Preemies

Intro and question about temperature

Baby was born 5 days ago at 36 weeks even. We are glad he got to cook as long as he did and overall he is healthy, though a bit small for his gestation, 4lb 11oz.

The only thing still keeping him in the NICU at this point is he can't hold his temperature, it drops when he's off his heaters even bundled and swaddled.

Has anyone been through this? If so how long did it take before they got past it? Did they have to get to a certain weight or age?

Any help appreciated. The NICU nurse said he's acting more like a preemie than a late preterm. And yes he's one of the famous wimpy white boys!

Re: Intro and question about temperature

  • Oh yes! Our LO was born at 31 weeks and he had a hard time maintaining through his whole NICU stay and even after he was home for about a month or so. They took him off the heaters about a week before he came home but he still had to be swaddled in sometimes two blankets and wear his hat. It'll get better with age. He just needs a little time. :-)

Welcome Boots! Congrats on the birth of your son! I am so sorry he's still in the nicu. Are you doing lots of skin to skin time? Among the many benefits is that babies can learn to regulate their temps better. I hope you get sprung free soon!

    My Wonder Woman!

  • Welcome and congratulations!!

I don't have much to add from other posts. My 30-weeker has had some issues, but temp regulation wasn't one of them. Ours were more anemia and breathing related.

On another note, sometimes these preemies struggle with something and then all of a sudden just take off and never look back! Hopefully that's the case for him too!
  • @Missa_g Thank you!

@jbranden12 Yes we try to, though now the LCs are making me weigh him before and after each feeding and supplement with pumped milk after so it's getting to be an ordeal to feed him even without trying to do skin to skin at the same time!

@ashleymarie512 That's what the doctor said too, that one day (hopefully soon!) a light bulb will switch on and he'll be fine after that. I'm hoping that's the case! Maybe when we get to 5 pounds. Probably doesn't matter the weight but it gives me a goal!

  • @bootsorhearts It really is amazing how they develop like that! My dd struggled with eating and kept forgetting to breath and would tire out easily. All of a sudden she took all her bottles in a day and never looked back. It was the craziest thing! I thought we'd be in the NICU for a other couple weeks working on it and we went home three days later. Sending your LO temp regulating vibes :)
  • Welcome Boots! I agree with PPs skin to skin is a huge help.
  • Welcome, Boots :)

When we were in the NICU, they told us that if Ozzy didn't maintain his body temperature, they'd put him back in the isolette for 24 hours and try again and often times the second try was successful. I don't know if that's true or not!

Your little guy will get there very soon!

  • I know we are on the same BMB but wanted to say welcome over here too. I cannot agree more with what PP have said about skin-to-skin time. I know it is frustrating, but in my experience, I just had to let DS figure things out although I would endlessly obsess  over ever oz and degree!!
  • Hey! My girls are still in the NICU for the same thing! One just made it to 5 lbs. and the other one is really close. They dr. feels like they may kick it into gear now that they are bigger! So glad your little man is here!
