First rule of real estate - location, location, location. ;) The cost of living is higher in places where 500k houses are popular, so they are most likely making two or more times than someone doing the same job in a low COL area.
Ugh, so much this.  H thinks it's insane that I would rather spend $200,000 on a 1/4 of an acre at the lake when we could spend $90,000 and get 30 acres in his hometown.

Dude.  Location.  A peninsula on the lake in the best school district or the middle of nowhere in a shady ass town where public school is just soooo not an option?

  • You know, DH and I were just talking about this. We renovated our kitchen a couple of years ago and we're actually considering taking the appliances with us if and when we move. We really like our appliances, and quite frankly, the next place we move to may not have updated appliances and I don't feel like buying appliances again.
  • I like having a master bath and another bathroom. @emejay How exciting! Is this your first house?
    No, our second one :)

Here you have 3 type of houses mainly: Bungalow (Single story), Cottage (2 story) and Split-Level which is somewhere in between. All houses are built with a basement but not all are finished. And central heat is not even an option!
  • Oh and 200k will buy you a condo in the suburbs .. The cost of living is crazy high.

  • I rarely use our heater. My air conditioner is still running.

My A/C is still running, too, but it's in the 80's outside.

This weekend the lows will be in the upper 60's.  If the house goes below 72, the heater kicks on.  I definitely need it for those cold nights!!

LOL at upper 60s being a cold night.

You should see how we act when the lows get in the 40's ..... Were hibernating.

Oh, I know. I was in Baton Rouge one February and it was going to freeze overnight. You would think the world was ending the way the news was going on and on. Schools were cancelling.

  • Here's one:  I don't know anyone down here that has a basement.  I saw one in Key West at Hemmingway's home (a wine cellar) but they're very rare because we're at sea level.

Another not-so-common item?  Fireplaces.  We have a fireplace, but we have used it twice in the three years we've lived here.  Most annoyingly, birds nest in it during the spring/summer.  I think there's one living in there still that never moved out of the nest.  It hangs out on our patio in the morning sometimes.
I'm really excited that the house we're putting an offer on has a fireplace! It reminds me so much of my childhood home.

     Real Fireplace > Gaz Fireplace

Other crazy thing: Even though we have like 15 minutes of summer per year, EVERYBODY has a pool. This is crazy.

  • @emajay
I love fireplaces, we have a real wood fireplace but we put gas logs in it because my son can't handle the real wood burning, he has horrible allergies. I also love not having to clean up after that.

@slappalicious we put screens in our chimneys at the top to keep the chimney sweep from getting in and building nest.

    Fucking bump!!!!

There are birds called chimney sweeps?  I thought they were people that cleaned out your chimneys.  (shows how much I know)

I'm learning too. I thought these were chimney sweeps:

Well damn, I just googled it. There really called chimney swifts but I've only heard them called chimney sweeps. Just another thing I'm learning that I've been told the wrong thing my whole life.

  • Being a military wife and having to move all the time makes leaving the appliances behind so much easier. But it does suck when you get stuck with crappy ones. Our dish washer's broken twice in the house we're at now.

I'll be darned.  That's exactly what's up in thar.

They make these things you can buy at the hardware store that you can light in your fireplace to run them out. Then you can get one of those wire mesh things to get put at the opening so they won't come back in. Before we did that we would have baby birds fall out of their nest all the time into our house. It was bad!!!

ETA: I think you have to do it in the winter, smoke them out, when they don't have babies.

  • When we bought the house we're in now, we negotiated to have the previous owners leave all kinds of stuff. We got all of the appliances (including W/D & microwave), the mantle, all of the curtains and curtain rods, a stand-alone bar, the matching bar stools, a pool table, and all the pool cues and all the other stuff that goes with it. That's more than normal, but no need batted an eye at our request. It's all about what you negotiate. Personally I think asking for curtains and rods/blinds/etc. is really smart because they're so expensive and they also don't always fit at a new house anyways.

    I'm also on team must-have-a-master-bathroom.

We keep this flapper thing in our chimney closed all year.  It sounds like the nest is on it.  I'll have to open it when the bird is on the patio.  I don't want a bird stuck inside my house!

I think we need to find someone to clean out our chimney.  We've never had it done...

That thing they make to light in your fireplace also cleans all the gunk off the sides, therefor you don't need to hire someone to come clean it. It worked good for ours. All kinds of shit fell down.

Huh, I had read that it wasn't too good to use those CSLs.  We'll have to give it a try if it gets cold enough.

I don't know if it's good to use lol. We just used it when we had a wood burning fire place. Now I have gas logs I don't need them anymore.

Other than the appliances - The numbers of bathrooms in a house. Like 3 bedrooms 3 bathrooms. What?

Or houses with more bathrooms than rooms? Again, what?

The house I grew up in has 3 kitchens. People are always shocked to hear this, rightfully so. My grandfather built the house for my parents and I guess the guy loved extra kitchens.

Eta my parents still live there and the extra ovens really come in handy for hosting. That's why my folks are on the hook for every holiday!

    That's definitely a first!!

My father's parents had 2 living room in their house: one where people could go and another one that was to be probably to be used only and only if the Queen of England would come for tea.

My father was never allowed in all the years he lived there to set foot in that room.

    @EmeJay, you'll love this:
My grandparents' house has a living room, den, and a parlor.  The parlor is super fancy and only used for my grandmother's church circle meetings, the occasional piano lesson, or to have tea with her on your birthday.  It is completely decorated in pink and white and at Christmas there is a giant white tree.

  • We bought our house brand new and it came with all appliances except a fridge which we bought with some of the allowance money the builder offered us. I would always expect appliances when renting, but not necessarily buying, although it was nice to only have to worry about one thing.

    I adore this!

And I was not refering to a Family room vs a Living room. There were really 2 full living room but one that was never used by anyone. Creepy.
  • The house I grew up in had a living room (that was never used only for company) and a den (where our tv was). Most of my friends had houses like this too. Plus a formal dining room and a breakfast room. So much wasted space!!!

  • @BlackBooks I think we're from the same neck of the woods.

I guess it's because I'm used to classifying buildings based on architectural style, but a bungalow to me references Craftsman style homes from the 20s-40s, and I've never heard that foundation type has anything to do with it.  A ranch, to me, is a 'rambler' that's one-story w/basement or split level.

Also, I hate Love It or List It.

The tree looks awesome, but I would be careful in the future.  Unhooking your hoses is one of the first things you should do before it freezes, since water in the pipe can freeze all the way into the house, which can crack the faucet and burst the pipes.

Oh trust me our freezes only last for a few hours normally, no risk of it going to the house.

This particular weekend though it did stay at freezing temperature for longer than 12 hours so I just kept the hose running until the temp rose above freezing.

I've actually always been told to let the water run when we have a freeze. I've never had it happened to a house I lived in because we never had exposed pipes they were all in slabs or enclosed. I do remember once waking up at my grandmothers when I was like 5 and we didn't have water because she forgot to run the water all night. She lived in a raised house.

    Fucking bump!!!!
