3D/4D scans worth it for plus size mums?

So I'm a UK size 24/26 and am currently 19 weeks pregnant. We were really disappointed with our 12 week scan because it was so fuzzy and you could just about see the outline of the baby and not much else. I presume this was because of my BMI and the ultrasound report mentioned "maternal adiposity."

Anyway we have our 20 week scan on Friday and I'm worried that they won't be able to see enough detail to check all the anatomy and we still won't get a good picture if the baby that we aren't embarrassed to show people! Lol!

Thinking about booking a 3D/4D scan for a months time or so. Anyone know if these scans might be clearer than normal scans or will it be a waste of money because it will be just as fuzzy?

  • Did you have a transvaginal u/s? I am a size 16 and found that to be clearer. However at 20 weeks we could see our baby boy with out a problem. Good luck. I hope it was clearer!

  • Hey I'm from May 14 but I'm early in May so I lurk. I am your size and I got some awesome advice from an ultrasound tech on improving  your pictures. She said that to improve picture quality I should start drinking 100oz of water a day four days before the ultrasound and avoid salty food. it was great, really improved my ultrasound picture

  • I had a private scan at 8 weeks which was transvaginal and seemed good but the baby was only a kidney bean back then. At the NHS 12 week scan the technician only did an transabdominal scan because she said she could see everything she needed to in order to get the dating and Downs test done. But the pics were well fuzzy and hard to make out. I SO hope next weeks 20 week scan is better quality because the baby will be so much bigger. Will deffo try the water and salt trick so thanks for that.
  • At my 19w A/S they were able to determine the gender (girl) and get all the data they need to assure babies health but my pictures are grainy at best.  My baby was not happy to show her face so I don't know how much was my weight and how much was an uncooperative baby.  I have looked into a elective 3D/4D scan for better pictures and was recommended to wait to 30-32 weeks for the best pictures in a plus size mommy.

  • If you're looking at doing an elective scan, you could always call and ask them.  We did a scan at BabyBond and they were really nice and helpful.  Most of the techs also work with the NHS and moonlight at BabyBond to make more money, so they're very experienced.

  • We had one at 16 weeks and Im probably about your size. They advised to drink as much water as possible the week before and we got a great 3D pic and they could clearly determine in 2D that he is a boy! We felt it was so worth it and I am hoping to do one later in third tri.

  • Im a size 16 and we didn't get great pics of baby - she simply wouldn't get into the right position!!! (very stubborn already!) Our profile pic just doesn't look like a profile!

Yes size can effect the quality somewhat, but not necessarily that much. I agree with advice above, if you are concerned call the the sonography place and ask them, they are the experts!
