What are your engagement stories?

Nothing to do with babies, kids or pregnancies for once! Haha

I was just watching the "sex in the city" movie and was thinking about how both proposals were a little weak for my taste (Regardless of the happy ending). But different people like different ways of proposing. So, question is, how did your proposal happen?

My DW took me to long wood gardens, which is a huge extravagant garden in Pennsylvania, during Christmas time. So there were glittering Christmas lights everywhere and soft classic Christmas music playing in the backround. There's a musical fountain show in the garden that jumps and lights up each time there is a musical note. Its not a sit down show but instead a passing by Show. so people were gathered up by the fountain gate watching. DW and I were watching the show snuggled up (because it was FREEZING!) and just as the last song came on, she pulled me closer to the front to "get a better look". People were getting mad because we were getting in front of them. But then she started her little speech and I'm unaware of whats about to happen and worried about what people are thinking haha. Then she gets on her knee and I about crapped. By then everybody is in awe or running off because they don't agree with our lifestyle and are shielding their kids eyes haha. But what I thought was the best was when I said yes and the fountains light up to the highest point. Was almost like a movie and I'll never ever forget it! :)

What are your stories ladies? Or if you're not engaged/married yet, what's your dream engagement?

Re: What are your engagement stories?

  • We were sitting on a moutain overlooking Neuschwanstein Castle (the one the Disney castle is based on) in Southern Germany and he got down on 1 knee and got out the ring he had been hiding all day in his pocket. I was SO shocked - and it was SUCH an amazing setting - I love our engagement story :)

  • That's so beautiful! Lol I'm jealous of the castle!
  • I had ALWAYS wanted to visit that castle and OMG it's gorgeous. We were just there on a weekend trip - it was such a surprise :)
  • Is it just a tour of the castle or is there more to it? Lol I may have to convince my DW to take me there for our anniversary.
  • There is a tour, and honestly the inside isn't as awesome as the outisde ( only a few rooms on view, and just crazy weird - he was called crazy king ludwig after all :) But there's a nice walk around the outsdie too with amazing views. We also loved going to the nearby village and riding bicycles we rented around for the day - and we took the gondola up for another view of the castle (where we got engaged). It's also not a massive train ride from Munich - so we did Munich and Schwangau in the one, 3 day weekend. TOTALLY worth seeing once IMO, such a gorgeous part of the world
  • As soon as you said gondola I was sold! Haha but that sounds just perfect for a laid back European trip. I love little villages anywhere so that's an added plus!
  • just to clarify by gondola I mean cable car :)
  • It was his birthday and I was about to go to the store. I had gone down stairs in my robe (opened (no need to close it) and I was naked underneath), and I asked him if there was anything he needed and he said he had everything he wanted except one thing.  I asked him what was that and he dropped to one knee and proposed.  3 months later we were married and two weeks later I got my BFP.

  • "What the hell are you doing on the floor? It's dirty!"

Bahahaha! If I had the energy to laugh while rolling on the floor, I would. That's adorable!

As for the gondola ride lol well, nvm to that! I'm crushed :( still sounds marvelous though!
  • Hahaha too cute!
  • We were at a Jason Mraz concert that he had given me tickets to for my birthday. He sings "our song" but DH wasn't sure he would play it so he proposed during a random but nice song. He took me to a bar to celebrate after and his brothers and sister in law were there waiting for us. Then he had a limo to take us home. He did a really nice job - I was shocked!

  • My DH proposed at a club with special significance to my family with my parents there to take pictures. I was so shocked, my response has yet to be lived down... "Are you serious?!" As he was down on one knee, he looked uncomfortably around and said, "uh, yes?"

The theme of my bridal shower was also "Are You Serious?!"

That's the same thing I said when my DH proposed! He still makes fun of me for it.
  • ^^^ brought a tear to my eye.

Lol I can't think of anything acceptably sarcastic enough to say to that. But I did get a good chuckle in!
  • Omg, everything with ours went wrong.  We'd been out shopping for rings together, but hadn't found the *perfect* one.  Anyway, while I was in Salt Lake City for work, Hus took a secret trip down to Tiffany's and found a most incredible ring for me.  Since he can't keep a secret, we went down to the store to get it sized and ordered and everything, so I then knew the ring.

For the engagement, I had been on a business trip to Germany for a couple weeks and I had the UPS thing that informs you when things get delivered (via email), so I knew the day that my ring got dropped off at our apartment and was still stuck in Germany for another 5 days.  Every day I called him to ask how he was going to do it... we use car service to get to/from the airport, so when I got home, we were talking in the car and he kind of knew how far away I was (but not really).  Anyway, we got to the house before he got back from picking up my fave food (Hana Sushi), and I ended up sitting on our back deck in the cold (since he was supposed to be home so I didn't take my keys) for like, half an hour.  I was sooo pissed and tried to call him like a million times.  Meanwhile he came home and entered through the garage so I never saw him.

