Magna Tiles Question

This is one of those things I never would have known about if not for TB! 

I am thinking of getting them for Christmas from Amazon. Any reason to go for solid vs. clear colors? Clear look prettier. There are also "Metro Mags" that look like the same thing but a little cheaper. Anyone know anything about those?

Anyone remember if there were any online Black Friday deals on these last year, or are they always the same price?

    I'm all for saving money on "generics" in all areas, but for the magnet toys, I would definitely recommend going with the big brands. We have Magformers and LOVE them. One of our local libraries has the Magna Tiles and they are just as fun. They have the clear ones and they are on a lighted table, which makes them look even cooler.

    I'm getting DS magformers for Christmas. I've read great reviews on them so I think they're comparable to magna tiles. 
    I just found a starter set at Winners (the Canadian name for TJ Maxx) for a bit of a discount so it may be worth a shot. I grabbed the small set for a gift for DS's friends bday.

    Clear, because my kids love to put things inside, DS in particular will build garages & mazes for his hot wheels cars and DD will make 'castles' and houses and put some of her small dolls & figures in them. Not that you can't do that w/ solid but the clear makes it easy to see where things are and whatnot.

    DS got Magformers for his birthday and they are great!  The whole family plays with them.
    DD~6 years old~born June 6, 2008 (1st grade)
    DS~4 years old~born November 6, 2010 (1st year of preschool)

    We did clear. I looked for sales, didn't find them. Prices tend to rise closer to the holiday.
