One & Done: Only child

Daycare just got cheaper!

We're doing a little happy dance in my house.  DS just turned two, so our daycare bill for this week was "only" $198.  We had been paying $242/wk since he started at 3 months old.

Neither DH or I can imagine starting that expense over again with another LO.  At least with one, we can manage the expense and always see the light at the end of the tunnel.  Having an extra $160 a month will nice!

What are your childcare arrangements and expenses?

Re: Daycare just got cheaper!

  • We have ds at a day care center. It doesn't get cheaper as he gets older but is on our way to work, offer full day kindergarten, and we love having him there. He asks if he can go play with his friends on the weekends and sometimes doesn't want to leave when I pick him up. That being said, day care costs are one of the huge decision makers in being OAD. I have been teaching for ten years and I know I would never be rehired at my step if I toon a few years off.

  • When DS started full time at school in Grade 1 it was like having a mortgage paid off!  Huge savings as after school care is only $60/week versus the $200/week for day care.  Also he goes to a karate program so we don't have to pay for lessons separately.  Great Childcare option.

I also can' t imagine going back to that cost with a second LO.

  • DH and I work opposite shifts so we don't pay for anything. (We also don't see each other and we're each always flying solo with LO. But there's certainly no issue of DH pulling his weight.)

We worry about his socialization, however. There aren't playgroup options or things like Gymboree out here.

  • That's great! Ours dropped a little but hardly enough to notice when he moved to the young toddler room but I'm hoping for a bit more of a cut when he moves up again. I love this time and I don't want to rush growing up but I'm also looking forward to not paying for daycare. I feel like we'll be rich!

  • That's great!  I'm a SAHM so no "child care" expenses but DD is in full day Pre-School 3 day a week.  It's $385 per month so once she goes to kinder it will be like us getting a raise unless we send her to private school.

  • We have a caregiver for LO three days a week. She is $25 a day, and she's awesome. She does it for the extra spending money so the price is not her primary focus which is nice.

  • DD is in an in-home daycare three days a week and it is $216/week.  Totally cleaning out all of our money.

In March, I am going to apply to get her in the preschool in my building and it will be $250/week for all five days.

We were a healthy middle class prior to paying for daycare and now we have hardly any extra money!  One other reason we can't have another.

  • Love this. When DD moved to the two year old room, we went down to $295 (from $325 in the toddler room). Seriously a huge bump to our budget.

An extra $1,560 in my pocket this year? Yes, please.

  • Recently switched to a new center and our bill went up $40/wk! So worth it, though. His comprehension has improved 10 fold in that time. I have a lot more confidence in his teachers and when I picked him up on Friday he ran around showing me all his toys. He was so happy! :)

Price won't go down until he moves to the next room, which is a good 12-18 months away. He JUST moved into this room last week.
  • I don't go back to work for another few months, but I've enrolled DS in full time daycare which will cost us 315 per week. When he hits toddler age, his price will drop and we'll also consider our options then since there are day cares that won't talk them until they are toddlers.
