Menstrual cramps late in pregnancy?

I had my 35 week OB appointment yesterday. I mentioned to my OB that I've been having menstrual type cramps. Especially at night when I'm sleeping (last night they were more painful). She said that labor will probably start soon. I was like "what?" They aren't like contractions I had with DD, just that feeling you get when you start your period.

I have my c-section scheduled for two weeks from today. If you had these same menstrual type cramps, did you go into labor pretty soon after you noticed them?

Re: Menstrual cramps late in pregnancy?

  • Uhhh, yes.  They were minor contractions.

  • I hate to tell you this but I went into labor the same day. I hope you can keep your babies cooking for two more weeks!

  • That's how labor started for me with DD#2 - it was only about 15hrs after those started that the "real" labor came on with her... With DD#1, I had to have my contractions induced because my water broke but I didn't go into active labor, and I was induced at 37w with the boys (no labor at all prior to induction with them).

  • With my singleton yes.  That's how I knew I was in labor.

  • Yep. I felt like crud all day. Cramps and I was mean and felt like I was getting AF. I showed up to the hospital at 5 cm and 2-3 minutes apart. Good luck!
  • They are really random and I feel them more at night. I know it sounds like such a stupid question but these feel different then what they felt like with DD. My mom flys in tonight so I would love to keep them in at least until Friday.

Totally not stupid!! My twins were my third pregnancy. Every labor and delivery was completely different for me. For me when you say that the cramping is more active at night, do you mean after a long day and it forces you to relax or after you go to bed? If it's after you go to bed, that's usually more labor pains. If it's after a long day, maybe more of the irritable uterus. Just take care of yourself. Second pregnancies and labors tend be speedier than first times. And if you're ever worried- go to labor and delivery.
With dd1, I never went into labor. With my singleton ds, I went into full labor, which woke me up and was obvious. Huge awful contractions. With the twins, my dr told me to come to hospital to be checked out and I was in labor. You just never know! I hope you make it longer too!!! Good luck!
  • If they're doing regular ultrasounds, you can also always ask them to see if they can check the cervical length during the scan to give you some peace of mind, too :)

I'm on MBR so I'm not on my feet that much. I feel them in like the middle of the night at like 1am.

I see my MFM tomorrow morning at 9:15 for a quick ultrasound and NST so we'll see what's going on tomorrow.

  • I had slight menstral cramps. Turned out I was in labor contracting every 1-1/2. I had already dialated to a 2. Luckily we caught in time that it was stopped.

    1-1/2 minutes sorry
  • Yeah, those are probably contractions.  I'd get them more frequently at night too.  You should call your doctor if you have 6 or more and hour.  They'll moniotr you at the hospital.  Have you had an NST yet?  They usually pick up on those things.  Mine would usually go away if I drank a bunch of water and laid on my left side for the most part.  If they didn't go away, I was supposed to go to L&D for monitoring.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • I went in Thursday for my BPP and NST. Both girls passed the BPP 8/8. Had a contraction while waiting to have my BP checked. Then NOTHING during my NST. After walking to my car, another contraction. So they are still pretty sporadic. During my ultrasound I asked about my cervix and he said he couldn't see it via ultrasound this time because both girls (breech) had their feet down there. And I'm not interested in having it checked vaginally.

36 weeks tomorrow so almost there.

  • I'm on HBR and had been cramping periodically for a while.. Ended up with contractions every 2 mins and hospital managed to significantly slow them down. I'm still having contractions and occasionally feel cramping. I was between 2/3cm 4 days ago so we're just working on holding them in. Hoping I can last another week!

  • I had contrax like you describe for a little over a week before my water broke.

I was losing bits of MP for the last 3-4 days. Looking back, it was obvious I was gong to have them soon but I explained every labor symptom away bc I was on denial. Haha.

And I was having twice weekly NSTs, having contrax while being monitored and no one seemed to think it was a big deal.

    Hope everything is going well!

  • Hey ladies. Still here. 36 weeks today. Still having random contractions (like maybe one an hour). Just resting (just woke up from a 2 hour nap) and waiting for more to happen. I see my OB Tuesday and MFM Wednesday. I've had no signs of my mucus plug (no blood at all) so we'll see when these girls make an appearance.

    Thanks for checking in!

  • @tootsscott and @stephanie2167 good luck I hope you both make it to your goal.

@stephanie2167 I know your c-section is scheduled for Dec 4th but my birthday is Dec 3rd maybe they will come on my birthday! ;)

This exactly for me too except I'm 34 weeks. OB comes in tomorrow and they'll be measuring babies on Thursday. @Stephanie2167, have you had any leakage? I've had some MP come out, but like you, no blood! You're so close! Good luck!
