Any other "crunchy moms"?

Hi everyone, brief intro: I'm 8 weeks with my second pregnancy, and have a 2 1/2 year old daughter. We eat gluten-free, organic, and use holistic medicine and homeopathy. My first daughter was born at a hospital, and got vaccinated until she was 6 months old. Since having her, I've learned soooo much and we no longer vaccinate, and I am using a birthing center for this pregnancy.

So, my main question/complaint is, I'm really having a hard time with the food aversions this time, and all I seem to crave is junk and gluten filled stuff. I have no idea what to eat, and nothing sounds good, but I'm feeling the pressure of needing to really nourish this baby. Anyone else in the same type of boat? Any ideas for good foods that I may not be thinking of?

  • Search crunchy on the board. I'm pretty sure someone else posted about that lifestyle semi-recently.

    Congrats!

  • Sorry no real healthy ideas, but OMG I love gluten free pretzels. I don't even eat gluten free and I would buy those and eat a whole bag in one sitting (if they were $6/bag lol). Sorry I'm not more help.

  • Yes, I am normally gluten free. I gave up on it about 2 weeks ago because I needed to eat and bread/pasta would stay down. I know it's not the best for me but it has to be better than not eating. Between nausea and actually throwing up I've realized I can't be picky the first trimester. Will hopefully be eating much better for the 2nd & 3rd. Just my opinion and what I've been dealing with. How it works out for you & you find a comfortable decision :-)

  • We eat organic and use holistic meds:) This is my 4th pregnancy:) Before being pregnant I was working out 5 days a week and on a low carb diet. It's what made me feel good:) Now pregnant I love to eat chips and hummus! I love to eat chips so I'm sticking with potato chips that are only potatoes, olive oil, and sea salt. It's not healthy but I'm trying to at least make it healthier than the other junk out there. I don't know why, but I feel our bodies telling us we need the carbs/gluten?

Good luck on eating healthy. As long as my kids are eating, I'm happy.

Oh wait, and protected from the majority of diseases that should be obsolete.

Edited because I read too fast.

  • IMO, 'learned sooo much' and 'no longer vaccinate' are mutually exclusive so I'll just assume you're referring to having learned about other things, and not the truth on vaccinating.

So those that do vax have learned nothing?

  • I cannot believe you aren't vaccinating!!!! Like seriously?!?! Once your child catches certain diseases that a vaccine would normally take care of...a vaccine or shot won't make it go away. ...so what did you learn? You obviously listened to some liberal nut job about this.
  • As far as your diet, there are ways to eat healthy even if you aren't gluten free or organic. Just be smart about your choices. I have never been gluten free or organic but I eat small portions throughout the day, mostly whole wheat and a lot of fruits/veggies/cheese.

Also it is completely within your right to not vaccinate your child. However, certain diseases like measles, mumps, polio, tetanus, diptheria are life threatening and if your child is exposed to them, could kill them. The doctor who claimed these things caused Autism was proven to have fabricated his research. Many parents who have not vaccinated, whose children have contracted these diseases have come out saying they wish they had vaccinated. In my opinion, you should at least consider these vaccines. Remember you can always choose which ones based on your comfort level as well. Personally, I will vaccinate for everything.

  • Thanks for your reply. I have done a tremendous amount of research in my decision to not vaccinate. If you are ever Interested In any of my research, id be happy to share. Please try not to judge me though and call me irresponsible, when in fact it takes a lot of responsibility to come to an informed decision to not vaccinate. I have absolutely no fears with my decision and can say that I am 100% at peace with my decision.
I know that your reply is just out of concern and ignorance though, so I fully understand your feelings. Please be respectful though. :)
  • If also like to add that I posted this to find other like minded mothers, not to be judges by those who are not on the same page.
I did not use the "autism research" as a basis in my decision, but rather hundreds of real scientific studies that include very large groups of people.

Those that are interesting in keeping the population safe by vaccinating... Do you receive boosters every year? Are you aware that vaccines only last a max of 10-15 years, and then if you don't receive a booster, it's ineffective?
  • When I was pregnant with DD my husband and I were debating whether or not to vax, then his cousin's daughter got sick and ended up in the hospital, they don't vaccinate and she has been in and out of the hospital for a yr and a half, has a trach, and can't really talk and is just now able to move all 4 of her limbs. They were unsure for a long time what she had but turns out her immune system was so wrecked from other sicknesses that she caught a slight flu and that knocked her over. The moment that happened we were like "yup, we're vaccinating" And we've never looked back. It's irresponsible not to. Talk to people in the medical field. My sister is a nurse, they see sick kids all the time because they weren't vaccinated, it's not worth it.

