Rolling Over

Hi everyone, my LO is 15 weeks (Born August 13th at 36W4D) and I am normally on Sept '13 but I feel out of place there since my baby is a bit older than all of them.

But anyways, I am a bit concerned than she is not rolling over yet. She refuses tummy time usually and rarely attempts rolling over. She will throw her legs up in the air and kind of rolls but that's it. Is it bad she isn't rolling over yet or should I be concerned and talk to my pedi about it? I am a FTM so I really don't know, I just seen people on Sept '13 talking about how their LO's are doing it at 8 weeks and all of that.

Lastly any advise on how to help her roll over on her own? Thanks in advance

  • LO is 13 weeks and she isn't rolling yet. When she's on her tummy she will try to roll her bottom half over but she doesn't roll completely yet. I think babies just do things at different rates.

  • I think it's fine that your LO isn't rolling yet, but I saw this game on the Fisher Price website, my son likes it and after I started playing it with him, he started trying to roll over on his own. (He's 3 months) https://www.fisher-price.com/en_US/playtime/joyoflearning/jolage2months.html#!/activities/tcm:169-12373

  • LO just started consistently rolling over at 4 months and 1 day. I wouldn't be concerned. Every child develops differently.

My LO is also 15 weeks (born 8/14) and isn't rolling over yet. I was just reading about it today because I was wondering when she should start doing it. Baby Center says:

"Your baby may be able to kick himself over, from his tummy to his back, as early as age 4 months. It may take him until he's about 5 or 6 months to flip from back to front, though, because he needs stronger neck and arm muscles for that maneuver."

    It goes on to say:

"If your baby hasn't figured out how to flip one way or the other by the time he's about 6 months old, and hasn't moved on to sit and try to scoot and crawl instead, bring it up the next time you talk to his doctor. Babies develop skills differently, some more quickly than others – and some babies never really take to rolling over. Keep in mind that premature babies may reach this and other milestones later than their peers."

  • 15 weeks here. She has rolled a few times by accident.

  • My son didn't roll until 6 months. DD is almost 14 weeks, not even an attempt to yet. Our doc was never concerned about DS, he was still walking by 10 months.

My LO is 15 weeks today and started consistently rolling over last week (14 weeks-rolling over at least twice a day). I don't think you should be concerned as every baby reaches milestones at different times.

  • Born August 5 and barely just started rolling over. Only if I place him just so so that his arms are under him to make it easy. Don't worry I have heard 4/5 mo is normal

I was wondering since she was technically "premature" at 36 weeks if that could cause her to reach milestones a little later.

But thank you ladies for your imput, you made me feel a lot better

  • My first son rolled over around 4 months. LO was born 8/24 and no rolling here!
     DS1 8/2011. DS2 8/2013.

  • My 4 month old has only rolled over 3 times. She does the half-roll a lot. I don't think it's cause for concern.

  • Mine has been consistantly rolling over since 8 weeks, but (and I've said it before) she's a freak of nature.
All babies develop differently though, yours may learn to talk faster than others while others are crawling first. They're all unique :)

  • My LO just rolled over today for the first time. Don't be worried, babies will hit the milestones when they are ready.

Mine was born July 31 and she doesn't roll yet. I'm just enjoying the fact she stays where I put her.

Keep in mind that no one goes to high school needing to be rocked to sleep, unpotty trained or unable to roll back to front or front to back. It will all happen. Kids are just different.

This. This is my new mantra. You don't see an adult walking around swaddled with a pacifier. They all figure it out.

I mentioned to my doctor that my LO had not rolled yet. He said before they would use that milestone as a way to judge if something was wrong. Now they recognize that different personalities and body types result in babies reaching these milestones at such different times, so it is not yet a red flag.

  • 12 weeks, and he rolls occasionally but doesn't do it consistently. I suspect he just has a body conducive to rolling though, since he accidentally flipped himself at 1 week. I wouldn't worry at this point, I think not rolling for a few more months is fairly normal.
  • Mine are 5mo actual, 3.5mo adjusted (I lost track of weeks a while ago) and are not rolling yet. They want it, but aren't coordinated enough yet.

My oldest didnt roll for a long time, like well after he sat unassisted (which he did at 5 mo). He was a chunker and it took a lot of effort to move all those rolls around ;)

The twins are peanuts and preemies, so I know they'll do things at their own pace.

  • DS will be 17 weeks tomorrow and hasn't rolled over yet. DD did it really early, but she also did a lot more tummy time than DS does.

My middle daughter didn't roll until 10 months. She sat up unassisted at 6 months but wasn't interested in anything else. She crawled at one and walked 2 months later. My first was totally different. Rolled at 4 months crawled at 5 walked at 10 months. They are both perfectly healthy just followed different development patterns

I wouldn't worry about it right now

  • My LO is 16 weeks and started rolling on the 22nd. He can roll back to belly, a dew days ago he rolled belly to back as well but it seemed like a fluke.

I am sure your LO will be rolling before you know it. :)

I think with certain things, even that amount of time can make a difference. LO was born only 3 weeks early but was IUGR and 4 lbs and in the nicu, so the doc said she can easily be a month behind and she wouldn't be concerned. She's over 16 weeks and hasn't rolled, but she sits up pretty well.

Developmental PT here and I wouldn't worry until around 6 months.

At this age any positions they are in that they are extending their head against gravity is considered tummy time, on your chest, on your shins, in football hold etc. once in awhile revisit tummy time in a boppy or floor to build shoulder muscles.

When I would work on rolling from lying on back to stomach I would warm up their obliques by bringing there legs to one shoulder gently. Then place in side lying see if they complete on their own and work from their. I would also put them on a wedge so gravity is helping them. Side lying with lifting head against gravity is a great precursor to rolling.

Rolling stomach to back tuck one arm under their body and see if they will follow a toy with their head. Usually where there goes there body follows. The wedge works well with this too.

HTH and really don't worry about it your LO is still well within age range of normal development.

I'm exhausted so I hope this all makes sense.
  • DD is 4 months old and she just rolled over last week. She's been doing it several times a day since but it took her a while of half rolls to finally get it. I wouldn't worry about your LO not rolling over yet. They'll get there :)
  • 14 weeks here and still no rolling. I think you're ok!
