Name dilemma - Maeve?

I love the spelling of the name Maeve, but I want to pronounce it May+vee rather than Mave. What do you all think?

  • If you want to call her Maeve, why not just name her Maeve (w/ te correct pronunciation) and call her Maevey/Maevy/Maevie as a nickname?
    This.

  • No. Really, just no.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • Definitely don't change the pronunciation of the spelling Maeve but you can use a NN to use Maevie.
  • Maeve is such a beautiful name as is. I would pronounce it correctly, and as pp said, you can call her maeve-y as a nick name.

  • What they said. Lifetime of headaches and side eyes to change the pronunciation of a name just because you like it better. And to make up a name to give it the phonetic sound you want will get side eyes from name purists, which do exist outside this board too.

As PPs said, name her Maeve and NN her Maevie, or start fresh with a new name. This Maeve, NN Maevie route will also be better to give her Maeve to fall back on if she grows up to be like those like me who think names that end in the y or ie sound can feel too cutesy

Awful. The name is pronounced /MAVE/. I would pronounce it correctly.

it would be like you going around pronouncing twelve "twel-vee."
This. You would be embarrassing yourself.

I agree with MJ's suggestion to name her Maeve and use Maevie as a nickname.

  • Agreeing that Maisy, Macy, or even Daisy as well as a bunch of other names have that two-syllable ending in an -ee sound that you seem to want. And using Maevie as a nn is something that will probably come naturally.

  • Agree with PP. Maeve is a beautiful name and just call her Mayvie as a nickname.

  • My name is pronounced different than the spelling and it has been a lifetime of correcting people pronouncing it wrong. It is very frustrating for me and my Mom. Please consider changing the spelling to how you want it pronounced. Perhaps Mayvey?

    Oh dear god. @-)

  • If you named your daughter Maeve, but insisted it was pronounced Mayvie and not MAVE, I would think you were really dumb.

If you don't like the actual pronunciation of Maeve, then the only solution is to pick a name which you like visually and audibly.

You can't just change the pronunciation because YOU like it better. I would seriously side eye someone when genuinely thinks they are pronouncing their child's name correctly if they pronounced Maeve as May-vee.
This. What a pretty name to mess with... You could use the name Mae and use NN May-vee

  • I never understand the desire to say may-ve. How do you say pave? Wave? Having said that, our daughter is Maeve and we call her Maevey all the time.
  • Why would you do that to a person? It's just mean.