  • If you're kid is the only kid In a group who is not vaccinated, your kid is protected. If we all stopped vaccinating our kids, you get what we call an epidemic outbreak. Vaccines were invented and used to prevent these.

I have clothdiapered and breastfed. We eat healthy and organically as much as possible. I draw the line at vaccinations. If you want to risk illness in your child, that's your choice. But I don't think you will find many like minds on this board.

  • @michellexm I have no rubella immunity either

I first found out when I was pg with dd, after she was born I had a booster, but it didn't 'take' and I have even lower immunity (little to none) now (I guess I'm just one of those 5% of people that it doesn't work for)

I am SO scared about being around anti-vaxers. I make sure all people I'm around (that I can control - i.e. in my house, etc) vaccinate because the risk of catching rubella while pregnant is very very serious consequences to the baby - it scares me to death

  • @Americaninoz How do you know if you have immunity or not?

  • @jbosarge85 my gp did a blood test after I got pg and that was one of the things they tested (rubella immunity)
  • hmmm....with DD they took a bunch of blood, but they didn't mention anything. I'm guessing that since they didn't say anything I'm ok? I hope.....

  • yea I'd assume so - my doc only mentioned things that were an issue :)

and really all I can do now anyway is be aware and try to stay away from non-vaxers / babies under 1 who aren't vaccinated at least until I pass the 18 week mark, when the risk drops a lot.

  • We eat hormone free beef that my dad's coworker raises from a calf and it's delicious.  We also eat venison that is brought home by my husband.  He and his friends have their own processing equipment.  We drink our neighbors goat milk and eat produce grown locally.  I tried gluten free for awhile when my stomach and digestive tract were at their worst, but now I just try and eat a balanced diet.  I don't know if that makes me crunchy or just Kan-sassy lol.  Other than that we are over an hour away from any whole foods stores.  Buying organic is super expensive so I just try and make healthy choices.  My mom did get my kids organic pop tarts lol.  They were awesome.  I don't think they were healthy but they tasted great!   As for the vaccines I have a cousin who hasn't vaccinated her daughter and she is healthy.  Every child around her is vaccinated though.

I went on a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic and the main thing they asked for were vaccines.  We didn't have any, we were a surgery team.  Polio is awful, tetanus is a horrible and painful death.  Your back literally breaks.  I have seen several of these diseases in action and it isn't pretty.  I did do an alternative schedule for DD because she was sick with RSV at 10 weeks, I didn't want to bombard her immune system.  If that vaccine is ever ready I'll be first in line to get this baby immunized.  I swear it weakened her and now she catches everything and gets 100xs more ill than her brother.  I'm pro vaccine but it's your choice up until they go to school.  I think my cousin plans on homeschooling so hopefully her little one will stay well.

  • Oh and I do have to get boosters for work on most things.  My rubella titer is always low and I have had several boosters (while not pregnant).  The nice thing is my job pays for them.  DH had to get a bunch for nursing school and they were expensive since insurance didn't cover any of it.  I don't know why it didn't but if cost is an issue I hear community health departments can give them for much cheaper.

  • I'm know too many immune-compromised children/adults to consider not vax. I'd love to see your research as well, and what you think you're protecting your children from.

We deal with severe allergies, so I only limit for medical necessity. I have some intolerances so I avoid for those. We eat mostly whole foods (local/organic) so I know what is in our meals, DS has to due to restrictions. I ascribe to attachment parenting, free-range parent my child. BF, did a drug free first pregnancy, but will have to have a RCS, so obviously, will be using drugs there.

There are so many gluten free ways to get carbs, have you tried all the different grains and versions of rice or quinoa based pastas? I've been doing a lot of oatmeal and buckwheat pancakes.

    Anti-vax is not a liberal/conservative thing, it's a science thing.
  • I am wondering if vaccines work so well and your child is vaccinated why do you feel threatened by my unvaccinated child?
