STMs and baby food

For those of you STMs or FTMs that plan on making your own baby food,I have a couple of questions.

1.What blender/mixer/processor did you or will you use?

2.What storage system did you or will you use for the food?

This could pertain to anyone regarding baby's first foods

1. How do you know what foods to start them on or how many ounces they should eat? Or is this something the pediatrician will inform me of?

I plan on waiting until 5 or 6 months before I introduce food but I am just curious. DS has oatmeal twice a day in his bottle [per drs orders for reflux] and I want to start making my own oatmeal grain for him to eat instead of the boxed so I know its all natural and oragnic.

TIA!

Re: STMs and baby food

  • 1) Cuisinart 4-cup mini food processor.  Works great!

    2) Before we've just refrigerated, but I'm thinking of upping my game this year and making in bulk to freeze for DS2.  I like the OXO Tot Baby Blocks.

    3) Our pedi and my local La Leche group recommended starting with Avocados and Bananas, not rice cereal or oatmeal.  We started right at 6 months with DD and 5 1/2 months with DS1.  I would recommend making your own oatmeal for him instead of the boxed kind for sure Yes, though I do like the Happy Baby oatmeal if you get store-bought.  It's all natural and organic.

  • 1) I'm going to roast and steam, then put them in a basic blender.

    2) Freeze them in cube trays then transfer them to freezer bags.  1 cube = 1oz.

There are different ways to approach solids.  It's really up to you.  The important thing is to try the same food for a few days in a row to watch for allergic reactions.  There are some foods you don't want to try until much later (especially if allergies run in your family) like berries (unless it's store bought baby food where they cook them at super high temps), honey, peanutbutter, nuts, etc.

With DS I started with rice cereal then did fruits, veggies, and then we did meats as finger foods.  He did great, but hated all the bitter veggies like green beans and peas.  He still doesn't like them.

With DD I plan to skip cereals in the beginning (personal preference, I don't see the need for empty calories right away...I might mix them up later with oatmeal).  I'm going to attempt to start with green veggies and work my way up to the sweeter veggies, and then do fruits.  We will likely do meats as a finger food once again.  I want her to love veggies, so my hope is by starting with the green veggies she will enjoy them more than her brother lol

DS was only on purees for a short time, so we'll see how it goes.  He pretty much jumped right to finger foods.

  • I got the Ninja blender so I could also use it to make smoothies for myself, etc. I plan to steam and roast myself. Also plan to start solids at 6 months.
  • I used the baby bullet for G. It came with a booklet about what foods to start with first and how to go about it. I also read that wholesome baby website too.
  • Ditto on everything the first poster said but I use sagespoonfuls.com it's amazing. Also I use ice cube trays pop them out when they are frozen and put them in a vacuum sealed airlock bag and label it. Easy easy. And the baby will let you know now much he wants to eat.

  • I just used my regular blender to make food for DS1.  I think it's Oster brand, and it worked fine.  I froze the food in ice cube trays, then popped them out into freezer bags for storage.  The cubes are about an ounce each, and that's what I started DS1 on.  Eventually, I gave him two cubes, then three.  I don't think he ever really got much more than 3 oz at a meal before he started real foods.  I loved the cubes because it was easy to combine a few different foods for new flavors.  I just popped a few frozen cubes into the fridge at night, and they were thawed by morning for his meals.

I introduced food to DS1 at 6 months, and plan to do the same for DS2.

If you're looking for organic baby cereal, have you tried Earth's Best brand?  That's what I used for DS1, and I was very happy with it.  He used to eat the oatmeal and the barley (we skipped rice cereal).  He ate it in the mornings with fruit, and I used it to thicken his food sometimes when I watered it down too much with milk.

  • Thanks for all of this good information ladies! I also checked out the wholesome baby website and it was very helpful!
