my prenatal vitamins suck

Ever since I started taking my prenatal vitamins they've been making me sick. I started taking them at night and that doesn't help. I will wake up in the middle of the night to go puke my brains out... I don't want to stop taking them but I can't keep doing this! Are there any alternatives?? Help!!

  • Mine do this too.  I take them at night right before I go to bed so I fall asleep and forget about the sickness.

  • FYI: the gummy prenatals don't contain iron to the best of my knowledge so you'll need an iron supplement also.
  • I use Rainbow Light Prenatal 1.  Doesn't make me sick (although I eat with them) and there isn't any synthetics in it.  Its all plant based.

  • Thanks y'all... unfortunately the gummies make me sick too :( I'm running out of options!!
  • Are you taking them with a bigger meal?
    <<a href="http://lilypie.com/">Lilypie - Personal pictureLilypie First Birthday tickers>
  • Try the gummies. My prenatal vitamins made me really sick so I would hVe to take the gummies on the days I felt more down. They have no iron so they won't make you sick

    It's a BOY

  • I take the Nature Made Pre-Natal gel caps after meals and I am fine. I know with the chalky ones I get sick too.

Ive had bad morning sickness so the biggest meal I eat all day is dinner which is like an hour before I take my prenatal.

These are actually the ones I'm taking....
  • I take new chapter prenatal vitamins and Nortic berry DHA strawberry flavor.
No issues at all. I even take them I an empty stomach. You take them three times a day. I do two times or I will forget. Still no issues. No after taste. Love them!!!

I may have to try these... where do you get them??
  • The up and up brand ones are amazing. They are called "women's daily prenatal combo pack" there is a multivitamin and a dha supplement. They smell great and have a vanilla aftertaste. They were easy on my stomach, I could even take them on an empty stomach. They aren't very expensive either. I like them better than the sugary gummy ones.
  • Try taking it with your dinner

  • I have the nature made kind and they were terrible. Witched to a plant based one from Sprouts and no issues. Any whole foods type stores should carry plant based! Good luck!!

You can get a trimester worth of the new chapter. They are vegan and plant based. A friend of mine who had twins last year told me about them. I even notice a difference in my nails.

The DHA I like because no burping fish after taste. The ones I get are strawberry flavor. They do have ones that say DHA prenatal but no flavor. I wanted the flavor.

  • When I'm not pregnant I can take all my pills at night with just a glass of water. Now that I have the super sensitive stomach from hell- I make sure to take them in the middle of dinner. Being too full or empty just guarantees that I'll throw them up. I also preemptivly take half a zofran if I'm feeling even the slightest bit queasy within an hour- keeping my meds down is important to me :)

This. Vitamins are made to break down into food. Take a few bites of your meal, take your pill and finish your dinner. If vitamins do not have food to break down into they sit like a rock in your stomach and you feel queasy.

  • I just went to my midwife with this same issue and she told me to start taking children's chewables. You have to take two a day instead of one bit so far they seem to be helping!
  • I take the target brand gummies with dha.  They're delicious and super easy on the tummy.

  • I do the gummy vitamins with breakfast -- way better. I buy mine at Kroger.

  • Iron is often the cause of the stomach problems. Try taking prenatals without iron (I also take the gummy ones mentioned before) and add iron to your diet some other way!
  • I take the gummy prenatals.  They are the only ones that don't make me sick.  I say that with the disclaimer that my diet is so healthy that my doctor says I probably don't even need prenatals at all, I am that nutty.

This, I take gummies and have never been sick because of them.

  • Thanks y'all. I actually have tried the gum mies and they make me nauseous too. I started taking a children's multivitamin and that's working for me. Thanks for all the advice!
  • I am taking Vita-fol. It is a prescription my doc gave me. They also have it with DHA. Lots of luck:)
  • Sorry to resurrect a dated post but I was but I didn't want to start a whole new one on the same subject.

We are traveling for holidays and I left my prenatals at home, of course. I use a brand you can buy at GNC, but haven't seen at drugstores. I would like to buy some on the road but everything closes very early on today aside from maybe a CVS which won't have MY brand but will have A brand. I did some googling about switching prenatals and get conflicting answers. Livestrong, my new least favorite site, actually advises against it. I don't know if I buy it, can that really harm the pregnancy?

I obviously don't want to bother my OB about this, especially over the holidays. My only other thought is to go the next two days (nothing is open on Thanksgiving nor am I a big supporter of stores open on Tday) without and just hit a GNC Friday.

I have been lurking so I want to say I know you ladies aren't doctors and I may be asking a dumb question but would love to hear if you've switched and no issues or if you recommend just holding off until Friday.
And if there is controversy over whether people need prenatals or not, I am one that doesn't get enough nutrients in diet so I do need.
    TIA.

I have no idea but I probably would skip a few days. I dont think 1-2 days would hurt. But that is me.

  • I surprise myself sometimes. I had packed them last night knowing I would forget to grab this morning.

But in talking to my husband, he put it into perspective "Wait, they're vitamins, right? Just vitamins?" And I realized how ridiculous I sounded. Thanks for the response though!
  • I take all the needed vitamins for a happy, healthy pregnancy separately.  That way I can space out everything rather than it hitting my stomach all at once.  I tend to take my iron in the morning with a hearty breakfast/lunch since it is the most likely to cause an upset stomach.  My folic acid/folate I take at night before bed, but after dinner.  I also take zinc and cod liver oil.  I make up for the other vitamins with a whole foods diet.

May not be the 'ideal' or 'normal' approach to get prenatals, but it works for me :]

Yes this is what I did with my boys because the Iron in the regular ones made me sick. However this time I am taking the gummies and they are not bothering my stomach and they taste good.
  • A pregnant friend mentioned that she took a regular multi-vitamin and an extra Folic Acid tablet (or two depending on how much was in the multi-vitamin) for her first trimester and she didn't get sick as often. Talk to your doctor and see if it's worth a shot? I was going to try it but it doesn't seem to make me sick anymore.
  • I had the same problem...I take 1mg (a bit more than the average pre-natal) of folic avid every day, per my OB.
