constipation

Gave my LO prunes (Thursday) and now it has become super hard to pass stool. The past two nights he has woken up at 3:00am screaming while trying to poop. His movements were a little hard before the prunes, but now it's gotten so much worse, I figured the prunes would make it better.

  • I am going thru the same issues but I think it is because we are on antibiotics for an ear inffection... Pear juice has worked really well for me in the past, going to try more today... I have found that prunes just upset her stomach more, think they are a little harsh... maybe try some juice? It's awful, I am right there with ya momma!

  • we had problems with Bradley being constipated. up screaming almost every night. I started him on real oatmeal (quick oats) and I use half water, half white grape juice. then I also mix pears with it once its cooked. works great for us. he poops once a day, every day between 3 and 4 pm. its awesome.

  • Maybe you already know, but our pediatrician said any food that starts with a P helps get the poop going. And a little tummy massage helps too! We had trouble with our older daughter and that's how we found out. Good luck!

Yup prunes is one of those 'P' foods, but seems to be doing him more harm then good. Thanks though..

  • We are having a similar problem and my thinking is that the prunes are not making the stool harder, but it gets things going and the stool is already hard it just gets it to come out. My son is having pain during his bowel movements too. It's so sad. We tried a suppository they told us to use half of an infant one but that seem to just hurt him more when I put it and he screamed.
MD said stop any starchy foods like rice cereal, apples, and potatoes and give high fiber foods like P foods and broccoli, squash and sweet potatoes. Plus we are trying 1 oz pear juice mixed with 2 oz o water a couple of times a day. it hasn't really solved the problem completely yet, but I think it's getting better. I hope this helps.

  • I have to take Brayden to the pediatrician this afternoon for a glycerin suppository because I have the same situation as you.  He hasn't had a good poo since Thursday & I've tried prunes, pear juice diluted with water, and pears which normally work.
