Rec your umbrella stroller

edited December 2013 in May 2014 Moms
Anyone got an umbrella stroller you like? I've been baby wearing DD until now but she's getting heavy (12months old, 23lbs) on long walks and I need to be able to take her with me to my doctors appointments so I think it's time for a stroller. I'm planning on babywearing LO2 for most of the first year and my neighbors who have a 6 and 4 year old offered to give us their double stroller. So I really just need something to take DD around the city for about 1-2years, probably just an umbrella stroller. I live on a 3rd floor condo, so I need to be able to carry DD in one hand and the stroller in the other going up and down the stairs, and I need to be able to fold/unfold it with one hand. I tried to go look at umbrella strollers in a couple stores around here but they only had the Uppababy G-luxe in stock, which I found very hard to fold/unfold, and definitely can't do it one-handed. I still have to go check out BRU. I was looking at the bumbleride flite online, but it's way more than I want to spend. The Jeep Cherokee sport looks like it has a lot of features I need but is huge. Any other ideas?

I have the MacLaren Triumph and the City Mini. For sidewalk and more 'rigorous' terrain I go with the city mini. Has an awesome umbrella. It's easy to fold but a bit heavy. The MacLaren is more of my mall stroller. It's super easy to fold up too and durable. I received it as a gift...not sure I would want to spend the money. The shade for the MacLaren isn't great. My son likes to pull the entire umbrella over his head sometimes, which you can do if it's raining- but it looks like he's trying to suffocate himself. I'm able to pull it up with one hand, although you need a foot to step on a latch as well.

  • I love my Maclaren.  Easy to fold and lightweight.  Also some models are pretty cheap money.

  • We have the Chicco umbrella stroller.  It's really easy to work one (or no) handed.  I wasn't interested in spending a lot on a uppababy or maclaren since I knew we were going to have another baby soon and I'd want a double instead.

I have the MacLaren Volo stroller and I really like it. DS likes it too. ETA: I hit reply too soon before I was done. It's really light weight and is easily carried over your shoulder.

  • We have the britax b-nimble and it's awesome! We kept breaking the cheap ones and finally just spent more on this one, and it was worth the money!

  • $30 from BRU, can open and close it with just my feet, even in flip flops! Lol
  • I have the cheapie from BRU. My only complaint is that it is pretty short so it is awkward for me and Dh to push it comfortably, and we're not terribly tall- 5'7" and 5'10". I still use it everywhere, but definitely test drive anything you're looking at.

  • I got a Maclaren Triumph off Craigslist. It's worked really well for us, & I saved a ton. It's easy to fold one handed & relatively light. FYI: the newer models have a much better sunshade. Mine is way too small to do much good, but we make do. I really wanted a City Mini, but they went for about twice as much as the Maclarens - close to retail price.
I had the same problem as Miles2Go with the cheap umbrella stroller my parents use. I hate hate hate pushing it because it's too short for me. Maclaren is great for that.

I have loved our Ignite. By First Years, i think.

I can open and close it one-handed on the jetway with my two year old trying to wriggle out of my other arm. You know, not that that happens with toddlers. Ever.

  • We have this Jeep all-terrain sport umbrella stroller. It is awesome.  One hand fold - handles great in sand, grass, etc. It's been everywhere from the Caribbean to the streets of NYC with us.  LOVE it.

  • LOVE my Maclaren.  More expensive than others, but worth it, IMO.

  • Got the cheap one from Target four years ago.  It's still going strong.  It's been everywhere from sidewalks to dirt trails to the mountains.

  • We've used the Chicco liteway since birth. It's the only stroller we have. It lays flat for newborns, too. The new Liteway Plus ones allow you to use the Chicco carseat with it as well.

  • Thanks for the all the recs. I love the city mini but it is too wide to fit through my front door, so are a few of the other suggestions. I'm going to BRU and target tonight to test the Chicco liteway, Chicco echo, britax b nimble and maclarens. Although I've read a bunch of reviews saying the maclarens don't do too good on bumpy sidewalks and we have brick /pavestone sidewalks around here so those might be out.
