Zantac Moms

So DS has been on liquid Zantac since he was 3 weeks for reflux.  He gets .75mL twice a day.  For the first few weeks, it worked great.  Lately it seems as if this dosage isn't really cutting it…he spits up yellow bile (from his mouth and nose) and seems to be somewhat uncomfortable after it happens; he is also pulling when he nurses again.

My question is, how often is your LO's dosage changed?  What I understood from his pedi is that it is gauged by weight (which would make sense as to why it doesn't seem to be as effective again).  He has his 2 month well-visit next week, but I'm not sure if I should have him go in before then to deal with this?  Thanks!

When it seems my LO is showing signs of reflux again, I call the pedi. They bring him in for a weight check and dosage change which the nurse does. We had to change doses 3 times since he was 3 weeks. He is now 8 weeks and 11pounds. His dose is 1.6 ml twice daily based on weight. My LO has so much pain when the dosage needs to be increased so I would vote to call! edit: his concentration is 15 mg per milliliter

  • We just started Zantac 2 days ago. LO is 9 weeks and 11lbs 12oz and she gets 1ml twice a day.
Our biggest problem is her crying so much...how long does it take for the meds to make a difference?

My baby's reflux got better and better each day for about a week. By the end of that week she was a different baby! So happy, content and sweet!
    thanks!

  • My LO only was recommended. Dosage of .3 to .5!! Ahhhh! It helped at first and now I think it is too low as the symptoms creep back sometimes. He is now probably around 11 lbs... We go to pedi tomorrow for 2 month shots so we will deft be discussing this!
  • There are different concentrations of this drug, so just because someone else's baby is on more or less doesn't mean it's the same dose.  To answer your question, though, as baby grows, so should the dose (though a change of 1-2 lbs is probably needed before I'd imagine there'd be much change since at this point that's only about 10-20% of body weight).  But even if the weight hasn't changed much, there is a pretty wide dose range, so if the dose is not effective any longer, a larger dose may be prescribed.
