Talk to me about eczema.

Howell has had it mildly since birth but it's been a thing where as long as we remembered lotion after a bath, he was fine. Now his poor back has a major outbreak of it and it's not going away. He sees his pedi next Monday and I'll ask her about it. But in the meantime, has anything worked for relief? I got babyganics eczema cream and some oatmeal bath packets. Anything else? Thanks! My sister said steroid cream was what finally worked for her son.

    Slather him in Aquaphor.
If it doesn't help, give him a bath, slather him in Aquaphor, and stick him in wet pajamas for an hour or two.
If that doesn't help, go to the pedi and get the steroid cream.
If that doesn't help, it's time for the dermatologist.
If that doesn't help, WELCOME TO MY WORLD FOR THE LAST YEAR.

Seriously, though, the Aquaphor and the wet jammies should clear it right up.

  • Tell me about these oatmeal bath packets!!!

We use Aveeno baby eczema cream daily on Liam. It helps, but it doesn't make it go away completely. We got a prescription from the pedi for Desinide (sp?) last week. We are going to hold off on using it though unless it gets really bad.

They're by aveno. I just got them at Target.

I wasn't sure about the hydrocortisone because the tube said not before two. It doesn't seem to bother him but it looks so terrible. Poor babies and their afflicted skin!

If DS has a flare up I slather on Cetaphil cream, then on the really bad patches I put a layer of Aquaphor and then hydrocortisone cream.  Pedi recommended it.  It's usually cleared up by morning.  I switched him to Cetaphil soap which has really helped!!

  • No further advice, just wanted to say the good news is that he'll hopefully grow out of it.  J had it bad on his cheeks during the winter for his first two years and mildly in the crease of his arm for a while after.  He has had no issues with it for years though.

  • The cream and oatmeal bath sound good for now.  We ended up being referred to a pediatric dermatologist when DD was 6 months old and she was put on Desonide...works wonders.

  • We use Eucerin and hydrocortisone for flare ups. We had to go to a pediatric dermatologist for one spot that wouldn't go away and we ended up with a steroid that cleared it right up.

  • DS's pedi recommended hydrocortisone after a few months of non medicated lotions not working. DS scratches his feet until they bleed...ugh. He has it other places, but not quite as bad.

The pedi said to use the hydrocortisone for only 3 to 4 days at a time. It cleared up the mild spots and helped with the worst of it, but it didn't clear it up completely.

The thing his pedi said usually works is slathering on baby oil gel right after bath while they are still wet. Didn't really make much difference for DS. The other thing the office recommended was Vanicream lotion.