When he (finally) rescued me from the deck, I walked in to the candles and the flowers and the sushi all on the table and while we were eating, he asked me (on one knee of course).  In the end of all the calls about how to propose, I told him I wouldn't turn down a Tiffany ring no matter how he asked (and boy was he nervous about all of it).
  • Mine was at our favorite sushi restaurant on a random weekday. It was low key and laid back just like us.
  • My DH knew I would figure it out if he took me somewhere, so he did it on a random Thursday evening when we were putting away groceries in our tiny apartment kitchen. I was being a total grump, and I turn around to grab another bag and he's on his knee! Very private, just us, and I wouldn't want it any other way.
  • We were laying in bed one night and DH was like why don't we go to the court house Friday and get married, that was how he proposed. We ended up waiting three months and having a small ceremony in his dads back yard.

I later found out he had planned to propose on the Fourth of July. He was going to take me to a local town with an awesome fireworks display and while the fireworks were going off propose.

I joke that he owes me a proper proposal if we ever hit the lottery.

  • aaaw my husband and i met while working for Disney in Orlando. i pictured a proposal in front of the castle, or in the middle of main street, or while Wishes was blowing up in the in the night sky. Then...he got on one knee while hanging out with his best buddy Goofy :-) of course he couldn't speak so i just thought it was cute.
A week later or so, he got on one knee in our living room, with out a ring and proposed. i thought he was joking! took me a while to believe him :-) he said he couldn't keep it in anymore and he just blurted it out! two weeks later we went on a cruise and he proposed with the ring :-) all three were absolutely magical

  • Your ring is gorgeous!

My DW had mine custom made. She says she got it made to look like a flower with a simple pink diamond in the middle with a rose gold band because my favorite flowers are pink roses haha and I love gold. It's so unique. Couldn't afford a wedding band after that :/ lol but I love it all the same.
  • Lol that's how my mother and father got proposed. Just casually laying in bed and saying "hey, let's get married. Ok"
  • My DW planned a surprise picnic for me. She brought all my favorite foods, and at the end she pulled out some fresh strawberries and a big piece of chocolate cake. She asked me to open the cake (to distract me...tricky) while she got out my ring. We were both sitting, but she got up on one knee and said, "So what do you think? You wanna do this forever?" :)
  • Holy cow! Another lesbian couple :) I'm excited now! That's absolutely adorable.

We were going to my brothers new house for their first Christmas Tree lighting. We had champagne and everything to cheers with them finally owning the house (it was a very long process). They plugged in the tree and only half the lights worked.

I was sitting on a chair in front of the tree with one of their dogs. All of a sudden DH goes "well I can't stand it anymore" (he's an awful secret keeper, he had the ring all of 24hrs) and I assumed he meant he wanted to open the champagne haha. Next thing I know he is kneeled in front of me and he said "will you marry me?". I immediately started crying and said "you're a fucking jerk". Everyone apparently laughed ha. Then we popped the champagne and celebrated!

I know, me too!! I thought there was only one other, and she had to leave. :( It's nice to not be the "token". Where do you two live? :)

  • My husband came to my apartment and made dinner. He had champagne and roses and got down on one knee.

His original plan was to take me ice skating (this was February) at the state park where we met and propose when were out on the lake. However, it got unseasonably warm during the week and the ice started to melt.

  • My hubs and I have been together forever, off and on since we were 18. Almost 3 years ago now we went to Disney World with our daughter. We had a perfect day, and then squabbled over where to sit for the fireworks. We finally got situated and Wishes began. At one point in the program, for ladies that don't know, there's a shooting star (firework) and over the speakers the Blue Fairy says let's all put our hearts together to make a wish come true tonight. I leaned over to our daughter and pointed out the star and told her to wish fast! Hubs said I made my wish. I said oh yeah? He said yep, I wished that you would marry me. Will you help make my wish come true? I almost dropped my camera, I asked if he was serious at least 6 times and then we kissed. He said to our daughter hey guess what, Mommy and Daddy are getting married. She said that's so disgusting. Lol. He was going to propose later in the week on the beach but he said that was a perfect moment and he couldn't pass it up.

  • DH and I were at his family cabin for a weekend trip and we had just finished a delicious meal of local beer, meat and cheeses. He got up to add wood to the fire and then called me over and asked me to marry him. I squealed and asked if he was serious...and said no! I was so surprised!! I ran away and ran around the house and then came back and said "oh my god of course!" He was mad I started with a no, heehee. That was on 11.11.11, we got married on 7.13.13 and now, here we are!

  • These are all really beautiful stories ladies!
  • we went to grand bend beach on our 4 year anniversary Dh had originally wanted to do it infrot of his family but i had said i would prefer it be me and him and then we call them. On our anniversary he had me convinced we weren't getting engaged because he couldn't afford it at the time. The beach was busy but we found a quiet spot semi alone and he said for our anniversary we were going to write our wishes for the next 20 years on a piece of paper and put it in the bottle and put it into the lake. When i unrolled the piece of paper there was another one inside that said will you marry me yes no sure. i of course said sure as it was our joke since we started dating when he asked me out i said sure why not.

  • He texted me early in the week and said he wanted to take me somewhere that I would never forget because that night would be special. Ding, ding, ding.... I was on to him but I never let on we went to the Opryland Hotel, here in Nashville. It is beautiful in there. He found a water fountain and said all this mushy gushy stuff, then asked me to marry him. It wasn't a huge, knock you out proposal, but it was just fine for us.
