Is anybody else thinking about cloth diapering? Please shares tips and stories if you have them. Also, if you know any websites that sell them at reasonable prices!
My only advice, make sure DH & you are ok with it. It was never for us, but even if I had wanted to I would not have since DH has a very weak stomach...the one day he actually threw up in the trash can while changing DD, yeah and that was with just a disposable. I wouldn't want to basically agree to do ALL diaper changes by going that route.
I did last time and plan on it again. My recommendation is to buy a few of several kinds up front and then you will find your favorites when you start using and can get more. My favs were fuzzi bunz and dreamboats but I think dreamboats are no longer in business
I used cloth/disposable hybrids with my 2 most recent babies and they were terrific! I'll probably use G-diapers again for this baby. They *never* leaked and diaper rash was an extremely rare phenomenon. Trouble is, they were a bit spendy. After a while, I switched in the cloth inserts instead of the 'sposie inserts and we saved a lot of cash that way.
If I had a more convenient set up for full cloth (laundry sink/better washer and dryer) I'd definitely go full cloth. I have *so many* friends who cloth diaper and everyone felt great about their choice. I love living in a day and age where there are so many options - and cloth diapering is so much more convenient than it was back when our parents were parents!
I really like Alvas. They're from China so they're cheap but the quality is good. They've held up much better than my Bum Genius and Tots Bots. www.alvababy.com

We cloth diaper at home and use sposies for daycare and travel. We use bumgenius 4.0 at night. But I prefer covers during the day. We use flips and wolbybug during the day with microfiber inserts. PP mentioned trying several different kinda at first. We didn't, but it is probably a good idea. You may want to look into a rental program that allows you to try several kinds for a month or to. This way you also know if you really want to cloth diaper before you spend a lot of money.

I'll be doing the cloth diaper route! I'll also be using BumGenius 4.0 too. I'm really excited about it and even though My husband has a weak stomach he likes the fact that we'll save money and the many other benefits. The patterns are also really fun!

I am glad you mentioned these. I see them online when I do searches and haven't heard anyone say a thing.

I want to CD this time! How do you clean them though? Do you launder them by themselves? Do you need to a water only cycle after them?
Everyone find the routine that works best for them and their washer. I have a front loader. I a cold rinse, hot wash, hot rinse. I also add a wet towel to the load to trick the washer into using more water. It has worked for us and I have never needed to strip my diapers.
Right now our diaper sprayer is a godsend with DS crazy pop diapers now that he eats 3 solid meals.

