The name Emi ?

What do people think of the name Emi for a girl? It is Japanese for "blessed, beautiful". I am not Japanese and neither is my fiancé but I just think it's unique and pretty.

Re: The name Emi ?

  • That is true I did think of that also. I haven't come across any Emme's or Emi's yet though.

  • I can't vote. It's not the fact that I don't like the name, it's that it's Japanese and you aren't. My husband is half Japanese and was born in Japan and our baby boy is the whitest 1/4 Japanese baby ever! I think it would be silly to have a name from a culture that you have no affiliation with but I can't say that for EVERY culture especially the ones that have become so mainstream in the American culture that some people wouldn't notice the difference. I know, it's a double standard and it's probably just me. We thought about a Japanese name for baby #2 to honor DH's culture, but when you look at our offspring and they look nothing like his daddy, I would expect the side eye especially from the Asian community.

  • Emilia is in the running for our baby and Emi would be the NN.  Didn't know it had a meaning!

  • Ok as a nickname for Emily, but otherwise, don't like it.

With the popularity of Em- names (Emma, Emmeline, Emily, Emme, etc), I think Emi will just be another of the bunch.  Many of those Em- girls are also called Emmy and so we're just back to the same old name with a different spelling.

This. Very much this. Regardless of origin or spelling, all I could think as I read the OP was please, please, no more Emmy's!!!
