morning ladies! a challenge and a question.

It's Monday!  How about everyone that reads this thread gives me a love it then starts a new thread?

SO, do you try to shop local for gifts, Christmas and otherwise?  I am doing most of my shopping at local small businesses this year, with a few exceptions.  Last year I did most of my Christmas shopping on Amazon and it sucked all the joy out of it for me.  Ick.   We have lots of amazing little shops around here so it's really easy to stick to it, even if I am spending a bit more on stuff.  It's worth it, totally.  How about you!?

Re: morning ladies! a challenge and a question.

  • I shop local as in the local Wal-Mart and Target. During those trips, I eat at the local Taco Bell.

  • I try to shop mostly local, but I admit I do a lot from Amazon. It's too easy, and there are things I can't find locally that I can there.
  • Sadly, I do almost all of my shopping on Amazon.  The crowds the past few years have sucked all of the joy out of Christmas shopping for me.  I live in a border town with an nice outlet mall, and we have a lot of Canadian shoppers.  Great for business, bad for traffic and lines.  I just don't enjoy it, so I shop from my couch.  I did some local shopping a few weeks ago when DH and I were staycationing in Buffalo, but honestly there are only a small handful of shops where I live.  I usually buy some gifts from them too.

  • I don't know. I used to but since we have to travel to Chicago with gifts, I may not. Or I may save some shopping for my favorite places in Chicago.

Dh is really good about finding products from an online retailer in a regular small business. I'm not so good at it.  I haven't even started with Christmas shopping this year.  I'm hoping to go local for a few specific things, like I want Albert to pick out his first Christmas ornament and there is an ornament shop here in town.  Most of it probably won't be local if I'm the one buying, though.

  • Yes, I do try to shop local, although there are some exceptions. I also try to avoid buying unnecessary crap year round, so even though I may pay more to buy locally, I feel like I spend less all around because I don't buy so much. For example, I never go into Target and leave with a cart load of stuff I had no intention of purchasing.
  • I am a whore for Amazon. But I do recognize there are local artists and artisans in my fair city and I have purchased there. I even try to do etsy shops more. But I feel sometimes those items don't go over well as gifts when people can't guess their value (yes my fam is as materialistic as they come). So here I am spending top dollar for thoughtful crafts when they'd rather have the mass produced stuff I can get online cheap. Go figure.

  • I like shopping. I also hate paying shipping fees for stuff I can get around here. But I'm not really good at shopping at small businesses.

  • I live in a place where it is very, very easy to shop local, so we do a lot of it.  For example, there is a specialty foods store downtown where we get the same thing for DH's grandparents every year.  And my mom wants a gift certificate to a pilates studio downtown, so that's another easy local gift.

Last year, my sister made every gift she made, which was so nice.  She made a scarf for DH and a onesie for DD.  I hope she does it again!
  • I like both, online and going out to shop local.

We had a lot of craft fairs and such this year, so I got a lot of gifts from them for family and friends.

My online purchases are more for me or DD. I love using free shipping codes and BOGOs online so if I can get a good deal I will. :)
  • It depends on what we are shopping for.  Really I just like giving gifts and have a shopping issue near the holidays no matter what budget I give myself.   I do like making cookies and stuff like that for relatives though so that has helped out some.

  • I worked in retail for too long to enjoy shopping. I find joy in sitting my ass on the couch with a large glass of wine, listening to Christmas music, looking at my pretty tree, and getting 90 percent of my shopping done online :D

Me. Too. I hated it and I worked in a shoe store.
