Hi everyone, brief intro: I'm 8 weeks with my second pregnancy, and have a 2 1/2 year old daughter. We eat gluten-free, organic, and use holistic medicine and homeopathy. My first daughter was born at a hospital, and got vaccinated until she was 6 months old. Since having her, I've learned soooo much and we no longer vaccinate, and I am using a birthing center for this pregnancy.
So, my main question/complaint is, I'm really having a hard time with the food aversions this time, and all I seem to crave is junk and gluten filled stuff. I have no idea what to eat, and nothing sounds good, but I'm feeling the pressure of needing to really nourish this baby. Anyone else in the same type of boat? Any ideas for good foods that I may not be thinking of?
Re: Any other "crunchy moms"?
Congrats!

Oh wait, and protected from the majority of diseases that should be obsolete.
Edited because I read too fast.
Everything else is fine; do as you please. I am somewhat crunchy myself, but not vaccinating is irresponsible and puts other people at risk.
This was really driven home when my OB found I had no remaining rubella antibodies from my childhood vaccinations (meaning I'm unprotected from a disease that causes pretty nasty effects [like mental retardation] on unborn babies). Rubella isn't a vaccine you can get while pregnant as it's live. While it's unlikely, I just hope I don't meet a rubella carrier in the next 7 months. If you choose not to vaccinate your kids, you put me and my unborn baby at risk. Not cool.
When my kid is old enough to go to school, I'm going to make sure I find out if there are students in the school with vaccine exemptions. Too many of them in one school and we will find a different school.

While I don't agree with your controversial life choices, it saddens me to see Moms tearing Moms apart.
Name calling is not going to help any of us make healthy choices. Name calling is not going to help any of us become better educated. Name calling is never acceptable.
Also it is completely within your right to not vaccinate your child. However, certain diseases like measles, mumps, polio, tetanus, diptheria are life threatening and if your child is exposed to them, could kill them. The doctor who claimed these things caused Autism was proven to have fabricated his research. Many parents who have not vaccinated, whose children have contracted these diseases have come out saying they wish they had vaccinated. In my opinion, you should at least consider these vaccines. Remember you can always choose which ones based on your comfort level as well. Personally, I will vaccinate for everything.
I know that your reply is just out of concern and ignorance though, so I fully understand your feelings. Please be respectful though.
You're taking advantage of the fact that the rest of us are responsible and vaccinate. You get to buy into herd immunity without paying any sort of price. You're a mooch, and you put us all at risk. Please don't lecture me on responsibility. You clearly don't understand what that word means.
I did not use the "autism research" as a basis in my decision, but rather hundreds of real scientific studies that include very large groups of people.
Those that are interesting in keeping the population safe by vaccinating... Do you receive boosters every year? Are you aware that vaccines only last a max of 10-15 years, and then if you don't receive a booster, it's ineffective?
I have clothdiapered and breastfed. We eat healthy and organically as much as possible. I draw the line at vaccinations. If you want to risk illness in your child, that's your choice. But I don't think you will find many like minds on this board.
To the OP: There's nothing about going GF that's inherently healthy, so if you're having trouble finding food to eat, I would suggest considering allowing some foods with gluten. I mean, you have to eat something, right? If you have a tolerance issue, obviously that's another story and you should probably talk to a nutritionist for some ideas.
I suppose I could be considered "crunchy" in many ways (eat mostly organic, extended BFing, a fair amount of babywearing, mostly cloth diaper, etc.), but I would NEVER consider not vaccinating myself or my children. To me, not vaccinating is not "crunchy", it's a fear-based, ignorant decision that doesn't take into account the vast scientific literature showing how incredibly important it is and how overwhelmingly safe it is. Make no mistake, not vaccinating your children is putting them and people around you who are unable to vaccinate for VALID medical reasons at severe risk. I sincerely HOPE you never have to experience one of your children contracting a deadly or debilitating disease, and the chances are very good that someone they come into contact with will.
@michellexm I have no rubella immunity either
I first found out when I was pg with dd, after she was born I had a booster, but it didn't 'take' and I have even lower immunity (little to none) now (I guess I'm just one of those 5% of people that it doesn't work for)
I am SO scared about being around anti-vaxers. I make sure all people I'm around (that I can control - i.e. in my house, etc) vaccinate because the risk of catching rubella while pregnant is very very serious consequences to the baby - it scares me to death
And you said you'd give us the research if we asked. I asked. You can PM it to me if you want, but I'm legitimately curious to see what you're going to come up with.
And honest question. Would you rather your child come down with polio than get the vaccination? When it comes down to it, that's the question. I just cannot understand where you come up with the word responsible to describe that decision. Enlighten me.
yea I'd assume so - my doc only mentioned things that were an issue
and really all I can do now anyway is be aware and try to stay away from non-vaxers / babies under 1 who aren't vaccinated at least until I pass the 18 week mark, when the risk drops a lot.
And for the poster who said that they hate seeing name calling and moms tearing down other moms, I 100% agree with you. I will never judge another mom for the way they feed their kid or bring them into this world. I will, however, judge them and voice this judgement when their choices affect my kid and other kids, not to mention myself. There are some things we need to do in life to benefit those around us. Vaccinating is one of them.

We eat hormone free beef that my dad's coworker raises from a calf and it's delicious. We also eat venison that is brought home by my husband. He and his friends have their own processing equipment. We drink our neighbors goat milk and eat produce grown locally. I tried gluten free for awhile when my stomach and digestive tract were at their worst, but now I just try and eat a balanced diet. I don't know if that makes me crunchy or just Kan-sassy lol. Other than that we are over an hour away from any whole foods stores. Buying organic is super expensive so I just try and make healthy choices. My mom did get my kids organic pop tarts lol. They were awesome. I don't think they were healthy but they tasted great! As for the vaccines I have a cousin who hasn't vaccinated her daughter and she is healthy. Every child around her is vaccinated though.
I went on a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic and the main thing they asked for were vaccines. We didn't have any, we were a surgery team. Polio is awful, tetanus is a horrible and painful death. Your back literally breaks. I have seen several of these diseases in action and it isn't pretty. I did do an alternative schedule for DD because she was sick with RSV at 10 weeks, I didn't want to bombard her immune system. If that vaccine is ever ready I'll be first in line to get this baby immunized. I swear it weakened her and now she catches everything and gets 100xs more ill than her brother. I'm pro vaccine but it's your choice up until they go to school. I think my cousin plans on homeschooling so hopefully her little one will stay well.
We deal with severe allergies, so I only limit for medical necessity. I have some intolerances so I avoid for those. We eat mostly whole foods (local/organic) so I know what is in our meals, DS has to due to restrictions. I ascribe to attachment parenting, free-range parent my child. BF, did a drug free first pregnancy, but will have to have a RCS, so obviously, will be using drugs there.
There are so many gluten free ways to get carbs, have you tried all the different grains and versions of rice or quinoa based pastas? I've been doing a lot of oatmeal and buckwheat pancakes.

Anti-vax is not a liberal/conservative thing, it's a science thing.
