NAS IS ON MOTHERFUCKING MTV! His first album came out when I was 13. We are similar ages LD.
I think the cold truth is I don't particularly care for Nas and thus he never made any sort of impression on me. I mean, it's fine, it's not bad, there's technical skill there. But it just doesn't grab me, y'know?

  • It's fine you don't like him. Everyone won't like everything. But all that 'oh, we don't get much East coast rap in Cali' or 'oh, when I was a kid we only heard rap on MTV' is fucking nonsense. And you know it. Just be real, Fucky. Its cool.

@LuckyDad have you every heard the expression "My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard?" Thank Kelis for that. And Pharell. Probably mostly Pharell, but she sang the song. And was married to Nas.

ETA Ok, I see you made the connection. There might be hope for you. You're still dead to me though.

I feel like I really learned something about myself today. That being I view Nas's beats kind of like mushy pudding and that's why he never made an impression on me. And he was (is?) married to the woman who sang Milkshake.

    Thanks, internet!

I learned that fucky can tell if something isn't his thing without even having really listened to it.
With lyrics you often have to dig deep, but with beats you kinda just know right away.

  • I learned that when @Jack9 and I start talking about the music we grew up with, threads die out.

  • Bossy is an epic song. I remember making my brother send it to me because my dad had some program on my computer so I couldn't download music with bad words.

My BFF's dad used to scratch up any of her CDs he found that had cussing on them. I lost a few of mine by leaving them at her house. RIP Bone Thugs, Art of War.

  • I definitely had to listen to some music with headphones on. My mom was passive enough not to ask, and luckily a lot of the music I liked had sanitized radio versions she was passingly familiar with.

  • I never had to worry about that.  The worst out there in the early 80's was Ring my Bell and Little Red Corvette.

  • My parents were so bad, they let me watch Carlin standup at a very young age. By bad, I mean awesome.

  • my parents put a parental control lock on MTV that was still there when I moved out.... I mean I obviously knew the code but still.

    irrelevant but oh well

  • My parents were a bit ridiculous. I was allowed to watch movies like  Boyz N the Hood, New Jack City, and Juice (which all came around when I was around 10 or 11) but I couldn't get a CD with a Parental Advisory sticker on it until I was 13.

More parental ridiculousness: My dad bought M a fucking 50 Cent CD when she was 2, because she liked the song "In the Club". The full CD. Unedited.

  • I had no music or TV parental control, but I was pretty much grounded for like everything else.

I was grounded for stupid shit all the time, and wasn't allowed to watch MTV, The Simpsons, Roseanne, or Ricki Lake.  I didn't even try to buy music my mom might object to, just wasn't worth it.
My mom tried to set rules like these, but she always caved anytime we pushed back, or just did what we wanted anyways, so there was no grounding, just occasional passive disappointment. That and she was much stricter when we were 10-12 and loosened up a lot for HS, and did the classic thing where she was stricter with my brother and stopped caring with my baby sister.

  • I spent my entire freshman year (well, from 1st quareter interims on) grounded for grades. by 10th grade they realized it was failed tactic and I might get grounded for that weekend after grades came out at most. I did have an early curfew 10 on weekends and forget about going out on a school night unless it was for an extracurricular or school activity.

Looking to be her SIL, Mabel?
I'm pretty much always on the prowl and from what I've read I feel like I'd fit right into their family.
