Anyone insert EPO? (TMI)

Anyone insert evening primrose oil vaginally? I tried for the first time last night. I popped a hole in the capsule last night and tried squeezing it up as close to my cervix as possible. Most of it came right back out and I didn't notice any coming out when I got up to pee during the night. Now this morning I have huge greenish globs coming out. Does EPO have a color to it? I'm assuming it's mucus plug and not EPO.

Re: Anyone insert EPO? (TMI)

  • No, I have never had anything greenish come out, the EPO is just clear and looks oily in the toilet usually. I don't poke holes in mine. I just insert them when I go to bed the gel cap will absorb. Really no need to poke holes and squeeze them in(too much extra work!), just shove them up there.  I would guess that is your mucus plug, does it look like snot like chunks?

  • Yeah that's what I thought. It does look like snot. I thought I lost it at the doctor's office on Monday but I guess there was more in there.

I didn't know if the gel cap would absorb in there which is why I squeezed out the oil. It just made a big mess so I don't even know how much stayed in there. I'll try inserting the whole thing tonight. Thanks for replying.

  • The plug can grow back too and then more will come out. Last pregnancy I thought I had lost all of mine and then a huge, gross chunk come out a couple of days later. Gross. I would suspect you got some up there and it helped the rest of your plug come out!

  • The EPO has no color to it and is oily.  I do puncture with a needle prior to insertion but I don't squeeze it.  I wear a pantyliner or pad to catch any leakage.  Greenish mucousy globs is not the EPO.
  • So I'm gonna thread jack here. I'm a TTM but I've never used EPO. My MW is very holistic but she hadn't recommended it or anything actually to help things along. From what I've gathered from Google it seems that EPO assists in ripening the cervix. Any side effects? I'm already drinking the RRL tea (have done that with the last 2 pregnancies) but I'm getting antsy. 40 weeks tomorrow.

  • I haven't noticed any side effects, just an oily vag. There are some articles that do link it to premature membrane rupture.

  • @mavgirl I researched on the internet but asked my dr before I did anything. She actually was really pro EPO (she is not particularally holistic or anything either). She said she even recommends it to patients who have breast issues because it is known to help with soreness and other breast issues.

I started with 1000mg once a day at 36 weeks and then at 38 weeks she said I could go to 2000mg per day. She didn't mention inserting the capsule but I had read it was more effective that way. Being that she said EPO was harmless and I'm getting desperate I decided to go that route. Now granted I don't know how much stayed in there since I broke the capsule the amount of mucus plug that came out today was impressive (sorry for TMI). Hoping for some action today.

  • I did... it didn't really seem to make any difference in my cervix from my last  OB appt (when I started using it) to when I delivered a week later.

Thanks ladies. I'm gonna ask the MW today as I have to call to set up another appointment because we didn't schedule one for next week as she was "confident" I'd go into labor before our last appt (Tuesday which she cx due to a labor). Thanks :)

  • How is everyone inserting the epo? I took a tamp on out of a applicator placed the gel pill in the applicator and launched it up there! Not sure if I got it far enough though...

Lol, I just use my fingers. My Dr can get up there with his hand, so can I!

  • If you didn't get all the way up into the cervix then it was probably the pill that didn't dissolve. Ive had some of mine fall out and it looks just like the plug. My pills are yellowish, but the oil inside is clear.

I have some seriously long fingernails that need attending to. I tried to just feel first but it was too painful with my long daggers...

  • I am so happy I found this thread.  I just posted asking how much to take!  I hope it works.
  • I think it only works if you start it at 36 weeks but it couldn't hurt to try I guess! Someone I know has been taking it orally and vaginally since 36 weeks along with drinking rasberry leaf tea like crazy and her due date was yesterday. Some babies are just comfy!

You can start at 36 weeks because RRL and EPO do not induce labor.  RRL is supposed to tone your uterus to better handle contractions and EPO is supposed to soften your cervix to help aid in dilation.  They only "work" when your body is ready to labor.

When pregnant with DS1 I drank RRL and took EPO orally and vaginally from 37 weeks.  I did not go into labor until 40w2d pregnant.  I have been drinking RRL since second tri and taking EPO orally and vaginally since 36 weeks.