I second the alvas! They make up half my stash. The other half is Sunbabies (another cheap, but fine quality option). Sunbabies offered me some other cute prints when I felt like I bought all the alvas. I like the double gusset alvas with a hemp prefold and bamboo insert for overnight. I did the Jillian's Drawers diaper trial first and quickly found that pocket diapers were my preferred type. Washing is definitely a trial an error process. Right now I do a short cycle on hot no detergent, long cycle on hot with powder Tide, rinse cycle on cold, no detergent. I didn't start CDing till DS was almost 6 months, so I might have to do some new trial and error with #2.
I cd part time with my last one and loved it. DH was not in board so this time around we will be using disposables. I have a few left that I'm looking to pass off to someone else pretty in expensively. PM me if you're interested I have mainly BG 4.0, but also have a free time, fuzzibunz and kawaii all with all inserts!
We cd and love it. Just got a few bg's from the seconds sale on cotton babies. DD is potty trained and her diapers will be used for lo #2 no problem. Saving us a ton this time around. We went through some times where we used disposables at night, were having issues, but in 2.5 years I'd say we used less than 10 boxes of disposables.
ETA check out the CD board and the FAQ lots of great advice and most of the questions in this thread should be answered in the FAQ's
We are backwards - I suggested to use disposables, and the Hus actually suggested to use the cloth diapers. I'm just not sure whether I should make them or buy them, or use all in ones or the ones with the covers.
Depends on how often you want to wash. I'd say between 20-25 usually gets you 3-4 days. At least once they don't have to be changed every couple of hours.
I CD all the time, except when we go on a road trip, I put her in disposables while were in the car. We use bum genius 4.0 and fuzzibuns sized dipes. I love both! The wash routine has changed a lot throughout the last year and a half tho. Its changed mainly because I think as she's gotten older her poo has gotten harder to get out of the diapers... and using more and more soap isn't a good thing, as then it creates build up and then you get leaks.
Cloth diapering a newborn is about as easy as it gets! if the baby is ebf you in fact don't even have to rinse the dipes, jist throw them straight in the washer. It sounds gross, but its not really.
I didn't start cding til aboit 3 weeks old becuz at the time I didn't have any newborn size cloth... and the bg's and most one size diapers won't fit til around 10 lbs. And I started out with 15. I was doing a load every night... I collected a few more and had 22 and then could do every 2-3 days. Now I have a lot more because my friend gave me all her fuzzibuns, I think I have around 34 total that fit her now, howdver I still do the wash every 3 days to avoid stink issues
I have used them for both my kids and will use them for this baby as well. We are going to start with prefolds and cover and then once baby fits one size diapers we will use pocket diapers and fitteds.
Rachel, mama to Ava (6), Olivia (4), Nora (2), and baby#4 on the way.
We used cloth with both of my kids for the first year and will probably do the same with this one. I really like my Alvas that I bought through FB co-ops and will probably be getting a few more to replenish my stash.
We cloth diaper DS and we will again. It took a lot to talk DH into it, but eventually he got on board. I got a lot of grief from people, but we're 14 months in and still cloth diapering, so that shut them up. We even got daycare to use them even though we are the first family to ask. It has not been a problem at all. We used prefolds and covers in the beginning and I will tell you we had problems with yeast rash because they don't wick away moisture. I made sure to change his diaper very often and it didn't help. We switched to Bumgenious 4.0 when he started peeing more and that stopped that. My advice is definitely attach some kind of sprayer to your toilet when you start to deal with solid foods poop. It made the job easier.
We love love love cloth! We have several different brands but we love subbabydiapers.com the most
We used a ton of sunbaby diapers too. They are cheap and wear well for a china cheapie diaper. I am part of a local facebook co-op group and they run Sunbaby co-ops all the time. So excited to get to buy some from the next one!

I used econo bums. They are gusseted with little snaps so you can have them through out. IDK how they'd fit a NB, I started when ds was a little older. Then there are "snapis", I think they were called, to replace diaper pins. I have the nice prefold they came with and then 1,000 gerber ones. I decided to try CDing only if I could fit it in the budget, and needed to see if I liked it. An experienced friend recommended doing it old school like that, and I really liked it. The only thing that I wanted was some sort of high powered squirting device to get all the mess off into the toilet easier. They make mini shower heads the attach to the toilet tank that looked really functional.
I used disposable intermittently. LIke if we were out a long time, or at night I used them a bit. Otherwise there is a lot of diaper changing, like every hour on my son at 4/5 mo (IDk if that's normal). I needed some sleep. Oh also it worked for DH, who didn't want to CD, so we each got what we wanted to deal with.
We used cloth with my DS. I like prefolds for babies and all in ones for toddlers. We had very few rashes because I immediately knew when he was wet. I changed his diaper a lot more frequently than I would have with disposables, but I felt like it was more sanitary for that reason. I am not sure that it really saves money until you are able to reuse with a second child, so in my opinion it is more of a parenting style choice than anything else.
dlsexton what's up with the different "series" diapers on alva baby's site? Am I just totally stupid and not getting something or is there something to it? I thought I knew pretty much about cloth diapers, but I'm so confused right now!
We CDed with DD since she was about 5 days old. The newborn stage was awesome. It's definitely a lot more work after she turned 6 months and started eating solids, but we're still with it. I can't wait to dig out the newborn dipes and look at how tiny they are!
We bought almost every single diaper we have from bumgenius seconds sales, and I couldn't be happier with the quality. We use mostly their old All In One system (3.0s), so they're sized diapers and we have about 20 in each size (XS-L). We have a bunch of 4.0s and Freetimes that we use at nighttime, too.
DH was super on board when I showed him this AIOs. They're as easy to use as disposable diapers. He's not as crazy about the pockets, so he won't grab those during the day if he can help it. Having him on board was crucial, though, since he's a SAHD. The best thing I ever did was order one for him to look at. He was very skeptical before, but as soon as he saw it and got to play with it a little bit, he changed his tune.
I love cloth! They are so cute and save a ton of money. $500 looks like alot up front vs a $20 box of sposies but once you spend the $500, you're set! You save thousands. I use BG Freetimes. I'm lazy so I like AIOs. I wash every other day and 24 was the perfect amount to have enough while the washed load was hang-drying. I CD'd DS starting around 4 months. I can't wait to CD from the start this time. I've been slowly building my newborn stash over the last year. All I need is a few more covers that I'll get from abbyslane.com on Black Friday and I'm set!

