Spelling ideas? Boy's name

We found out last week that we're officially having a boy (eep!), so our baby boy's name is going to be Leif Tyler. We're planning on pronouncing it "leaf," although my brother insists if we spell it "Leif," he'll pronounce it the traditional Norse way :-P. (Of course that's just him being a butthead, but anyway!) My SO is fine with spelling it Leaf, but I'm not sure I like that. So! Any suggestions or ideas would be helpful :-) (please no negativity... this is the name we both love and are naming our child, regardless of others' opinions. Thank you :-) ).

  • Loading the player...
  • One of the pronunciations of Leif is "leaf," so you're good to go. Kid will probably have to correct a lot of people but thems the breaks :)

  • Love the name! Stick with the traditional spelling.
  • My baby name book has three pronunciations for "Leif" --- LAYF, LEEF, and LIYF.

I think you're fine to spell it "Leif" and pronounce "Leaf."

If you spell it "leaf" people will totally think you reek of patchouli. Go with Leif...

This. And I absolutely adore the name, btw. :)

And @irisheyez7 total highfive for the patchouli reference. You and I should be friends.

ETA if you also know what a Trustafarian is, we just became best friends.

I like the traditional spelling the most otherwise people are just going to think your like a hippy that wants a nature name lol
Maybe I am a hippie that wants a nature name?  :-P  Lol.  I think it's funny how some nature names have been around long enough that people don't think anything of it (Willow, Aspen, Summer, Rain, etc.) and others are considered "hippie," because they're newer/not as widespread :-P.

Thanks for all the responses everyone!  I was leaning towards the traditional spelling anyway :-).

  • I mean if your about that do it up! You'll just have to answer a lot of questions which could be annoying in the long run. People are nosey haha
  • Leif for SURE!

Leaf is just a step away from naming your kid Twig or Branch.

I really do like the name. I would just side eye it if I saw it spelled "Leaf". I agree with MamaFantastic...it would be on par with "Twig", "Branch" or "Root" ;-)

  • Go with the traditional spelling or find a different name. If you change the spelling you lose all the meaning of the name, as PPs said.

  • I had a friend in high school named Leif, and I don't remember mispronunciation ever being an issue. Spell it however you like, but I vote for Leif!

  • Thank you ladies!  We love the name, people will just have to suck it up if they think it's a little out there :P.  My second choice was Adrian or Sorren, but we both really love Leif.  I'm grateful for all the input!

  • I like it! I don't think you will have issues with mispronunciation :)
