Baby measuring 10 days behind

Went for my A/S yesterday and our little girl seemed to be doing great. Great heart , kidneys ect. When we were done they went and got Dr. He says she is measuring 10 days behind the last scan they had done which was the NT scan. They explained there was nothing they could do at this point and that they are all completely stumped. I am now on bedrest and was told to just keep eating. Anybody else with this? If she doesn't start growing and catching up by 24 weeks ob said there would be a chance they would take her early to intervene so she can get the nutrients she isn't currently getting. Any advice or experience wouldn't be helpful :) not at all what we were expecting.

Re: Baby measuring 10 days behind

  • I am so sorry you are going through this!! I never had any of the scans with my DD1 over 9 years ago so we did not know she was so small. We got quite the surprise when she was born weighing only 4 lbs 4.5 oz. I wish we would have known. I am so glad that they found out now for you and that they can keep an eye on her. Sending many T&Ps for you and baby girl!

I'm sorry, I don't have experience but I hope everything is okay. Are they thinking it is IUGR? I know that babies grow at really varying rates in second tri but I'm not sure to what extent. I hope you get good news at 24 weeks!

  • Thank you @Medic99 - I have an almost 9 year old too. Boy have things changed.
  • I hope your baby is fine. I have a friend who had Hypermesis Gravidarium and her baby was 3 weeks behind. The doctors advised her to terminate the pregnancy but she didn`t. Now he`s a beautiful boy.

  • 10 days doesn't seem like much given the margin of error on ultrasounds. If at 12w they erred a little large, and the A/S they erred a little small, that could cut it down to a week or so behind. Not that it negates your doctors concerns.

I hope she gets busy growing in there.

  • my u/s tech at our elective scan (who runs a boutique diagnostic ultrasound center for high risk women, and is VERY up to date on the latest in the fetal development realm) says she doesn't even bat an eyelash unless baby is measuring more than 2 weeks ahead or behind the expected date.

i'm hoping everything is fine with your little one - best to be safe for sure, but it sounds like your doctors are being realistic and cautious at the same time.  hang in there, mama!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I had something similar. At 11 weeks I had a CVS procedure done, and at that point the baby was measuring over 1 week ahead (I think it was like 1w1d? Maybe 2?) Anyway, I had my level II ultrasound at 19w2d and baby was only measuring 18w5 days. He went from measuring over a week ahead to being behind, dropping almost 2 weeks overall.

My doctors weren't concerned about it as he was still in the normal range for his gestational age (in the 36th percentile) and I did a lot of research and found that anything within 2 weeks either direction of the gestational age is considered normal. If your baby is 10 days behind, that is within that range so I'm not sure why your doctors are as worried as they are and have you on bed rest. I'm not a doctor though, but I just know in my situation they weren't concerned and it doesn't seem at all different from your situation. Just take care of yourself and keep on eating! :) I made sure to up the protein after my level II.

  • I'm so sorry your dealing with this. I have no advice.
    Thoughts and prayers
  • I'm surprised your doctor is so concerned about 10 days.  From what I've read, they will adjust due date when it moves more than -/+7 days, but that's about it.  Also, the bigger the baby gets the less accurate the measuring scans are.  I would say focus on getting a lot of protein, good fats, and nutrients and see if it gets better when they give you the next u/s.

Sorry that you didn't get better news.

  • I think the problem is not that it's measuring ten days behind but that at the first ultrasound it wasn't and now it's behind.

  • Thank you all for Your support. The fact that the Dr's are stumped is scary. I'm just thinking positive thoughts and eating :) hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  • Had my a/s yesterday. Lo is consistently measuring over a wk ahead. When I mentioned moving my due date up the OB said at 20wks there is a 2 wk window of error. Maybe baby is just on the small side and the measuring is a bit off? GL and try to relax.

  • My baby is measuring 9 days behind and the doctor doesn't see too worried about it. My doc said some times they just grow at a different pace and will probably catch up. they just want to monitor and make sure! Sorry that you are deal with it though, i understand your worry.
