Where will your baby sleep?

I'm thinking a bassinet at the foot of my bed. I have a guest room, but it's full of furniture I don't want to move. I'd love to maintain my own bedroom and the baby in hers, but that seems kinda far away too. Idk... Maybe I'll move her after she's a few months old. Where is your baby going when you get home from the hospital?

Re: Where will your baby sleep?

  • Hmm Dh and I were just talking about this. We have a room in the house that is for our LO. But I think the first couple of weeks The baby will sleep in our room.

  • We're turning my craft room into V2s room... it's the smaller bedroom but next to ours so I (maybe) won't be as grumpy in the middle of the night.  ;)  We've already planned out how to decorate (just waiting for 5 months so we know the colors)!!  :):)
  • Baby will be in our room for a while, unless we move to a 3 bed before baby comes. DD sleeps so well I'd like to keep her room just her. We moved her to her nursery at 6 weeks, but this one will have to stay with us until we move to a bigger place.

  • We'll have a bassinet by the bed for the first few months. More than likely we'll be co-sleeping/bedsharing after that.

We have dormer rooms upstairs, so we might make a little nursery nook in our bedroom for a crib, changing table and my rocking chair.

We have a 3rd bedroom but it's downstairs, so unless DD wants to move down there, it'll stay as is.

  • We did the RNP for the first 4 months of DD's life and will NOT be using it for nighttime sleeping again. She slept great in it but when it came time to transition to the crib I was cursing it. The RNP provides a reclined and cuddly position for baby to sleep in, which sounds great but it is pretty much the opposite of a crib so the transition was very difficult for us. I ended up buying a co-sleeper to help transition DD and plan to use if for the first few months for baby #2. We still take the RNP out for naps for DD when she's sick because of the recline. I'll probably use the RNP downstairs for naps during the day still.

In a crib, in his/her room for starters. That is what we did with DS and it worked beautifully, never had any problems. I am a very light sleeper so no way I would consider a baby sleeping in my room...they can be noisy in their sleep! Edited for typo.

  • We went to the crib at 3 weeks because she just didn't sleep well in a bassinet. Usually I had to prop her up on the boppy and put her to bed with me. I intend to get a RNP this time.

  • My dad is building us a cradle, so we'll have that next to our bed for the first few weeks (or next to the couch, whatever makes most sense), and then we'll transition into the nursery, which is currently our office, right across the hall from our room.  The office is moving into what used to be my sewing room.

  • DD slept in a pnp, in the bassinet option until she was roughly 3 months old. At that point we moved her to the crib in her room.

  • I'm thinking a bassinet in our room at first then transition to their own room. I already have a color scheme in mind! Haven't figured out day time. What so you ladies recommend?
  • edited December 2013
Ideally, in the Rock n Play or Pack n Play in our room the first few weeks. DS only slept being held for 4 months so I'll be thrilled if this baby lets me put him/her down once in awhile to sleep.
  • DD had such bad acid reflux she would only sleep in her swing or with me propped up on the couch. I am soooo hoping we don't have a colicky-refluxy baby again. I was so against anything but a crib because I didn't want to have to worry about transitioning later. Silly me.

When they are newborn, I say do whatever freaking works so the household can maintain some sort of sanity. But I will try the crib again or maybe a bassinet if this one will cooperate!
  • DH is very opposed to the idea of bed sharing, and I'm not even sure he wants the baby in our room.

I was thinking a RNP or bassinet at first in our room.

The baby will also have its own room with a crib.

  • Straight into his/her crib in his/her bedroom. I know me and I know I won't be able to sleep with a baby in my room.

  • As far as daytime naps last time around we just used the pack n play on the first floor, since the bedrooms are upstairs, for those first weeks. Will do that again this time (unless it somehow doesn't work).

  • In a RNP by the bed like DS.  It worked great for us especially since he had reflux.  He slept in it exclusively until about 5 ish months when we transferred him to his crib in our room.  Then he started in the crib, moved to the RNP, then eventually into bed with us for part of the night.  We moved his crib to his room around 6 months, but did the same routine until about 9 months until he was just in his crib in his room.  Honestly, I liked having him near me all night.  We will see how it goes with this one.  My DH and I disagree about what room to make the new babies room anyway.  He wants to use the guest room, and I want to use the study.