What's a sprayer for your toilet?
We bought a sink sprayer, like the one that's on your kitchen sink, and attached it to the back of the toilet. I hose down all poop diapers and keep them in a Planetwise wet bag until we wash them. It helps to get all the poop off and it keeps them from staining.
I'm leaning towards cd. My friend bought hers from china and had to use disposables until her newborn was big enough for the cd. Did other people experience this?

That part is a little confusing. There are slight differences in the series. If you click on a diaper it will tell you about what it is. Mainly I just go through and look for the cute patterns I want @mrscurlygurl can you explain the differences in the series any better?
The Bum Genius diaper sprayer is awesome. Very good pressure and easy to install. I installed it myself in about 15 minutes. From what I've read, others have not had as good as luck with some of the less expensive sprayers.
I highly recommend snaps over Velcro (Aplix). My stash except for Alvas are pretty much all Velcro because I thought that would make it easier for DH. The Velcro does not hold up as well, but the main reason I wish I would've gone with all snaps is because she can easily undo the Velcro and takes them off all the time!
The start up cost can be daunting but much less so if you use a brand like Alvas. Also even if you get the more expensive CDs you WILL save money in the long run. Money saving is the only reason I switched to CD.

Also if you have the older top loaders and are thinking of getting a new HE washer I would wait until after you finish CDing. My HE frontloaders sucks major monkey balls at getting my CDs clean because of the small amount of water it puts out. Some people do not have problems, but it has been a huge issue for us.

@flyerschick436, I don't really know that there is all that much difference in the series numbers/letters. From what I can tell, there are three basic types. The double gusset (which has two rows of snaps at the top), the other one (I forget the name) that has one row of snaps, and then some bamboo shells and inserts.
I've heard the same thing about the Velcro vs snaps...that the Velcro doesn't hold up as well.
I am so excited to cloth diaper!! I have been building a newborn stash for quite a while now and it mostly consists of GMD workhorses (fitted diaper- good for newborn messy poops). They are cheap yet efficient (so I hear from the ladies on the Cloth Diapering forum). I'll be using Assunta Tiny Covers ($4.99 each) as well as have a couple Kawaii P & N pockets, and THX newborn all in one diapers. My newborn stash is mostly complete - I can't wait to start buying more One Size
We do cloth diapers! My DS (2 years old) is still in them, though he is starting to potty train now and we change a lot fewer of them these days. We use pre-folds from a service with our own covers. My favorite covers are Flips. Nicki's Diapers (from my hometown) also has their own line that are pretty great and reasonably priced.
We use CDs with DS and love them. DH was not sure about them, but he really likes them now. (I pretty much handle all the poopy diapers, though. And I do all the laundry.) If you're thinking about trying CDs and questions, the Bump CD board is great. There are lots of FAQs pinned to the first page. There's also a great YouTube series by Obbs and Lala (sp?) and another one called Cloth Diapering 101.
@LuluPMW - Yes, one-size (OS) diapers are often marketed like they will fit a newborn, but usually NB legs are too skinny to fill them out right. You can buy a NB stash for fairly cheap if you want to skip disposables altogether. We used disposables with DS until he grew into our OS stash, but this time around we will have a NB stash.
