Who's awful at giving gifts???

I am. My whole family is so I come by it naturally. It's just not a big deal to give or receive gifts. I got gift cards for my bday and I feel guilty thinking about using it for selfish "me" things and not groceries or Christmas gifts for family or stuff for ds. My dh loves gifts so I try but we struggle to pay our bills right now until he is done with school so any gift giving is a huge sacrifice. My brother is awful with his wife too and she has gotten use to it over te years. I tell her we come by it genetically and we don't mean to be bad at it!

Maybe this is flame worthy but I will probably just bake something for our sitters...if I can't get my family nice gifts for Christmas due to tight finances then I can't justify giving them extra money or gift cards.

I feel this is unpopular around here. Any ladies like this?

  • I think baking something and a nice note for the sitters is fine if that's what you can afford. I would get gifts for my family before the sitters if I had to choose. And I love to get a heartfelt thank you note. :)

  • Shit. I am awful, and if have not even started. We have a ton of people to buy for. I didn't even consider DS's daycare teachers. Ugh.

  • Thanks for the responses. I started feeling really bad about my gift to the sitters after reading others. Being poor and a terrible gift giver isn't a good combination!

  • I hate how the holidays have become all about spending x amount of money on people. Gifts should be thoughtful, to show people you love an appreciate them. And the holiday season should just be about spending time with loved ones. It's awful that those of us who are struggling financially should feel guilt and shame for not meeting peoples "standards".

  • @AmySmolos, I am semi-poor, extremely cheap, and a terrible gift giver. Ha! I get so irritated when I'm supposed to bring a $10 white elephant gift to a party, considering my entire Christmas budget for my kids, nieces, nephew, DH, etc. is like $100.
