Our receptionist is really awful. Yesterday she was completely hateful to another coworker who is a sweet older lady. Later in the day i heard the older coworker saying it was hurtful that she always attacked her. SOO I told HR. I know, I know I should mind my own business. I am a tattle tale, a snitch, BUT I knew she wouldn't say anything and it's totally unprofessional for the receptionist to treat her like that!

That's a tricky situation.

Hopefully your HR department handles it professionally and your receptionist checks herself.

This did not have a happy ending... HR called me back into her office, and very bluntly told me that we weren't in high school and that she did not appreciate hearsay. This will be the last time I try to do anything like that again. I almost was in tears! It was awful.

@jackofthebox - so now you try to find situations that either happen TO you, so they aren't hearsay OR things that you see. HR should really have handled that better. I hope they at least call in the older lady and check on it.

Also, I would suggest that she go talk to HR. She shouldn't be treated that way. Or you could leave an anonymous nasty gram for the secretary

@jackofthebox Your HR person sucks rotten eggs. You did the right thing, without a doubt.

At my former place of employment, we used to have a really snatchy, bitch colleague. Like, over the top snatchy about every thing. Individually, most of us went to our director to express our dismay at her conduct, and eventually she was given "coaching notes" and a written reprimand. Thankfully for us, she resigned shortly thereafter.

Yikes. I am sorry you were upset, but I have to say I tend to err on the side of mindja bidness. If your co-worker was really unhappy it IS up to her (as a grown woman) to stand up for herself.

I do think your HR rep should have been more tactful though. There was no reason for her to make you feel like an ass. Sorry again!

I'm in HR and I would really prefer someone report behavior like that to me/HR dept than a supervisors. Perhaps because our managers are often useless lumps when it comes to this sort of thing. I don't want to hear about every argument ever but if someone shows a pattern of disrespectful/mean behavior- I want to know.

Huh. That is not how my corporate HR would handle something like this at all. Fingers Crossed they don't get sued, cuz if they do and you are called as a witness, they're completely fucked.

@jackofthebox I'm sorry your HR person was an irresponsible snatch about it. You definitely did the right thing. No one deserves to be treated like shit.

At the office I used to work in, our accounting/payroll person was the snatchiest, most rotten and emotionally unstable person I've ever encountered in my life. It was like a random draw everyday to see what kind of mood she was in. She was incessantly rude and over the top bitter with all of us. Im pretty sure every single one us complained about her to the higher ups...and we were all simply told "thats just how she is, just deal with it".

Because THAT'S getting the job done..thanks for nothing! So fucking frustrating when people get away with that type of behavior.

I don't think you did the right thing. Does the receptionist have a boss? Go to him/ her instead. As a manager, I would be peeved if someone went to hr on one of my folks without speaking to me first, on something like this (private matters can be sent right to hr). General bitchiness should be addressed with manager first.
