Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

running out of milk options...

HI there.  My 18mnth old daughter was exclusively breastfeed to a year ( and still does once a day) and we have struggled to find a milk option that has worked.  cows milk made her stink like sour milk and have loose stools with horrible diaper rash.  wasn't crazy about rice milk (which she did for a few months) so we switched to almond milk.  She LOVED it for a few months.  Now, she still loves is but is starting to get a rash on her face.  When I cut back on the amount of almond milk, the rash goes away.  I'm thinking my only other options are coconut milk, lactaid cows milk, or something I have not thought of (no soy milk).  I should probably mention that neither my husband and I can deal with cows milk but can do cheese and yogurt, like my daughter.  I am at a loss and would love to hear if anyone has been through this and what their thoughts, opinions, and suggestions are.

Re: running out of milk options...

  • Although my DD didn't have reactions to cow's milk, she did decide at around 19 months she no longer wanted to drink it.  It's not ideal because it is an easy way to get calcium and vitamin D into her, but I just make sure she gets what she needs in other ways--varied foods and a vitamin supplement.  Flintstones just started making a bone support supplement that comes in gummie form.  It's like a fruit snack to DD, but it specifically targets calcium and vitamin D to help make up for the loss of milk.  She gets one of those every other day and opposite days just a regular gummie vitamin.  Like previous people have said, milk isn't an absolute requirement.

  • That was what I was thinking too but I know that many wouldn't understand my position of no milk for a baby!!  Thanks...
  • My DD drinks only water, and she is perfectly healthy.  She doesn't even eat dairy products.  She eats a wide variety of nutritious foods.

  • I would try goats milk just to see, if I were you, but then not worry about it and just make sure her diet is good if that didn't work out.

Since straight almond milk was giving her a rash, there is a coconut/almond milk. Babies' systems take awhile to adjust to cows milk, so you could try again and give small amounts at a time and increase it every few days or every few weeks.
  • I have had great success with goats milk. We tried a BM/cow combo but she wasn't digesting the cows milk well and I was pumping 4 times a day only getting less than 3 oz. total. The goats milk we started with 4 oz and 1 oz cows milk. We are now 3/2 goat/cow. It's been working great for my DD.
  • A lot of toddlers in Asian countries don't drink cow's milk, they get their calcium and vitamin D from the rest of their diet (dark green leafy veggies, fish bones, etc.). If you give your DD a good diet there's no reason to feel bad or worry that she's not drinking milk.
  • We are not doing milk because LO refuses to drink cow's milk and almond milk, and I don't really feel like buying a bunch of others just to try. He's still nursing 4x a day, and eats cheese and yogurt, so I'm not stressing about it.