  • Eventually we'll move DS to a new room and the baby will just move into the nursery. DS will be about 20 months, so I don't know if he'll be ready to transition to a bed yet. We had about a month where he slept in the RnP and I slept on the couch in the living room because we were up so much. Ideally, we'll do the bassinet in our bedroom for this baby, so I can sleep in a bed, but not get up as much. This could buy us a few more months for DS to graduate into a bed.

  • WIth DD she went straight to her nursery in her crib. This one, I don't know. I might keep him/her in a RNP in our room, but most likely will be sleeping in his/her own room from the get-go.

  • We had DD in our room until 6 months and then she moved to her nursery. We started her in a bassinet but she had reflux so then we moved her to a RNP. I will start this baby in a bassinet and hopefully he/she doesn't have reflux, as PP stated it was a pain to transition her from the RNP to the crib!

  • Probably the pnp bassinet for awhile in our room. DD slept in it for about 6 months before we transitioned her to a crib in her room. It worked well for us, but who knows what will work best this time around. I'm open to whatever works to try to maximize sleep for everyone :)

  • I imagine that the baby will probably be in a RNP or a bassinet/pack-n-play for at least a couple of weeks. After that it all depends on when we move and how much space we might have. If we stay where we are then the crib would go in our room as we only have one bedroom, if we move then crib in it's own room.

When I transitioned DS, I put my old college text books under his crib mattress on one of the ends.  It mimicked the incline of the RNP.  Once he got used to sleeping in the crib, I took the books away.  He had the books under his mattress for maybe 2 weeks.

That was actually suggested to me by his pediatrician to help alleviate his cold.  It worked like a charm to transition him.

We did this too, but with a towel rolled up under one end and slowly unrolled the towel. It was still a pain to get her used to it, it took us probably 2 months before she was finally ok on a flat surface.

  • This LO will bed share for the first few months.  Once it gets too wiggly to bed share, it will sleep in a crib in our room (our room is huge).  Once it is no longer nursing in the middle of the night, it will share a room with DD.

We are going to do a bassinet by my side of the bed for the first few months and then transition to the nursery across the hall from us. We have a spare bedroom upstairs and a play room upstairs but I'd rather all of us be on the same level for now. I can't wait to start making the room a nursery!!! :) A few more months!!

Ideally, baby #2 will sleep in our room in a bassinette for the first few months and move to his/her crib in his/her room.

  • It depends on how this LO sleeps. If they are a good sleeper then directly to the crib in DS's room, if their not a good sleeper then we will set up the pnp in our room and use the bassinet option.

  • Our LO will be in their own crib in their own room. We did this for our DS and it was great. Yes, it was a pain in the middle of the night when I had to get up and nurse but he never had a problem sleeping.

  • Rock n' Play and Pack n' Play next to my bed for the first few months and then we'll transition the baby to their own room/crib. It worked great with our son and we did sleep training between 5-6 months and he's been STTN since.

  • I'm still trying to figure out if we'll start this LO in our room and move to their room when their older or if we'll just go straight to being in their own nursery. We will be moving around the rooms. DD will move to what is currently the guest room since it's bigger and her current room will remain a nursery but with a facelift for the new LO. Last time around, DD slept in the bassinet portion of a pack n play in our room/ in her swing until about 6 months when we moved her to her crib but I think we may skip that if we can this time around.

  • In a PnP in our room for a few months and then we'll probably co sleep until 1 yr old but have naps in the crib in the nursery.
  • I'm buying a new RNP. They make them without inclines now. That was a hard thing to fix when we transitioned to a crib! But, they are pretty awesome, and a LOT cheaper than an arms reach co-sleeper. Baby will sleep in that until they aren't waking up so much. DS slept so much better when he was in his own room.
  • The baby will sleep in our room until 6+ months. We are in a 2 bedroom right now and I'm not sure if/when we will be moving and I don't necessarily want to put the baby and DD together right away. I don't want the baby to disturb DDs sleep.
  • I thought my DD would sleep in my room for a few weeks in a bassinet but she was SO noisy and grunty I literally moved her to her crib the first night. Her room is right next to mine so it was close enough for me to feel comfortable, but far enough I couldn't hear all the squeaks ;) I imagine this baby will probably be the same case, but I'm contemplating using a rock n play this time...
