Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Lots and lots of poopy diapers

The last few days, our LO (3.5 months) has had nearly all of her diapers poopy, like 6-7 a day.  There's not much, and it's fairly runny.  She is formula fed.  We haven't changed anything with her eating habits.  She doesn't seem to be any more fussy.  Suggestions?  It's getting old going through so many poopy diapers and also her bottom is getting raw because of it.  We've been slathering on lots of diaper cream.

Re: Lots and lots of poopy diapers

  • We have many many poopy diapers a day and always have. Though we get occasional days of 2-3 poopy diapers. LO is EBF. I don't think there's anything you can do to "change" their number of poops. Some babies poop often. Some don't. We use aquaphor after each change and it has prevented diaper rash.

  • Since it's only been happening the past few days and hasn't been typical, I would call your pedi and see what they say. Especially since it's 6-7 times a day, there is a chance your LO could get dehydrated,  Have you checked her temperature?
  • Yes, her temp is normal... I am calling the peds office in a little bit.  Thanks!

  • Called Peds. They said it could be a stomach virus, but basically to use diaper cream constantly, make sure her bum is dry before applying it, perhaps use a warm compress or washcloth to wipe her instead of normal wipes, and give an ounce of pedialyte between feedings to help with dehydration.  But basically to give them a call in 7-10 days if it hasn't cleared up by then.  Hopefully it will!

  • Hopefully your LO is feeling better soon. Glad it's nothing too serious!!
  • It's been a week now.  DH actually took her in on Tuesday because her bum was so bad.  They suggested putting her on her tummy as much as possible without a diap so she could air out.  Between airing out and her tummy problems being resolved she started improving on Thursday and by Sunday the redness was completely gone.  I have never been so thankful for only 2-3 stinky diaps a day!
