Will he get made fun of for his name?

Morning and TGIF ladies. So we are naming our baby Chase. So full name will be Chase Hedges when it's said and school and such. Yesterday my aunt pointed out that she thought he'd get made fun of by kids for that. I don't get it... What am I missing? Kids will alway find something to tease about but I don't get it with the name? Obviously I don't want to make it any easier for him to be teased. So what do you think? Thanks!!

Re: Will he get made fun of for his name?

  • Hmm.  It's possible; in all honesty I do get a mental image of a little bog chasing a hedge.  But it's really not that bad, and it's one of those things that people probably just wouldn't think of as they got to know the kid.

  • I think Chase is a great name. A student of mine is named Chase, and he is an awesome student. Your aunt may be concerned that it sounds like he chases inanimate objects. But adults are much more mean than kids. Don't mind her.
  • I like the name a lot!!
  • Yes - kids can be really mean and obviously immature.  He'll probably get teased.
  • My sons name is Chase! And I love it and I got the comments too but mostly from older family members. I wouldn't worry :D

  • Kids will get made fun of their name no matter what it is. As long as you don't name him Penis or something rediculous it should be mild!

The only thing I can think of is that hedge is a synonym for bushes, in which case, may I say your aunt has a bit of a dirty mind? :) But like a couple others said, yes, he'll get made fun of for his name..but only because almost everyone does. My first name (made obvious by my user name here) got somehow morphed into something else..one of my friends changed the "Britt" part to "Shit," of course. :)

It didn't hurt my feelings because he was just doing the friendly kind of picking and I picked back, but I totally get being careful about picking names that won't get made too much fun of. I like Annalise for a girl, and was talking to my sister about it one day, and said something about how I didn't have a preference for whether it's spelled with one 'n' or two. Sister, being the helper that she is, pointed out that I may want to use two Ns.. Analise..it took me a minute. Anal. Ise. Anal ease. Anal eyes. So..yes...if we use that one, we'll put two Ns in it. :)

  • Def a dirty reference on your aunts part.... I wouldn't worry so much.
  • I'm in the kids will get made fun of for anything camp.  I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Kids are ruthless and make fun of anything. My stepdaughters name is Tammi after my husbands mom who died from breast cancer almost 15 years ago now, however the first time it happend the kids name was something ridiculous I can't even remember it now. I do remember thinking you are seriously making fun of Tammi with a name like that?!?

  • If not his name, his ears, his clothes, the way he walks, his hobbies--

    Don't worry about it.

  • I love the name Chase (that's our Beagle's name) I say use it. Kids will make fun regardless of the name if they are so inclined.

  • The most I can see is some kid going "Haha, get it? Chase? Hedges? Chase Hedges? Haha." At some point it will dawn on people that he has a verb and noun for names and it will be amusing but I don't think tease-worthy. And I think people will stop thinking about it after a while. I had a student named Na'Ledge... After a while, you just stop thinking about it.
  • i really like the name Chase. i think it's cool sounding name. kids will either get made fun of, or they won't. i don't think that name would be anything to worry about!

  • I had to think about it for a minute. That's a tough one. My sons name is carter and I assume he'll get 'carter the farter' at some point in his life. My name is Sam and my guy friends in high school were still able to twist my name into something ridiculous. You just never know. We love the name Harrison and would use the nn "Harry" but with a one syllable last name starting with a K and ending in N it sounded more dirty than anything. Had to throw that name out... :(
  • I think it should be fine. Kids can find anything to tease each other about. I actually have a friend who's name is Jim Shu, yea it's funny but the novelty wears off after a couple minutes and nobody cares anymore.

  • Agree with PP. My nickname rhymes with "Biz" (good luck figuring that one out) and some asshole started calling me Jizz my senior year of high school. I doubt it ever occurred to my parents when they were naming me to worry about that, but lo and behold, it happened! Don't worry about it, I like the name.

Um, my unfortunate nickname in high school was also Jizz, because it rhymed with the first syllable of my long, often shortened last name.

  • You can't chase a hedge. It doesn't even make sense.

I'm an elementary school teacher. Mean kids aren't nearly as smart/clever/witty as you'd think. They'll call your kid whatever the hell they want, and it hardly ever has anything to do with their name.

  • I don't think he will be teased any more than any other kid. Tell your fam to shutty!

Was truly the worst nickname for a teenage girl, right? I did not have a sense of humor about it. But look, OP, we survived.

  • Thanks ladies!!  This is how I felt too I just didn't want to have some epiphany moment AFTER he was born and regret it.  I admire you ladies who keep names secret, I'm too vocal for that!
  • I love the name. My 8yo nephew will be in good company.
  • If you like the name, I would not worry about it. My ds' s name is Wyatt and my mother was convinced kids would call him Wyatt Earp or Wyatt Burp. Our last name is nothing like Earp...and I sort of doubt most of the kids will even know who Wyatt Earp is.

And I never would have associated chasing hedge with chasing "bush."

  • LOVE the name Chase. I am assuming that your aunt said he'll get made fun of because the first name is a verb and the last name is a noun. I admit, it was the first thing I thought of--Chasing hedges. Whether it makes sense to chase a hedge or not, some kid will possibly something about it. But like previous posters said, it'll happen eventually with something anyway. I got made fun of for having glasses that magnified my eyes. :(

  • If you really really like the name then I say go for it but... Kids will make fun of him and adults will privately chuckle.
  • I feel like almost every name has make fun of potential.....remember, kids are mean. As long as the name isn't completely ridiculous, then baby will be fine!

    This.
  • This is about the conclusion we've come too. Kids will always find something to tease about. Thanks for the input ladies
  • If you were naming him Green Hedges, I'd say reconsider. But, Chase? It's fine, totally fine. It's a great name, one I would consider if it didn't present alliteration with our last name which we are personally avoiding.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • Not to mention, I'm 99% sure if I asked my third graders what a hedge was they would have no idea. That definitely falls into the "words I'd have to explain if we read it in a story"

Green Hedges... That made me giggle. Clearly I'm a mature adult...

    Edit- can't type
  • I love the name Chase... I babysat a boy named Chase when I was like 12 and instantly loved it.

People can make fun of anything! Who cares.

Putting a middle name helps break up the Chase Hedges :)
  • As a teacher, I disagree with what one of the posters said, that adults are meaner... Kids are actually ruthless. It has to do with their honesty. I had a Chase last year and he is the sweetest kid ever. They won't make fun of Chase, they will make fun of his first and last name combo. But it isn't as bad as you think...

  • Chase is a cute name. All kids get made fun of at some point, it's just part of life. His name may never come up when it comes to teasing.
