregnancy to get an ultrasound?

Twatwaffle? I'm sorry, how old are you?

"Maybe you're interested in renting or buying a fetal doppler or you know someone who has. If so, you may be unaware that FDA regulation requires you to acquire physician approval in the form of a prescription to legally rent or purchase a fetal doppler."
Wow!  I actually had no idea about this.  Not that I'd worry about the feds coming to knock down my door for it, just crazy that it actually is illegal when they are so simply acquired.

Yes, you do need a doctor's order for an ultrasound looking at medical issues. What they are doing is illegal. They can let you look, but confirming a pregnancy is not only illegal, but fucking stupid on their part. Boutiques don't carry the level of liability coverage to carry out medical care, and that is precisely what they are going to do to you.

Again - they are not CONFIRMING pregnancy. It is just to look. You must have skipped over the section where I wrote you must have proof of a first OB Appt with confirmed pregnancy before they will allow you to make an appt.

And use some common sense. If it were illegal, these places would not exist.

    No patience for stupidity today.

It is legal, depending on what state you reside in.  Connecticut, for example, has signed a law against them. I believe at this time that is the only state.

Ultrasounds done in an elective setting, are not for medical purposes.  They are for personal use only. Disclosures are given to the patients when they arrive and need  to be signed.  A copy is sent to your OB.

They do not see patients who are attempting to substitute an elective ultrasound for a medical diagnostic ultrasound.  This is why you need proof of a first OB appt, a positive pregnancy test, and proof of a future appt.

This IS in fact legal in 49 states.  Maybe you reside in Connecticut?  Again, if it were not legal, you would not be able to open and operate a business of this manner.

In the end, it is a personal decision, it is legal, and I did not lie to get an appointment.

Hope you ladies have a great Friday.

  • Early ultrasounds provided by anyone other than my OB would skeeve me out. Later into the pregnancy I see how an elective ultrasound could be fun but early on? That sounds way too sketchy. Like PP's said, what if something is wrong? I wouldn't want anyone but a medical professional breaking that news to me. Or worse being told everything looks great only to find out later that it doesn't. Unnecessary stress.
  • Wow. I was hoping I could be a part of this community of supportive mothers to be, but it looks like I'm out of patience. Have fun bullying each other. Hang in there OP, and message me of you need some real support. I'm not coming back here. Peace.

Exactly. Multiple times I asked for sources as to why posters believed it was illegal.  Not once did anyone give any sort of references.  I'm all for intelligent debating & conversation. If you're going to make a bold statement, I expect a valid reason to be given.  And, common sense would tell you that if it truly were illegal, I'm pretty sure there would not be multiple businesses operating in the field.

The only legitimate comment anyone has made, has been the poster who brought up the point of what if something is wrong?  What if I don't see a heartbeat? It's a good point, and a risk I'd have to be willing to take.  Regardless of where the ultrasound is, elective or medical based, if there is no hearbeat at 8 weeks, there isn't anything that can be done.

And I'm not sure why one of the previous posters started laying into me about elective c-sections?  These posts get out of control.

  • You can get them for personal use from multiple vendors, provided you have established prenatal care in place.  The companies providing the rentals and sales do abide by FDA regulations on which devices are available.

So yes, these are not available "OTC" as your article states.  OTC meaning you can walk into any drug store and purchase without a prescription.  However, with proof of current prenatal care, you can rent/buy.

This is the exact same thing as elective ultrasounds...although since you know so much about legalities of medical devices, I'm sure you will find some way to disregard my statement.

Maybe before you open your mouth, you should consider the possibilty of what area of practice the person you are insulting is in...
