Pregnant after 35

Trouble gaining weight?

I have an odd problem. I have a 16 month old. Had her when I was 37. My whole pregnancy, I gained a whopping 4 lbs. and she was a little over 6 lbs and perfectly healthy. I'm due in May with #2, and it appears the same thing is happening. Last time I lost 11 lbs the first trimester. This time I lost 6. And neither time have I had morning sickness. My OB tells me not to worry, the baby is healthy and growing, but to do whatever I can to gain weight. Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas how to gain weight?? (BTW, this is so not an issue when I'm not preggers!!). Last time I resorted to bacon cheese fries and ding dongs and spent the whole time apologizing to the Bun for feeding her crap!

Re: Trouble gaining weight?

  • I'm still 8 pounds down from my pre-pregnancy weight, but my Dr. doesn't seem concerned.   The baby has measured ahead at the past 2 ultrasounds, so he is growing well despite of this.    I keep expecting to balloon up anytime since I've always been overweight and I haven't run in 10 weeks now.

  • In stead of packing in unhealthy food choices to gain weight, what about nuts, whole milk and food with high calories and nutritional valve over ding songs, etc....

Tried that last time and just kept losing weight. Part of the problem was fiber. Not to be too gross, but my body was and is super-sensitive to fiber. In my normal, non-pregnant life, I eat a very healthy, very high fiber diet. It's hard to find healthy foods that are not high in fiber!
  • What about nutritional shakes that you can add between or with meals? They have other brands including generic,  but similar to Ensure or Boost?

  • Ooh! I hadn't thought of those shakes! I'll try that. Anything is better than eating junk. I don't eat a lot of junk normally, and it's kind of gross if you aren't used to it.
  • no I cannot relate!  Wish I could, well sort of... I know any issue with food/weight is an entirely different ball game while pregnant.  Just curious are you a heavish woman?  If the dr is not concerned why are you?  I would LOVE if I didn't gain quite so much as long as the baby was growing and healthy.  Your fetus gets the nutrients from foods first then you so any deficiencies are in your body not the child.  Are you taking a high quality prenatal vitamin?

I would use whole fat butter, sourcream, dairy products to up the calorie and fat intake and try the shakes/ supplements as suggested.  High fat foods alone aren't the answer, but not having to use 1% milk on my cereal, in cooking, etc. would be wonderful to me!

Best wishes for a healthy baby and mom!

  • I'm a very healthy weight. In fact, I'm still down about 25 lbs from the last pregnancy, and I was already in the healthy BMI range. I'm just good at rule-following, and I keep hearing 20 lbs is optimal, and I'm so struggling to meet that "goal". Lol. My doc just reminded me again that this weight issue is normal for me and I ended up with a perfect baby last time. He's been great. His recommendation now is to make DH take me out for ice cream more often. And to relax. Like it's just that easy. :)
  • Glad Dr. isn't worried - though if you find you're still really worried then it might be worth asking to be referred to meet with a nutritionist.  And/or make sure that you're taking a vitamin with a longer rather than shorter list of nutrients in it (more than just the very basics) since in avoiding high-fiber stuff you may also be missing out on many vitamins and minerals especially the minor/less thought of ones. Though then again it is just for a few months not your whole life.  Eating a healthy variety of foods when you have to avoid those high in fiber is pretty challenging - my father has that problem (post- colon cancer) and there is just so much he can't eat!  He does OK with cashews, at least in moderation - they might be lower fiber than other nuts and are pretty caloric and nutritious so might be a good snack for you?  There's also nitrate-free (not cured the regular way) bacon ... delicious and caloric!  And if you like these things - fettucini (sp?) alfredo, chicken tikka masala or butter chicken (indian curries with rich creamy/buttery sauces and not much veggies in them - tomato sauce and maybe onion but the onion is very very cooked/pureed so might be OK fiber-wise and some may not even have onion) or curries with lamb which is even richer.  Casseroles/hot dishes with sour cream in them.  Nachos with sour cream.  Oooh I'm getting hungry ...   better stop!    Along with the dairy and shake recommendations from others who posted (though check shake labels - some add fiber).  Eggs are good too if you like them.

And of course plenty of ice cream - especially now that it's doctor's orders!  :)
