Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Issues with feeding solids?

My boy will be 7 months in a week.  He will sometimes eat solids and sometimes not... He first started right around 6 months.  I'd say he will successfully eat a full "serving" that we make a little less than half the time.  He kind of shuts his mouth like he's refusing to eat.  We have the most success with rice cereal, but not so much veggies.  Has anyone else gone through this?  Any advice?  I try to time it so it's about an hour before he'd want a bottle so he's kind of hungry but not starving.

  • Don't worry about it. He may not be ready yet. We started at 6.5 months and she only just got actually interested this week at 8.5 months. They all mature a bit differently and I've never seen a high schooler still nursing (or taking a bottle)! He'll get there eventually!

  • You could always try finger foods. We do BLW, so we skipped the purees.
  • as long as he is taking bottles that is good.  You can try mixing in some veggies/fruit and rice.  I will do this for breakfast or dinner.  It could help him get use to it.

  • What kind of veggies? Sometimes you have to feed it to them more than once. I do BLW as well but use the purees in a pinch since I work full time. My daughter loves the oatmeal though.
  • My LO has been finicky since the beginning with solids. There are only very few things that she will always eat consistently - flavored oatmeals, mum mum crackers, veggie puffs, cooked apples, and applesauce. With everything else I've given her, who knows if she'll like it today or not. If she's tired, she won't want to eat. But she has gotten better with time. Perhaps it's because she's getting more used to different flavors and textures. Just keep offering foods but don't force it. Unfortunately you end up waisting food, but that's part of the process. At least if you make the food yourself, it's much cheaper than having to throw out store bought baby food.

I agree with also trying chunks of soft foods. My LO doesn't feed herself yet, but she often likes it when I feed them to her, like banana or cooked apple.
