Crying at Nap

So DD is 1 year tomorrow and down to 1 nap a day. Problem is, upon putting her in the crib for nap time, she completely melts down. I hate that she cries herself to sleep every time. Now this usually only goes on for 5 minutes or so but it feels like forever. If I stay in the room, it goes on longer and she doesn't calm down. The rock to sleep approach has never worked for her and not planning to attempt this again. Always did eat, play, sleep so she never relied on the bottle before nap. Not sure when she'll accept its nap time and go down peacefully (I know, wishful thinking). Anyone else's LO meltdown at nap time? Any tips? When will this end!?

Re: Crying at Nap

  • Morning naps he may cry for a minute. Afternoon he usually has a total meltdown. Not sure why. I've tried different things but he continues until he passes out or I give up. Can't help, but it's not just you.

  • Are you following her cues or do you put her down at a specific time? I gave noticed that if I wait until she is ready, she gies down without a fight.
  • Definitely following cues..yawns and becomes irritable with her toys. Sometimes wonder if I'm waiting too long. She wakes around 7 and nap is around 1-1:30 to 2:30-3.
  • Oops. This is OP..signed in from mobile and I guess this was myknot sign in!
  • 6 hours seems like a really long time to be awake, maybe you are waiting a little bit too long, try moving it up and see if that works. My LO naps about 2 1/2 to 3 hours after she wakes up.
  • That is a long time. Benjamin is up at 6:30 and naps easily 10-11:30/12. The afternoon nap is iffy.

  • I've had to totally through DD's schedule out the window.  She's pretty much down to one nap now.  The timing varies.  Sometimes it's only 2 hours after she wakes and sometimes it's 4-5 hours after she wakes.  I try to go off her cues.  Occasionally she'll take  a second nap, but that's typically in the car.  She rarely takes a second nap for me at home anymore.

  • Thanks everyone. The times I've tried to put her down earlier, she naps but then isn't ready for nap 2 until around 5-5:30 which completely throws off bedtime. So we're down to 1 nap which is usually 1.5-2 hours but as I mentioned, so upset going down.
