November 2013 Moms

Just had a major meltdown..

So my little girl got fluid in her lungs during delivery and she swallowed muconium. Well I thought most if not all of the fluid came out at the hospital. She had to be suctioned and beat on the back for a long time after delivery, and had one spell where she was choking on mucous the second day. Well just now on our second night home from the hospital out of no where she started choking again. I was hitting her on the back and it wasn't working. I was so scared and almost couldn't find the bulb syringe. Thankfully I did and that got the mucous out. She looked so scared and I was so worried I was going to watch her die. I haven't been able to stop crying since and I don't know how I will ever sleep. She slept in her crib great last night and now I'm too scared to leave her alone. Sorry I just need to vent, DH came in the room after it all happened and reassured me everything was fine, but wasn't in there to experience how scary it was, so he's not really phased by it.

  • Hugs mama! We were in the same boat. I wouldn't hesitate to contact the pedi to make sure they got it all out. Our DD got a lot in her too and when they used to tubes to get her cleaned out, it irritated her nose and it swelled shut so we were in oxygen and about ready to go to the NICU. Thankfully we got on steroids, but it is scary! I would take her in to be sure!

  • Im so sorry you had to experience that!! You did great in your quick response. I'm afraid I wouldn't know what to do. My baby also had to be suctioned at delivery because of muconium. but they did not tell us how to handle the bulb thing or anything related to mucous in her lungs. Scary. God help us all!
  • I'm so sorry that you and your LO had to experience. I don't blame you for being worried. Hugs.

Thanks for the reply! Sorry you also had to go through this!!
She has her first appointment early Tuesday morning so I'm trying to hold out til then, my mom is a mother/baby nurse at the hospital I delivered at and she actually helped LO through her 1st choking spell and is thankfully staying with me all day Monday, so I just have to get through tomorrow!
  • OMG. And I had a meltdown when she started coughing and sputtering while feeding her one night. I would feel the same way as you.
  • we are in the same boat too!  there is some comfort in numbers I guess.  Last night every time I laid her down she would wake up because she was soooo stuffy.  I ended up holding her all night so she could sleep.  DH suctioned her great this morning and is sleeping fine now of course.  Hopefully all is good tonight.

Hang in there momma!  There is light at the end of the tunnel, I promise.

  • Our LO has  had a few of these instances.  Has been checked by the pediatrician and all is okay, he just has MAJOR reflux and when he throws up it comes out his nose.  He is now on Zantac 2x a day.

Glad your LO is okay.  Hopefully it will get better soon!
  • That's so scary! I don't blame you for not wanting to leave her alone. I hope things get better for you!
  • Thanks ladies! Obviously I wouldn't wish this on anyone else but it helps knowing others are going through similar things and making it through and that I'm not totally crazy for wanting to stare at her all night haha. I did have her sleep in her bouncer next to the bed and it helped me a lot, I was able to get some sleep by being able to hear/see that she was ok without getting up to check. She also slept 4 1/2 hours straight! I woke her up to feed and change her she didn't even get up on her own. No more choking spells so far today. I hope those of you going through the same thing have LOs that are completely healthy very soon! Thanks again for the support!!
  • I'm sorry you had to go through that. It's terrifying to see something happening and not know what to do. But you did a great job!!!

  • I feel this way every time I feed Madeline. She gets really raspy and barky sounding, almost like croup or pneumonia. Its just a side effect from her birth defect and I am slowly learning what her normal is.
