So annoyed. I had my initial OB visit today, and one also scheduled for 8 weeks on 12/23. I thought for sure that when the appt was made for 12/23 they stated I would have an U/S. Apparently not.
Now I'm definitely not comfortable telling our families at Christmas.

So so bummed.

Re: No U/S today or at 8 week appt?! So much for telling our families at Christmas
I had 3 in the first tri with DS and am considered high risk due to hypertension. I was just surprised. And it wouldn't be a big deal if it weren't the holidays and wanting to tell family while they are together.

ETA: just so I am understanding you, you normally wouldn't care, but because it is around the holidays you think you deserve one?
You are all mean. Let her vent. There was nothing that was entitlement or that she deserved -
For Gods sake- its what this site is for and frankly your comments were mean and uncalled for- relax and be nice.
And the fact that you actually spent the time typing out a mean comment is sad.
Why not be nice or keep it to yourself. We are all a little nuts right now.
Baby #1 due June 5th, 2014
DH's cousin announced their 2nd pregnancy at just over 7 weeks. At a family gathering, she had her DS casually wear a "big brother" t-shirt until everyone caught on. However, they did an u/s at her 8 week appt and found she had a missed m/c.
Also, I will add that I had two back to back chemicals in August & September of this year...
That is why I am hesitant to say anything without seeing LOs heartbeat. And it would have been nice to announce to families at Christmas - otherwise it wouldn't have been a big deal.
Regardless, I did find a place that does heartbeat u/s in our area by certified ultrasound techs for $49. I have made a tentative appt, and will talk it over with DH. Thanks for the suggestion @jbrigman1!

I'm not surprised they didn't do an ultrasound. But I am surprised they didn't at least attempt a Doppler. Granted 8weeks is pretty early for it to work. Honestly if you are that worried about announcing without hearing the heartbeat, I would just not worry about announcing until later. S htel e chance of miscarriage goes down, It sucks but so does having an early ultrasound that is medically unnecessary and falsely reassuring because such early ultrasounds mean so little, having it be normal, announcing, then losing the baby and having to unannounce. Granted if you have a supportive family you may feel comfortable doing this. But if not, I would definitely hold off on announcing rather than using a non-medical service to do it. But I am just overly paranoid that given their lack of credentials, experience, and medical training they wouldn't be able to recognize an actual problem and I would get a false sense of security. Again though I am super paranoid. Good luck!
They have a hearbeat viewing ultrasound session specifically for 7-9 weeks. They are certified ultrasound technicians who opened an elective ultrasound firm. In order for me to have the appointment, I needed to show confirmation that I have had my first OB appt to prove that I am being followed by appropriate medical provider, and am not substituting this ultrasound for appointments with my OB.
So, please escort yourself out of my thread. Thanks!

"So someone lied her ass off to get an appointment at a non-medical ultrasound boutique.
I am okay with responses and opinions on my posts. I am not ok with being called a liar. Who would be dumb enough to lie about how far along they are in their pregnancy to get an ultrasound?
Twatwaffle? I'm sorry, how old are you?

These are certified ultrasound technicians. You don't need a prescription to get an ultrasound.

If you had read my entire post, I stated this is where we went with DS. I did not say this is the place we are going currently. I am still looking into the options.
Opinions I am ok with, stupidity I am not.

Again - they are not CONFIRMING pregnancy. It is just to look. You must have skipped over the section where I wrote you must have proof of a first OB Appt with confirmed pregnancy before they will allow you to make an appt.
And use some common sense. If it were illegal, these places would not exist.
No patience for stupidity today.

It is legal, depending on what state you reside in. Connecticut, for example, has signed a law against them. I believe at this time that is the only state.
Ultrasounds done in an elective setting, are not for medical purposes. They are for personal use only. Disclosures are given to the patients when they arrive and need to be signed. A copy is sent to your OB.
They do not see patients who are attempting to substitute an elective ultrasound for a medical diagnostic ultrasound. This is why you need proof of a first OB appt, a positive pregnancy test, and proof of a future appt.
This IS in fact legal in 49 states. Maybe you reside in Connecticut? Again, if it were not legal, you would not be able to open and operate a business of this manner.
In the end, it is a personal decision, it is legal, and I did not lie to get an appointment.
Hope you ladies have a great Friday.

Exactly. Multiple times I asked for sources as to why posters believed it was illegal. Not once did anyone give any sort of references. I'm all for intelligent debating & conversation. If you're going to make a bold statement, I expect a valid reason to be given. And, common sense would tell you that if it truly were illegal, I'm pretty sure there would not be multiple businesses operating in the field.
The only legitimate comment anyone has made, has been the poster who brought up the point of what if something is wrong? What if I don't see a heartbeat? It's a good point, and a risk I'd have to be willing to take. Regardless of where the ultrasound is, elective or medical based, if there is no hearbeat at 8 weeks, there isn't anything that can be done.
And I'm not sure why one of the previous posters started laying into me about elective c-sections? These posts get out of control.

This would be great if this thread was in regards to me considering purchasing a fetal doppler. However, I was not.

You can get them for personal use from multiple vendors, provided you have established prenatal care in place. The companies providing the rentals and sales do abide by FDA regulations on which devices are available.
So yes, these are not available "OTC" as your article states. OTC meaning you can walk into any drug store and purchase without a prescription. However, with proof of current prenatal care, you can rent/buy.
This is the exact same thing as elective ultrasounds...although since you know so much about legalities of medical devices, I'm sure you will find some way to disregard my statement.
Maybe before you open your mouth, you should consider the possibilty of what area of practice the person you are insulting is in...
