Propranolol for treating Hemangioma's

Any one going through this? My daughter had her first set of treatments today and I am interested in how/if her sleep patterns will change and any side effects you may have seen?

Re: Propranolol for treating Hemangioma's

  • My DD has a fairly small one on her backside. Our pedi said to monitor it, check that it doesn't grow suddenly or become hard and/or bleed. She preferred to leave it alone and said it most likely will minimize with time. But, hers is small and inconspicuous so we are not treating it. Good luck, sorry I can't offer experience.

  • I don't know about the baby but I was given Propranolol and I didn't sleep at all. I also had some hallucinations and nightmares. They gave it to me for migraines. I don't mean to frighten you. I have no clue how a baby would tolerate it but as an adult it was really scary.
  • It's a beta blocker traditionally used for blood pressure but now used to treat many other things, even migraines. It should be well tolerated. The main complaint I get from adults is fatigue when exercising... so unless LO is hitting up the gym it should be fine!

  • May I ask how they are giving it? Is it oral/liquid?

Liquid and orally. She has an hemangioma on her eye so just leaving it alone and watching it wasn't an option. They were afraid would eventually effect her vision. She doesn't seem to be having any issues at all. If anything, her sleep is better than it was before.

Hmm.  We have what they think is a hemangioma on the eyelid too.  The eye specialists disagree about what it is--one says it's more like a cyst.  We're meeting with "plastics" in a couple weeks for another opinion.  They said it would probably not affect vision, so we'd either wait, which could take 10 years, for it to go away, or if it isn't a hemangioma, they would remove it somehow.  My friend's baby had one that was very much affect vision and he had to go across the country to see a specialist to get it removed and it was a big ordeal.

  • Rachael, do you have an update on how the treatment was tolerated?  How everything went?  We just found that our sons has a scrotal hemangioma.  Our ped. recommended we see a pediatric derm, which we are seeing soon.  Any suggestions or advice?  I am not sure what the outcome will be with treatment but I do know that my ped. is recommending treatment.
