Humidifiers and Space heaters...

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a humidifier for the nursery?  Also I'm not sure if we're supposed to be getting a warm mist or a cool mist model?  Does it matter?

Also, I was thinking we should get a space heater for the nursery because our house is big and cold, but Dh said that he's heard recently that there is a link between keeping the baby's room warm and SIDS. What do you think?  Is a space heater a good idea if your house is a bit drafty, or is it too much of a risk?

Thanks for the advice ladies!!

Re: Humidifiers and Space heaters...

  • I wouldn't use a space heater in the baby's room. ?On top of everything else, it's a fire hazard. ?We use a space heater for bath time, but of course we're always in the room.

  • The nurse at our baby care class said to use cool mist humidifiers - not warm mist - because warm breeds bacteria waaay quick.

She also said to keep baby's room cool for sleeping - they sleep better and have less chance of SIDS.  So I wouldn't worry about the space heater either - and as Miss B said, they're a fire hazard.

  • Ok, so its always about 64-68 degrees in our house.  Is that going to be warm enough for the baby?   My parents seem to think we're going to freeze him to death =(
  • well, you should probably keep it a little warmer than that this winter.   68 would be OK, but I think 64 is too low.

I would not use a space heater.  Too scary to me.

You'll probably have him sleeping in your room at first anyway right?   Can you just close up vents in other places and open up yours and close the door so it stays a little warmer in there?

also, dress the baby in at least one layer more than you wear to bed.  You'll probably be swaddling too, so they stay pretty warm.  Ben is a little heat pump.  He is hot all the time.  As a newborn though they have trouble regulating their temp sometimes.   I'd do a onesie, feet pjs and a swaddle blanket.  We kept Ben in a hat too, but i've read you're not supposed to do that b/c they regulate their heat better without it.  But our nurse told us to do it at first.

I've also heard not to do the warm vaporizer thing.  We have a cool mist one but honestly I dont' think it does anything.  We never use it.  I've tried when he had a cold, but it didn't seem to help.   I would probably just not buy one unless you really need it.

  • We turn the heat down to 66 on "warmer" winter nights and either 67-68 on cold winter nights.  I have Payton sleeping in fleece footed jammies, a pair of thin cotton pants and socks under the jammies and she stays perfect.  Without the layers, she wakes up cold.  She is getting better with staying under her blankets now though, finally.

If you feel that the layering isn't good enough, you can always use the space heater in the room before you put the your baby in there and turn it off for bedtime.  We have done that a few times and it worked well.

My mom used warm humidifiers for my sister and I when we were little and got us one when P got her first cold - and it worked great - but after leaving the water in it for more than 24hrs, you could see the mold growing in it.  Gross.  Needless to say, we didn't use it after that.

  • Baby  Bargains talks about the different types... I feel like they said "ionizing" ones were good?  SOmething like that.  You dont' want something that just pumps mold and bacteria into the air.

I like the idea of putting a space heater on for a while before going in.  You could extend that idea by turning it on when you go in to nurse in the middle of the night and turning it off when you leave too.
